124 - Daggat: Pitcher of Possibilities


"Alright, let's get the leveling out of the way," grumbled Daggat. HE didn't level up more than once. It wasn't fair.

The crew was gathered around a small fire tended by Hunter, who loomed over them all. The altar of Saharzuel rested nearby. Daggat's stump still throbbed, but he did his best to ignore it. Things were quieting down in Harrowpine. It had been three days since the battle. So far, they had put off their habitual group biotrait and skill point spending in favor of rest, revelry, and to help sort out the rest of the village. One day was spent entirely on delving into Elyndris's fading memories and writing them down. But, there was little more they could do to help at the moment.

The week or so since the crew had arrived in Harrowpine would forever mark its history, and not for the better. But Daggat rested well with the knowledge that he didn't really care what happened to the humans. Current opinions aside, they had still attacked his party.

Elyndris wagged a tentacle, "Not yet, we need to turn in the quest. We might get skill scrolls or something."

Daggat nodded, "We've got the ears?"

Klaw summoned a large bag from the inventory, "Got 'em. Couple of human ears in there too, you never know."

Zuss rolled her eyes, "I'll wake it up." She trotted over to the altar, which was still on its side. With a sharp kick, the altar hummed to life. It took the form of a humanoid with four arms and eight eyes, an arachne.

Anath shivered, "Eww… can you be something else?"

The altar ignored her, "How can I be of assistance, Keeper?" It addressed Zuss.

Klaw tossed the bag over, and Daggat caught it with telekinesis.

He presented it to the altar, "You know the drill. Quest turn-in time."

The altar looked to Zuss, who nodded sharply. "Very well." Their bag shrank as the ears within disappeared. "You have slain a powerful beast, high in the command chain. This deserves a reward."

At their feet, three silver boxes and one gold box materialized. The crew made a collective sound of awe.

Daggat tried to rub his hands together and ignored the fact that he couldn't, "Excellent! As always, stuff goes to who best can use 'em. If no one can, we sell it."

They opened the first three boxes together. They contain a skill potion, a skill scroll, and a small paper book.

Elyndris quivered in excitement, "Ooh! I want the skill potion. I am sorely behind on skills."

"Well, hold on. What's the skill scroll?" Anath asked.

Daggat unraveled it, "Critical Hit, every attack has a five percent chance to deal critical damage. Whatever that means."

The Assistant floated over to look, "That could be just what Zuss needs. Or you could simply take it for yourself; you are the leader."

Daggat rubbed his chin thoughtfully, "Zuss, critical damage could help with your strength issue."

Anath raised a hand, "I hit a LOT. More critical chances, right?"

Zuss deflated slightly.

"It would do me good as well," Klaw said, "But Anath and I have classes. We could find how to get the skill naturally, maybe."

"What about MY skills? I don't have a class." Elyndris said.

Daggat tossed the scroll to Zuss, "Elyndris, I plan to buy you plenty of skill potions soon. Let's give it to Zuss; maybe it can unlock something for her."

Elyndris relented, and Zuss drank the potion. She then held the scroll in one hand. A moment later, it faded away.

Hunter leaned in, "What's the book?"

Daggat flipped through it, "Initiate of the Mask. It's… oh, there are lots of pictures. It's a PATHBOOK! Finally!" He copied it immediately.

"Aren't those for classes? Why is it good?" Hunter asked.

"They give us insight on how classes work, skill combinations, maybe feats. Give me a day or so with it, I am sure I can find something useful."

Anath shifted in anticipation, "Time for the gold box?"

Daggat grinned at her, "It is indeed. Let's see what we get!"

The box had bronze fabric tied into a bow. Daggat pulled it. With a flash of golden light, the box disappeared. In its place was a tall, thin glass pitcher. Within the pitcher swirled liquid.

Daggat felt his smile widening further still. He could see the mana around the pitcher quiver and shift into chaos essence. Whatever this stuff was, it was brimming with chaos.

"It's a pitcher, like the one we want to get from the town. Pitchers are like divine potions, but have five uses."

"What's inside?" asked Hunter.

"I don't know," Daggat admitted, "Elyndris?"

Her face contorted in memory, "Uhh…"

"I think it might be a mutation," The Assistant said.

"What? How do you know?" Daggat asked. The others had become used to him speaking to thin air.

"Yesterday, I wrote down all Elyndris had to say. I cross-referenced her memories with our book on divine rewards. If it is what I assume, those who drink it will gain a random biotrait. But it can pull from a wider pool of choices than the imbiber normally has. So, we may end up with something… fun."

An idea was clicking away in Daggat's head. This might be exactly what he needed. But, another side of him reminded him that his party may be interested in using it as well. He could sacrifice one potion, perhaps. He explained to the party.

"So, anyone willing to take a risk? I have a use for this pitcher, but one potion should be fine."

Anath looked queasy, "I've already have a lot going on."

"I like more fine-tuning on my biotraits," said Klaw.

Elyndris waved a tentacle in the air, "I'll do it! If it is a mistake, I can fix it in one of my other forms. But, what's the worst that can happen?"

Daggat fished out an empty bottle from his inventory, which he used for alchemy, and poured a glass. He used a combination of his arm and telekinesis. Specifically, he used his missing arm as though it were there and allowed his telekinesis to do the work. It was important to forget that he lost it.

He floated over the jar, "Open up!"

Elyndris opened her jaws, and Daggat poured the potion into her mouth.

After a moment, nothing seemed to happen. Then, Elyndris chuckled. She opened her mouth slightly, then she chirped.

The sound was a high-pitched, reverberating chirp mixed with a deep, growling bark. She repeated it every half-second or so. It seemed to echo from within Daggat's head. It was primal, something more terrifying than a roar or a growl. A predators acknowledgement that it had found prey. Daggat shivered. The noise reminded him that, at his core, he was just a tiny goblin. Prey for creatures much larger and older than he.

And that was with Hunter's aura.

"What was THAT?" Klaw asked.

Elyndris chuckled, "Predators Bark. It spikes fear in those who hear it."

"Cool," Muttered Zuss.

Daggat patted her on the back, then withdrew his arm as she snapped at him. "Very good. Now, leveling. I think the most useful skill gains, for us all, would be from Hunter. Everyone, to the status void."

Their little rest area was already decorated by Anath when Daggat entered. She had small flowers blooming around the place, and the scent of spring rain mingled with the fire. The flame itself had been carried over as a large, pink fire that produced no smoke.

The two assistants were there, already scrolling through options.

"We have a few possible routes for you to go, Hunter." Said the Assistant, "Personally, I prefer the route with maximum carnage." Hunter made a pained face, but allowed him to continue. "Upgrade the torch, and brilliant bash. You're size would make you a formidable warrior."

Klaw laughed, "That'd be a sight, but I don't want to have to fight between his feet."

Hunter scratched the back of his head. "I want to focus on healing."

Daggat dragged over Hunter's stats, "Well, you are close to the apex of sacred flame."

"I believe those are called Mastery, Master."

Daggat waved away the assistant, "We don't know how good a skill… Mastery is. That would be one point. Then one for healing, maybe? Get a perk for it."

Hunter nodded, "Sounds fine to me. I don't really get it all. Thank you for helping me with it, everyone."

First, he upgraded Sacred Flame to level five. It did unlock a mastery. In its case, untethered and demons within the aura now take continuous damage. So did all enemies, but at a reduced rate. Shared will is also applied to all uses of will, rather than just defensively. Immediately, a notification appeared in front of everyone.

"Oh! I remember this one!" Elyndris cried once the feat notification went away. "This skill limits infinite bonuses. But we can upgrade it to be affected by it more. It's the angels' quick and dirty fix for their flawed system."

Daggat compared the two skills, "So, while around each other, Klaw uses Hunter's will, which caused Righteous Aura to increase Hunter's will by ten percent of his own will, which in turn sets Klaw's will to that value. Then it just keeps bouncing back and forth. Hunter, what is your will, now?"

"Nineteen."

The Assistant floated to the center, "The limiter skill force stops the recursive loop after three steps. I would have to do some math to figure out how much we are missing out on."

Anath raised two hands, "Umm… what?"

Daggat sighed, "Don't worry about it. Basically, they both work together, and now everyone's will is nineteen. While Hunter's torch is out and Klaw is around, at least."

Next, they moved on to the healing skills. For the apprentice level, there were three options. Diagnosis, Enhanced Recovery, and Slow Infection.

Diagnosis would give Hunter an interface to better diagnose patients with known issues and diseases. Enhanced Recovery was an active skill that allowed Hunter to instantly heal a creature as though they had rested for an hour, usable once per hour. Slow Infection does as it says, slowing any infections.

Because of Enhanced Recovery, combined with Hunter's Hearth abilities, would increase healing even further, it was an instant purchase.

Finding a way to better heal the crew after an intense battle was the current goal, so they looked into the perks for Enhanced Recovery. Split Focus allowed a second user per hour, but on a different target. Pain Relief reduced the pain of a wound for an hour. Finally, Flash Fever caused the target to heal diseases and poisons even better. His final skill point went into Split Focus.

Keaton's wisdom did help their decisions. Skills relating to setting bones, surgery, and creating medicines required a higher level of the healing skill. But, for now, he would just need to learn.

Once finished, Hunter slowly lowered a finger towards Daggat, then poked him. Instantly, his stump flashed with an intense itch. His jaw flared as well.

"Agh! Don't do that!" Daggat said, trying to itch at the cast.

"That was six hours of healing in one instant! How do you feel?"

"Itchy." Daggat looked around, "Who's next?"

Klaw shifted in his seat, "I've been thinking on my upgrades. Got three biotraits right now. I am happy with most of my stuff. Don't want to make myself heavier. So-"

Elyndris waved a tentacle, "Oh, RIGHT! I almost forgot. Klaw. You want Muscle Helix."

"What's it do?"

"First, it will increase your strength by one and a half times what you've spent on it. Then, there is an upgrade for it called Inherited Strength. It makes it so your class and genesis bonus are increased, too. There are two other skills. Triple Helix, which makes you lose half of the strength you would if it were drained. And Tension Coils. That increases burst strength, like jumping, striking, and so on. I don't know what its apex does, but if you combine it with redundant organs, it all applies to constitution too."

Klaw was drooling, "Yep, doing that. Any problems?"

Daggat shook his head.

He purchased Muscle Helix, then purchased Inherited Strength. Klaw decided to purchase redundant organs, if anything, just to be tougher, but he held off on combining the skills. The muscle Helix apex was too appealing.

This bumped his strength to a mind-boggling twenty-seven.

Finally, Anath. She had one skill point to spend and two biotraits.

Her skill point went into upgrading Great Vitality. Its options included Great Recovery, which increased her healing rate from double to triple. Bone Setter, which caused her body to set broken bones over time. And Rot Resistance, which did the same thing as her biotrait. She opted for Great Recovery. Meaning every day spent healing at Hunters' hearth was now eighteen days.

There was some debate on Anath's biotraits. She was still hesitant to change herself too much all at once. But the idea of creating silk cloth appealed to her.

So, the points went into her spinnerets. Enhanced Production and Reinforced Webs were chosen. It increased the rate at which her body produced web and made the web stronger. Combined with her strength infusion, her webs were nearly unbreakable. The last mutation was Sticky Webs, which increased the stickiness of the web produced.

Daggat had a skill point, but it could only be spent on leadership, tactics, or logistics. He did not have tactics or logistics, but he did have apprenticeship leadership. He had earned it shortly after defeating the demon.

Looking at the skills available to him there, as usual, there were three. Inspiring Speech improved his charm when performing a speech to allies. Not very useful at the moment, but it could combine if he had any speech skills. Chain of Command allowed Daggat to choose a second in command. This second in command gained the benefits of Daggat's leadership skills while he was unconscious. Aura of Authority was the third. It gave him yet another aura. This one essentially informs others in the aura that he is in charge. That one intrigued him but it wouldn't actually be any help. Its upgrades were surely fantastic, but he didn't want to risk it. Ultimately, he opted to wait until his tactics skill increased. Logistics was not something he was planning to work on.

Once the last of the points were spent, Daggat turned towards Elyndris, "So, when are you going to make the next form?"

"I want to receive my mark first. Then I can build around it if necessary. Speaking of builds, you have a biotrait, yes?"

"I do, but I was going to save it for the evolution."

Elyndris waved a tentacle dismissively, "You will level soon after. I have something that will help you now. Efficient Neurology."

"Does it do as I hope?"

"It does the same thing Muscle Helix does, but for Intelligence, yes."

"Why would you tell me about it NOW? Why not before?"

"Well, I think you have to get some brainwork done. Like with your psychic."

"Ah, that makes sense. But, I don't think it will do much right away. Can it be upgraded to work with genesis stats?"

"Indeed."

"Then, the moment I have two free biotraits, I take it. Thanks." Daggat faced the group as a whole, "Now, let's talk about the next couple of weeks. I have a plan… but I don't know what you all would think of it."
