Reincarnation River oversees the shifting fates.
This is a saying that has been passed down for a long time in the Trial Field, referring to the cyclical nature of fortunes. It concerns the three rankings of Heaven, Earth, and Man. Only cultivators within the Trial Field can appear on these rankings, and should they leave, even briefly, their names would disappear upon return.
Thus, some top powerhouses would fight their way back upon reentering the Trial Field, reclaiming their rightful positions.
Fortunes wax and wane.
Over time, the phrase "Reincarnation River oversees the shifting fates" gradually spread.
Liu Yunfeng was such a cultivator who'd been up and down on the Heavenly Ranking numerous times. He had claimed every spot from fifth to tenth. In everyone's eyes, he was a young Heavenly Genius with extraordinary talent, and his background in the sect made countless people envious.
Haoyue Sect!
The Haoyue Sect from the vast Tian Gang region!
He was the top young Heavenly Genius of the Haoyue Sect! Radiating brilliance! Truly the darling of Heaven and Earth!
But he never saw himself that way.
He hailed from the vast Tian Gang region, from the Haoyue Sect. Coming with no prestigious family background, he never thought himself to be naturally gifted as a Heavenly Genius. As for the term "radiating brilliance," if he heard someone describe him that way, Liu Yunfeng would only respond with a cold sneer, silently cursing in his heart: "Radiating your sister!"
The position he held today was all because of a life-threatening crisis when he was eight years old.
That was decades ago...
One sunny and breezy afternoon, next to the trash heap of the Haoyue Sect, gathered dozens of children of various ages. The oldest were teenagers, and the youngest were six or seven years old. Eight-year-old Liu Yunfeng was inconspicuous among them, and so he occupied the worst position.
Indeed, they were orphans, children with no home to return to. They struggled with hunger every day. Unlike children from wealthy families, these orphans worried not about how to play happily but how to satisfy their hunger and stay alive.
The competition among the orphans was fierce. The older children were domineering, always occupying the best spots. If they caught other kids with good finds, they would rob them. Resistance meant a beating, and persistence could lead to death!
Here, there were no laws, and no one cared whether these orphans lived or died.
Liu Yunfeng's origins were pitiful; he didn't even know who his parents were, whether they had abandoned him or died in an accident. An old man took him in, but passed away when he was only four years old, leaving behind nothing of value.
So from that time, Liu Yunfeng began his life scavenging in the trash heap. He knew those bigger kids; they weren't friends, but there was no enmity either. Every time he rummaged through the trash, he was extremely careful. He never provoked those people and knew what he could take and what he couldn't. Thus four years passed without any trouble.
This dump was where the Haoyue Sect, one of the premier sects in the Tian Gang region, disposed of its refuse. There was domestic trash, alchemy waste, and artifact forging debris. Domestic trash was these children's favorite, as it contained a lot of untouched food. Coming from a supreme sect, their ingredients were of the highest quality, not suitable for non-spiritual beings.
Thus, the children who scavenged here were mostly strong, but that was it. The real treasures, even if destined for the sect's dogs or other beasts, were never thrown here.
The alchemy waste was the least desirable; everyone avoided it. The dregs of elixirs were discarded only after all recovery attempts failed. There was nothing of value left, but there was no shortage of deadly toxins.
Liu Yunfeng had seen a Foundation Establishment teenager, who had been the king of the local kids and quite a tyrant, look for useful elixirs in the waste. The result was a venomous death – so fierce and silent for someone whose punch could shatter a boulder. No one even dared to touch him after his death.
That incident turned the alchemy waste into a forbidden zone for the orphans; no one dared to go there anymore.
In comparison, the artifact forging waste was more popular. It was possible to find some valuable metals, which could be sold in town for a good price. Sometimes, if lucky, they could come across discarded ore that could be refined into divine metals – a real jackpot.
Yet, such finds were always the preserve of the older kids. Liu Yunfeng yearned to have his share, but never dared. Those kids protected the waste like wolves. Anyone who tried to take a share would be beaten into disability.
Here, being disabled was almost equivalent to being dead.
This place was far from the Haoyue Sect. Whenever the sect came to dump waste, it would be through a massive warship flying overhead, its cargo hatch opening to release a downpour of refuse.
Those moments were the happiest for these children.
But all these memories stopped abruptly for Liu Yunfeng at the age of eight, on that sunny and pleasant afternoon.
A group of children sat waiting from afar, having calculated the Haoyue Sect's schedule to be there in time.
That day, Liu Yunfeng had a dagger the length of a palm on his body.
He had found it by accident in the food waste, cutting his finger and bleeding profusely, which frightened him terribly.
At that moment, no one noticed him, so he hid the small dagger away.
Who would have thought that for some reason, the dagger unexpectedly established a sort of heart-to-heart connection with him—Liu Yunfeng even had the sensation that he could make the dagger fly on its own! He even secretly tried it once. It did indeed fly. However, that experiment resulted in him falling into a deep slumber for seven or eight days, nearly starving to death in his sleep.
But after that incident, he always kept the dagger close to him. Never leaving his side. It was only many years later that he came to know that his dagger was an imperial dharma instrument. As for why it ended up mixed in the food and discarded, it was said that the careless Junior Master was using the knife to cut meat and forgot about it after finishing. As a result, the negligent servants swept it into the trash heap. And then... it was thrown away!
It is said that when the Junior Master remembered the loss of the dagger, over half a month had passed, and he did not even mention it. For a supreme being, losing an imperial dharma instrument might cause a bit of distress, but only just a bit. Later, because of this incident, he took special care of Liu Yunfeng.
The view returns to that sunny and breezy afternoon, Liu Yunfeng, as usual, was preparing to wait for the Haoyue Sect's waste transport ship to arrive.
In the afternoon, the ship arrived slightly later than usual, but no one paid much attention to it, as such occurrences were quite normal. Whether a bit earlier or later, they would definitely come according to the scheduled days.
Whoosh!
Countless household wastes were pouring down from the sky, as if a deluge of trash.
Then, on the ground, a small mountain appeared!
All kinds of waste!
A group of children of all sizes became excited. The trash this time seemed better than before! One could even smell the fragrance coming from within!
"It must be that Haoyue Sect has held another large banquet!" a larger child exclaimed excitedly.
"Awesome, I really wish they had banquets every day." Another big kid rushed forward, grabbed a spiritual chicken's leg, and stuffed it into his mouth desperately.
The group of children did not notice that after dumping the trash, the warship did not immediately leave. Instead, it hovered in the sky, seemingly doing something.
At this moment, on the warship, there was a group of teenagers around eighteen or nineteen years old. Although they all looked somewhat immature, the boys handsome, the girls beautiful, all of them exuded an air of nobility.
Leading them was a man in his fifties. He had an aura that commanded respect even without anger and was looking sternly at the group of young men and women as he lectured: "Do you see? Those children down there?"
The group of young men and women moved to the ship's window to look down. At first glance, they all couldn't help but frown, especially when they saw that the teenager about their age was desperately stuffing a spiritual chicken's leg into his mouth.
Gag...
A beautiful long-haired girl, doll-like, immediately covered her mouth, her face in disbelief, turning a bit pale from disgust: "What are they doing?"
The others also looked disgusted, frowning and their eyes filled with revulsion. In their eyes, the group of children eating from the trash below was simply nauseating! Could there be anything more vomit-inducing in the world? How could there be such people?
A very handsome young man looked puzzledly at the old man: "Why don't they eat properly? Why are they eating trash here? Are they sick in the head?"
The old man's expression darkened: "Do you think they are like you? Born noble, having all the fine food and clothes without lifting a finger?" Saying that, he glanced at the doll-like girl: "Today, I will take this opportunity to teach you a good lesson, so you understand the various hardships in the world. If you do not strive in your cultivation, your fate may not be much better than these children's..."
Meanwhile, down at the pile of trash.
Liu Yunfeng felt his heart brimming with happiness—what an exhilarating feeling! He had no idea what kind of banquet Haoyue Sect had held, that they would leave behind so many good things!
So many exquisite dishes, all complete, not a single bite taken from them!
This was truly a treasure trove!
Even those snooty rich people in town probably hadn't tasted these heavenly delicacies, right?
Thinking of this, Liu Yunfeng's eyes fixated on a pile of white stuff.
Buns!
Meat buns!
They were actually meat buns!
The eight-year-old Liu Yunfeng was so excited that he was nearly faint. But years of scavenging in the rubbish heap had made him develop a calm disposition. Getting too excited could attract the attention of others. That would not be good.
Meat buns, these were meat buns! This was the most sought-after food here!
Because generally speaking, they were complete!
Few people would throw away half-eaten meat buns.
More importantly, it's the meat inside!
