149 - Daggat: To be Goblin Teeth


Daggat had assumed he would need to cut a hole in the chairs for his tail. Turns out, it quite comfortably curled to the side; he just couldn't lounge as he had before.

The rest of the party was present. Even Alfred sat in a darkened corner of the table near Klaw. His small, almost doll-like form would have been unnerving if the party hadn't seen worse.

The three assistants and Spider were gathered away from the table, all speaking in low voices.

"Why do you keep dragging us to these meetings? Just send messages." Klaw said.

"I like meetings." Daggat said, "They keep us all on the same page, and they help me think."

"Where's Elly?" Anath asked. She squeaked as Elyndris undoubtedly formed a mental bridge with her.

The golden crown around Hunter's head slithered down his face and neck, then onto the table through his arm.

The Golden Crown: <This form uses traits from creatures not of this world. I can meld my flesh with the willing, for now.>

She used the messaging system to talk to us all.

Daggat marveled at her new shine, "Really? I would have expected you to take a more… ferocious form. Something more self-sufficient."

The Golden Crown: <Yes. This is important, so I want you all to listen. This form is purely mental. Its purpose is to aid and bolster your abilities and to perform great feats of magic. This form is also a thing of subterfuge. Designed to appear like jewelry. So while I am melded with you, act as though my abilities are yours. Among other abilities, I can communicate with anyone I know from any distance.>

Anath poked Elyndris, "It's weird, but cool! What made you choose a crown? Why not armor or something like that?"

The Golden Crown: <Because this form is not for slaying individuals. It is for conquering nations. Now. You two, explain your forms.>

Daggat chuckled, "Very well. I am no longer a goblin. I am a Gancanagh. A fae that hyper focuses on charm. With a bit of my old goblin charm. My new abilities simply improve my charm and provide an aura of peace, like Hunter." He decided to make his regeneration a surprise. No one knew about that ability yet.

The group looked towards Zuss.

She sighed, "I am a Glaukix. Wings. Frost powers. Speed."

"And she's furry!" Annath added with a giggle.

The group chuckled as Zuss sank into her chair.

"We're not the only ones to improve. Alfred, how have the new levels been treating you?"

Alfred looked towards Daggat with a blank expression. "I have grown more powerful. Yes. But my power is limited here, to the manor. My home. My haunt."

"So," Klaw asked, "do undead evolve or something at level fifteen?"

"Perhaps. I can ascend. Except I made a mistake. To reach the next stage, I should have fully upgraded at least three of my curses. But I misplaced my points."

The Golden Crown: <Bah. Angels are punishing us again with their flawed system.>

Alfred shrugged, "Perhaps. Though I thought about it some. Most undead are formed by the direct intervention of demons. So, it would make sense that the angels wouldn't want to let the minions of demons attain too much power. For those undead that are made by other means, they would have the guidance or foreknowledge to ascend."

Daggat clicked his tongue, "So we need to find you a curse or two? I'll add that to the list."

Alfred shook his head, "Don't bother. Power is not my motivation. Just find a way to return me to life."

Daggat shook his head, "Hey, if you're going to be a member of Goblin Teeth, you have to grow. That's our thing. Speaking of which, we need to get on some spell feats."

"Goblin Teeth?" At least three people said at once.

Daggat grinned, "I think it would do great as a team name. You know, we get knocked out but only come back stronger. Fits."

"Kind of stupid," Klaw said.

"I like it," Hunter added.

"But… teeth?" Asked Anath.

"Why not hobgoblin teeth?" Zuss said.

"Bugbear Teeth," Klaw said.

Alfred hovered from his seat, "Either way. I'm not truly a part of the team. We have a contract. That is it."

Daggat pushed him back down with telekinesis, "Yeah, I call orc shit on that. You are as much a part of this party as anyone else. Like it or not."

"I can't even leave this manor. I hardly know any of you."

"So? Just because you aren't walking around with us doesn't mean we can't chat. Besides, we all share a common experience. That's what makes you Goblin Teeth. And we only met a few days before we met you. Basically the same time."

"I have unlived for decades under the control of a demon. What experiences do we share?

"Each of us has had the worst possible start in this world. Enslaved from birth. Lost loved ones. Imprisoned in your own home. You've seen the worst of it, from what I've gathered. But we each came out stronger than before. THAT'S goblin teeth."

"The druid counts, in that case," Zuss said dryly.

Daggat nodded, "he's Goblin Teeth, for sure. Look, the point is, Al, you are one of us. That's why you are here, because we do things as a group."

There was the faintest hint of a smile at the edge of Alfred's mouth, "Very well. I accept being a member of Goblin teeth, if it soothes you."

Anath clapped with all four hands, and Klaw slapped him on the back with a dull thud. Hunter hummed happily.

Alfred tolerated them, "There is one thing I can do to help. I have an ability that allows me to curse someone. This curse sends their soul to the manor in their sleep."

"How's that helpful?" Klaw asked.

"When you rest, each of you will come here, to this cursed place. You can speak, plan, practice, or even have access to the library. Daggat, I am not sure, but your psychic abilities should still be useful in that state."

"The whole library!?" Daggat squealed.

Klaw winced at the noise, "What happens if we die in the dream thingy?"

Alfred shrugged, "I don't know. But I don't think you would die."

"Oh… we're gonna train like CRAZY," Klaw said with a grin. The rest of the party shuddered.

"We can test it tonight on an orc. Anything else?" Daggat asked. Alfred shook his head. "Great! Moving on. I have purchased an upgrade for my Efficient Neurology. Inherited Intelligence. As expected, my variance counts as natural intelligence. This brought my Intelligence alllll the way to… Thirty-two! That earned me the feat Vast Intelligence."

Zuss clapped slowly, "Gratz."

Daggat nodded, "With it came three choices. Photographic memory, which is useless with my notes. Fast Learner, which guides me in learning natural skills. And Mathematician, which gives me an interface to help with calculations. Naturally, I selected Fast Learner."

The Golden Crown: <When I reach these heights, I will choose mathematician. It will be handy when calculating spell properties and trajectory.>

"Good thinking." Daggat said, "Klaw, you're up."

"What are you-" He stated, then Daggat threw him a potion. "Oh. Thanks!"

He drank it down.

"How come he gets potions?" Anath asked, "I've never had any! He's had three."

"Don't worry, Anath. We will get everyone potions eventually. Everyone can have up to five skill, growth, and biotrait potions. But it might take a bit. Besides, Klaw is on the cusp of thirty strength. We need that if the orcs attack."

"I want to know what he gets to choose." Hunter said, "One day, I might be big and strong enough to choose. But, I think Will will be first."

"Here goes," Klaw said as he chose the final upgrade to Muscle Helix, reaching its apex, "Whoa! Up six points to thirty-three. Looks like it changed one for two points to one for one. Got the feat. Colossal Strength."

"The options?" Anath asked at the edge of her seat.

"They are-oh." Just then, Birdy flew onto the table in front of Klaw. She took a few circling steps, then leaned into him. He awkwardly petted the cat. "Uh, hi?"

Zuss made a strangled, bird-like sound then said, "You're the only one she recognizes. Everyone else has evolved."

Ignoring the winged cat, Klaw continued, "No Contest, looks like that boosts my strength when it's being directly tested by someone else. Like an arm wrestling contest. Weight Guide allows me to intuit the weight of something and how hard it is for me to lift. Useless, I can just learn that. Mighty Leap. That's like pounce… but better? I don't know the difference."

The Golden Crown: <Pounce gives great forward movement. I happen to face upwards when I use it to jump.>

"I like the leap for you, Klaw." Daggat said, "With your weight, it'd help you move faster, and imagine crushing people underneath you."

Klaw growled, "I agree."

He locked in the choice. He startled Birdy as he pushed the chair away and leaped. He flew five feet in the air and landed with a boom.

"I hope that didn't crack the floorboards," Alfred said.

"I also synergized it with redundant organs, Dual Physiology." Klaw said, "Brought con up to eighteen. Got the feat and plague resistance. Good potion."

"Good, good," Daggat said as Klaw went back to take the seat. "Is that all for the upgrades? Anyone make any progress on their mask book stuff?" No one said anything, "Well. Let's keep working on them when we can. Now… we have orcs outside our door. What do we know?"

"They have weapons skills," Zuss said.

Alfred cleared his throat. Being undead, it was just to gather attention. "The orcs have come seeking wealth and shelter, fleeing from the battle you won after betraying the goblin war boss, Hogo Brittleblade. They fear Rika's wrath, and thus want to hold up somewhere defensible."

Daggat bridged his fingers and his tail swished back and forth in thought, "So. They find this place and send in a scout. You frighten him, but convince the orcs to meet with me. We're thinking a labor force?"

"Orc work is shoddy." Klaw said, "Remember the walls?"

"Right. But, it's better than nothing," Daggat said.

"Why do we want laborers?" Anath asked.

"If we can achieve a workforce," Alfred said, "Then we can start creating wealth and a reputation. With these, we can expand Titanfell into the city it was meant to be."

Hunter smiled, "Then we can get all sorts of stuff. And people. Can we really do that?"

Daggat frowned. "Well, there are a few issues. One, we are all monsters. Working folk aren't gonna want to just show up and work for monsters. So, if we want people, we have to take them. Also, we can't hurt the trees. So, no logging."

"No logging?" Alfred asked, "That was the original enterprise. How can we survive without it?"

"The alternative is making an enemy of the trees, and trust me… we don't want that." Daggat shivered at the thought, "No, we need something else."

Alfred pinched the bridge of his nose, "Then what do you suggest? My primary goal is to return my home to its former glory. That cannot be done by seven monsters."

"Alright. Few issues need solving," Daggat said, "First is supplies. We have old wood we can use, but that won't last us long. BUT! This forest is chock full of old ruins. I was reading musings about that the other day in an old almanac; dig deep enough, you find some. These ruins were made with a special brick that helped them resist the wear of time. I think we use those."

"What?" Zuss asked, "Tear apart every ruin we find?"

"Sure," Daggat said, "Why not?"

"It would be a lot of work," Hunter said.

"That's why we outsource it. Pay per brick. When those run out, we can go to the mountains. Maybe trade with Highgaol, if that town is still around." Highgaol was a town to the east on the map, in the mountains.

"That or mud bricks," Alfred said dryly. "A challenge, and expensive. But possible. You mentioned other problems?"

"People and money. We've all but subjugated that village, and there are refugees aplenty if we look for them. Rika couldn't have killed them all. Plus, there are the surviving goblins, who want to work under me. And of course, the orcs. But… I don't know much about them."

The Golden Crown: <A mix of mortals and monsters to serve us? I approve.>

"As for money," Daggat continued, "We have a unique resource. Magic."

"Interesting," Alfred said, "Continue."

Daggat leaned in excitedly. "So, the fountain fills this forest with magic. Elyndris and I can see it. Find strong sources of essence. I say we teach these methods to the goblins, or get some open-minded humans to become monsters."

The Golden Crown: <If we teach them to cast magic, then it is only three biotraits for thaumic sense.>

Daggat nodded, "We map the essence farms. Help them grow, harvest the totems, and make new ones. Export these."

Alfred considered this for a long moment, "This would draw the attention of the neighboring kingdom. We would face opposition once they realize what we have done."

Klaw laughed, "Oh, good. Let them come at us."

"We're planning so far ahead," Anath said. "Can we really build something like this?"

Daggat gave her a warm smile, "Didn't I already prove we can do anything? My kind have destroyed this forest. It is my responsibility to fix that. This doesn't need to be a fearful thicket of monsters. It could be a terrible thicket of monsters who want to trade!"

"I like these plans." Alfred said, "I will write the contracts for brick collectors, builders, and hunters. Food is needed as well."

Daggat rubbed his hands together, "Great! And when it is all set up and stable, the rest of us can explore this world with the knowledge of a safe haven to return to."

"' Course, we still need to get rid of Rika," Klaw added.

Daggat grinned, "Oh, of course."
