Heaven Slaying Blade

Chapter 556: Mind Gap

Three days later, a group of young men from the ancient town unwillingly trailed behind a crowd of people. Many of them had bewildered expressions on their faces. With Li Zhu's death, the seal on their souls was not as tight as before, creating a small opening.

Therefore, even without Chu Mo taking them around to experience various things, these passionate youths began to doubt what they had believed before.

There was a young girl named He, who Chu Mo had captured to serve Shen Aobing previously. She was currently standing next to Chu Mo, her spirited eyes looking around, her countenance reflecting a struggle to speak.

"What's the matter? Do you have something to say?" Chu Mo asked.

"No...Nothing." He's mood seemed a bit low, and she said softly, "It's just... some memories resurfaced all of a sudden."

"Oh?" Chu Mo gave her a glance.

He's eyes were beginning to get teary and she whispered, "I remembered how I ended up in the ancient town."

Upon hearing this, the other youths turned to look at her. Not everyone could recall the memories that were sealed. Even though Li Zhu was dead, the seal on their souls still existed, and the size of the opening in each person's seal varied.

They might doubt Chu Mo's words, but they would find it easier to accept the words of their companions.

"I was born into a noble family. I was the youngest legitimate daughter, and my parents, along with the rest of my family, treated me very well." He seemed to be recalling something and murmured, "That's why that day, when you told me to serve Senior Shen, I was extremely unwilling deep down in my heart..."

Chu Mo remained silent. These fifty-plus gifted young men were all handpicked by Li Zhu from the entire White Tiger Continent. As to the process of selection, suffice to say, it must not have been pleasant.

"When I was very young, I showed some talent in cultivation, but my parents didn't want me to join a sect. They wished to keep me as their joyous bundle within their vision for as long as they could." As He spoke, tears started streaming down her face.

Miao Yi Niang went over to He and gently held her hand, saying, "Little sister, the past is in the past. If you don't like the life you're living now, we could actually send you home."

Chu Mo looked at Miao Yi Niang but didn't say anything. Evidently, He, who managed to break through the soul seal so quickly without Chu Mo's help and recall so many things, was incredibly talented.

Of course, if he could, Chu Mo wouldn't let go of a great material like this.

But everyone has their dreams and their own loved ones. They should have the right to choose their own life. Otherwise, how different would he be from Li Zhu, fundamentally speaking? Therefore, Chu Mo didn't object to Miao Yi Niang's promise.

If He was indeed unwilling to leave her home to go to the Azure Dragon Continent with him, Chu Mo would respect her choice.

"I... I no longer have a home!" Tears streamed down He's face as she chokedly said, "The master... No, the demon Li Zhu, his subordinates brought a talent-testing object and discovered me. They wanted to forcefully take me with them. My family put up a resistance and then..."

When He reached this point, she was too grief-stricken to continue speaking, overcome by sorrow.

Miao Yi Niang held He in her arms, gently patting her back, "Crying will only make you feel better. It's okay."

The outcome was clear without needing to hear it. Even if He's family was nobility, or even part of the royalty, they were just ordinary people in the secular world. They had no chance of resistance against a group of innate-realm experts. By this time, their bodies may have already decayed.

The faces of the other youths turned pale after listening to He's words. Some of them suddenly shouted, began rolling on the ground clutching their heads, and crying out in pain.

Miao Yi Niang and the others looked on with expressions of pity, but there wasn't anything they could do. There were some things that they had to get through by themselves.

Chu Mo could indeed break their soul seals through spells, but that would require these youths to open their minds completely. How many of them could open their mind to another stranger after what they had been through with Li Zhu? What if Chu Mo was another Li Zhu?

And there was another important problem. If Chu Mo were to break the seals on their souls through spells, essentially, that would be another form of soul control!

The only difference would be letting these youths forget about Li Zhu completely, but Chu Mo's mark would be imprinted deep within their souls.

Chu Mo didn't want to do that. He hoped they could each be themselves.

While many people might see freedom as unworthy of mentioning, in Chu Mo's perspective, it was still significantly important.

If one couldn't even control their own thoughts, what difference would there be between them and a puppet?

Soon, the young men crying out in pain on the ground all stopped moaning, but they just sat there, staring blankly. Tears trickled down many of their faces.

Clearly, they had all remembered everything!

The methods Li Zhu used were not new or original. He simply sealed a portion of the youths' memories and imprinted himself into the depths of their souls. This made the innocent and passionate youths mistakenly believe that he was the best person in the world, and was naturally destined to be their master!

In the secular world, some people are good at brainwashing others. They continuously instill a belief into others, making them completely believe in it in the end. It is also a form of mind control, just a very low-level one.

Li Zhu's method was not brainwashing, but directly "washing" their souls!

As such, those who had had their souls "washed" would never betray him.

Unless, one day, he died. Only then would these people slowly start to forget him bit by bit. But if there weren't any external factors, even if he died, some people would never betray him in their lifetime!

Chu Mo's arrival signified such an external factor. Taking them to see the places Li Zhu and those from Beyond Heaven wreaked havoc, and the evil deeds they had done, composed the external stimuli.

Li Zhu's death caused their soul seals to crack, and these external stimuli widened the cracks even more!

It seemed that Chu Mo's intended goal had been achieved.

The expressions on more than half of the fifty-odd youths' faces were full of pain and struggle. It was obvious that the cracks were indeed getting bigger.

However, a few stubborn individuals glared at Chu Mo with intense hatred. The most notable one of them was even flushed with anger as he shouted, "Sorcery! You want to use this sorcery to make us betray our master. Dream on! We will never betray our master!"
