Thrymja and Daggat talked into the night, sharing stories and other tidbits of goblin and orc lives. How orcs were not squeamish about where their food came from, but they only ate meat killed, not found. A point of pride they had put aside until the orcs discovered that, indeed, Goblin Teeth had killed everything they ate.
They also value bravery and struggle. To an orc, climbing a mountain has more value than going around it. Though they were not stupid. Orcs knew when to pack their pride away and do the smart thing.
Another point of interest that, again, would be most useful to Klaw is that the orcs have developed their own martial arts. To attain a higher skill level in weapon natural skills, you must learn advanced forms of combat. For the orcs, that meant a myriad of ways to fight with efficiency or brutality. If you had the time, it was always better to frighten your living foes. That was how reputation spreads. In the world of monster mercenaries, reputation is worth more than gold.
Daggat also learned that these orcs, the Evergreen Maw tribe, sold their swords to humans, as well as goblins. There has been conflict in this forest for decades. Little disputes between towns and villages. Plant a field on the wrong hill, and next season you may find a horde at your doorstep.
Orcs were also creatures of the twilight. Resting in short bursts at night and several times during the day, preferring to hunt and fight at both dawn and dusk. So, with a polite exit, Thrymja went to rest for the night.
His people would rest in their camp for now. Daggat hoped to ease them into taking more permanent homes. That would be done after the battle, once Daggat proved himself with victory.
"Hey, Al." Daggat said before turning in, "How does this dream thing work, again?"
Alfred: <You will learn soon enough. Rest, and trust me to watch the manor.>
Daggat wasn't worried about that. If Thrymja, or Kaorok, more likely, decided to attack, Alfred was bound by the contract to defend the manor.
While he drifted off to sleep, Daggat idly wondered how hard it would be to remove this curse Alfred inflicted on him. It couldn't be too difficult, given how easy the curse was to get. Probably a basic cleric ability or something you can fix in town.
Eh, if it becomes a problem, they'll figure it out.
It took some time for Daggat to fall asleep, but finally, his mind began to settle.
Then he was in the great hall.
"Hello, Daggat," Alfred said, floating a few feet away. "And others."
Daggat's assistants floated near him, and Klaw lounged in a chair.
"So, this is the curse?" Daggat asked.
"It is supposed to be more terrifying." Alfred admitted, "But I kept the world as it is."
"Can't move stuff, though," Klaw said with a bitter note.
Daggat moved the chair from under him with telekinesis, "Looks like I can just fine."
Klaw, crawling to his feet, growled at Daggat, "I bet I know what I can touch…" His claws snapped open.
"Before you tear Daggat apart, let's test death, shall we?" Alfred said.
Daggat stuck his tongue out at Klaw, "Got that orc?"
"Actually," Alfred said, "I didn't want to risk damaging our reputation. So, I found this sleeping instead." A small mouse floated by, shivering in fear.
Anath suddenly appeared in her chair. "Huh?"
Daggat waved at her, "Oh, great timing. You're in time to watch us kill a mouse. Go ahead."
The mouse's head twisted sharply to one side with a tiny crack. It didn't even have time to squeak in pain.
Anath squeeked instead, shocked at the sight. "WHY?!" She cried. Spider scuttled on the table, excitedly running from person to person.
"Oh," Alfred said, ignoring the distressed arachne, "it is alive. Back to sleep."
"Good to know," Klaw said, leaping onto the table.
"Wait! Wait!" Daggat cried, "Let's figure out how this helps us first. THEN I can kill you."
Klaw scoffed, "Yeah, whatever. Fine."
"So this is a dream?" Anath said, unsure.
"Not like I am used to," Another voice said. Daggat didn't notice Elyndris arriving. She was in her golden form. "I am not a worm in my dreams. Hey, I can talk. How come I can talk?"
"Must be because of your telepathy. Everybody's abilities still work?" Daggat asked.
Klaw slashed at nothing, and a glowing blade of air slammed into the wall. Anath created a web, which Elyndris slithered up and into Anath's arm.
Daggat's psionic powers were working. He flicked his thumb, but no flame came. Then he tried to enter the status void, and found he couldn't.
"Mystery after mystery. Hey, Al, can you make objects?"
"I can try. There is a veil between the real world and your dream, which I can peer into. It is similar to my labyrinth."
Anath screamed as a pile of heads rained from the ceiling. They were of orcs and humans, a few goblinoids too. Spider skittered out of the way and onto Anath, who nearly fell over from the shock.
"I can touch you?!" She said with glee.
"Yes! Yes! You are spirit, yes." Spider said while it crawled all over her.
Anath giggled and finally captured the assistant, then held it close to her chest like a stuffed animal.
Klaw picked one of the skulls up. "Really?"
"Apologies, I have a difficult time not creating… terrifying imagery. An effect of one of my curses."
"Don't care if they're skulls, can you make them bigger?" Klaw asked, "I want to practice weight training."
Daggat laughed, "That won't work, Klaw. You don't have a body. We are just disembodied souls. Use your head."
"How about YOU use your head, idiot." Klaw said, "The skills have nothing to do with our bodies. It's just the tricks we know. I can't outwork my stats, anyway."
"That's… right," Daggat said, then he scowled. "Fuck you." He added quickly.
Klaw flipped him off, "Well, anyway, I like the feeling after a workout. Anath!"
She jumped. Anath had been having a private conversation with Elyndris, "What?"
"Up for a spar? We can practice to fight here, at least. And we can take off the kid gloves a bit. Get a bit rough with it."
"Oh… sure." She shrugged. Four swords fell from the ceiling. They were dripping with blood and seemed to be made of fresh bones. "Thanks?"
"You are welcome," Alfred said.
"Hey, where's Hunter and Zuss?" Daggat asked.
"Hunter is in the kitchen. Zuss has been tossing and turning in her bed for a while." Alfred answered without hesitation.
"Really?" Daggat asked, then he hopped from his chair and dashed to the kitchen.
Just as Alfred said, there he was. Leaning over the table, sawing a piece of leftover giant. He was making himself a snack.
"Whatchya doing, buddy?" Daggat asked.
He didn't reply.
"He can't see or hear you, Master." His assistant said.
Giggles chuckled, and Daggat noticed him holding a knife over Hunter's head.
"No!" Daggat said, then used his own telekinesis to push the knife away. It spun and then thunked into a shelf.
Hunter jumped, spilling a cup of water. "Who's there?" He noticed the knife, then spun, summoning his torch. Looks like it had healed, which is what Daggat suspected. It was technically a new day, after all.
Except, that torch was far too bright, far too painful. Daggat had to back away. He turned to the laughing assistant, "What the fuck!?"
"What? It was a small prank. He wouldn't have died." Giggles said.
"Oh, I think you've angered our master. I've never managed it." Said the original.
"Please, don't fight." Whispered Jitters.
Daggat grabbed Giggles, finding him solid. His form felt unstable under his fingers. He dragged the assistant close to his face, "If you ever try to hurt an ally again, I will find a way to make you suffer. Even if I have to bear it with you. You understand? You know I can, and will, find a way."
Giggles gulped, "Okay, I understand." Daggat released him, "You're more fun in your body."
Fleeing the bright torch, Daggat went back to the main hall.
He found Klaw and Anath in an intense duel. Claws, spiderlegs, and swords scraped against each other, sending sparks flying. Both wore intense, furious smiles.
Daggat watched them for a while. Noting that the occasional knick and cut did cause blood. "Having fun?" He finally asked.
"We don't get tired!" Anath said.
"Doesn't hurt as much, either." Added Klaw.
Elyndris was wrapped around Anath's head, offering guidance and warnings. She was improving her ability to work with whoever she was melded to.
Now, Daggat was no expert. But by now, he's seen enough fighting to have somewhat of an eye for it. Klaw was clearly superior when it came to skill. The only reason he struggled was that Anath had an unfair number of weapons.
But Anath frequently got caught up in her own legs. She had to wait for her own defenses to move out of the way to swing. She had control of her limbs; there were just so many of them. Also, Daggat had a feeling Klaw was still holding back.
"Hey, guys, stop a moment," Daggat said.
They broke their fight, leaping away from each other.
"You wanna go?" Klaw asked.
"No, just some notes. Not for you, Klaw, you're beautiful. Keep it up, babe." Daggat focused on Anath, "Anath! You've got some issues."
"What?" She asked, her spider legs drooping, "I was doing good!"
"Sure, sure. But you kept getting hung up on your legs."
"It's true," Elyndris said, "your range of motion is restricted."
"Well, I can still fight!" she said.
"Have you tried something… I don't know. Pointy? Like, stabby. Less slicey."
"Oh, like a needle," Anath said. "Maybe… but we don't have any."
Daggat waved a dismissive hand, "Don't sweat that. We can get you what you need. Al, you wanna get her something pokey?" He had left, but could still hear.
Four rapiers fell and impaled themselves on the table. Their hilt guards were life-like hands, but they weren't made of blood.
Anath scowled at them, "I don't know… I can try."
"Come on, hurry up! Fight me!" Klaw said eagerly.
Zuss faded in and looked around the environment frantically. In a moment, she was atop the hearth with blades in both hands.
"Relax, Zuss, just the curse dream thing." Daggat said, "Let's get you caught up…"
He explained the functionality to her while the others fought, then had to explain all over again when Hunter showed up.
After some more acclimating, Zuss and Hunter decided to spend the time working on skills. Zuss moved shadow squares and circles in odd ways, while Hunter was doing his best to make shadow rabbits with his thick fingers.
Klaw and Anath went back to the fight, this time slower, so Anath could get used to the weapons.
Daggat went up to the library and spent the time browsing books. All knowledge was good knowledge, and there was still so much to find here. This library was the greatest treasure Daggat could have asked for.
"Hey, Al, up for a game?" Daggat asked, finding the boy reading from a large tome.
"It has been some time, sure."
He set the board up, and the two made war. Neither touched the board, using telekinesis to move the pieces.
This game, Daggat had a goal that wasn't just to win. He wanted to work on his skills as well. Specifically, tactics.
So, instead of treating the game as, well, a game, he viewed his pieces as soldiers and generals. Living people who fought on his behalf. Thinking beyond the rules of the game, and using principles of strategy outlined in the very book he was browsing while they played.
Push to create pressure. Maneuver your men to bolster defenses. Never leave your back line open to attack, and look for any weakness.
Then, finally, on his third game of the night, Daggat won.
"Well done," Alfred said. His smile was visible, which meant he was ecstatic, as far as Alfred went. "I haven't been beaten in nearly half a century."
Daggat chuckled, "It was a good streak… while it lasted."
They played twice more, with one win to each, until, finally, he woke.
The sensation was strange, like falling asleep, but in reverse.
He blinked sleep from his eyes and yawned. He had just been dreaming, right?
Something about Kingless and his companions. And skulls?
He shrugged, then went about his day.
Daggat made it to his door before he realized they were supposed to experience a shared dream. It had fled from his mind like any dream would.
"FUCK!" He said.
Alfred: <We can play again, if you didn't mean to waken.>
"No… I forgot what we were dreaming. Damn it all." So, that dream thing was a bust.
Idly, he checked his stats. He often opened his statistics in the morning, not to check if anything new appeared, but just to remind him of his growth so far.
There, in his natural skills section, was Tactics at apprentice level.
Well… maybe the dream DID work. He messaged the party.
Daggat the Beautiful: <Wake up! Meeting time, I need to check something.>
He raced to the hall where the others' rooms were and knocked on each one, then waited in the hall.
Soon, his companions groggily wandered in.
"What!?" Klaw groaned, "It's early."
"Klaw! Do you remember your dream?" Daggat asked.
"Yeah… uh, I was fighting. Don't remember the details." A moment passed, "Ah, damn it all."
"That's what I said!" Daggat said, "But I still earned a skill up last night. Check your stats, everyone."
"Oh, he's right." Zuss said, "I have Contact Juggling now and a feat prompt. Master Juggler. Just going to… got it. Advanced Object Manipulation."
"Can you do it? Or is it just… words in the system." Hunter asked.
She shrugged, then summoned a black orb. Her hand glided over and around it, as though she was rubbing a stationary object. Her eyes went wide, "I can do it! A lot easier than before."
"So the dream works. We can train skills while we sleep. Work on physical stuff while awake! This is HUGE!" Daggat jumped to the table, "We can fight each other more seriously, boosting our combat experience tenfold! Tedium isn't an issue, since we forget the dream. I was hoping to use the dream as a way to communicate, but this is just as good."
"Another tool that makes us better than the rest," Elyndris said, "My knowledge, your madness, Klaw's spirit, Hunters' food, and now this."
"What about me?" Anath asked. "And Zuss."
"You are a terror on the battlefield, and Zuss is as cold-blooded as killers come," Elyndris said.
"Thank you," Zuss said. Her ears fluttered in embarrassed joy.
"Don't think you are all off the hook from real training," Klaw said, "We still need to test our new capabilities every few days."
"And Al can work on his magic with Elyndris," Daggat said, then he looked up. "That's right, buddy. You aren't going to get out of training just cause it's your dream."
"Very well," Alfred said as he hovered into the room. "You should know, by the way, some orcs are knocking on the gate. They have prisoners."
