Hero or Villain, Both

Chapter 293: Award ceremony

"For your valiance and your bravery, we award you with this medal of courage." King Abel XIV said before placing the medal on my chest.

After he did this, there was a cheer that erupted from around us.

This cheer that came from the crowd was filled with enthusiasm.

It wasn't a fake kind of cheer that would come from a crowd that was just cheering to go along with the ceremony. It was the real kind of cheer from a crowd that was completely moved by this ceremony.

That was because the ones that were currently in the crowd were the refugees that came from the Deter Kingdom.

After the demon invasion of the Deter Kingdom, we had brought the people that we had saved back with us to the Abel Kingdom.

Since the demons had completely ransacked the capital of the Deter Kingdom, it wasn't as if these refugees were able to return right away. That was why they were currently in the capital of the Abel Kingdom where this ceremony was being held.

As for what this ceremony was, it was a ceremony to recognize my bravery in saving the people of the Deter Kingdom.

What I had done after retreating was guide the people of the Deter Kingdom back.

These refugees had seen everything that we had done to protect them from the demons that attacked while we were escaping, which was why they were so excited about me receiving this reward.

In their eyes, I was a true hero that had saved them.

The Abel Kingdom had capitalized on this by holding this ceremony since they wanted to raise the prestige of the hero that they supported.

I knew that this was a step that was necessary to be formally recognized as a hero by human society, which was why I went through with it.

But it still felt awkward playing the part.

After King Abel XIV put the medal on me, I stood up and he took me by the shoulder while waving at the crowd.

I had to awkwardly wave to all the people that were cheering and take in the admiration that they gave, but I knew that this was just a show. That was why it felt awkward to accept this kind of admiration.

Still, the other reason that we were doing this was because King Abel XIV wanted to raise the morale of not just the people of the Deter Kingdom. He also wanted to show the people of the Abel Kingdom that there was a hero and that the hero was on their side.

After all, what he was about to do required the Abel Kingdom to go against the demons.

Once the ceremony was over, I followed King Abel XIV to a smaller room.

However, it wasn't as if this room was that small, it was just small compared to the hall that we held that ceremony in. This room was still quite large as there were several people that were in this room with us.

Each of them had a role to play in this place since they were all important officials of the Abel Kingdom.

They were here because of what we were about to discuss.

"The expedition force to the Deter Kingdom, I believe that we should allow the hero to lead it."

There were several buff men in this room that showed displeased looks when King Abel XIV suggested this.

All of them were generals that had served the Abel Kingdom for a long time now, so naturally they were unhappy when someone stepped on their turf like this.

All of them knew that this campaign to the Deter Kingdom was a big one and that it was their chance to show off what they had. If they were to achieve success in this campaign, there was no doubt that there would be glory waiting for them.

For generals like this, this was the most important thing.

But at the same time, the reason that they wanted this position was because it was one of the easier campaigns.

The demons that currently occupied the Deter Kingdom were those that had been left behind by the demons to take care of the land that they occupied. The demons had already mostly looted what they wanted from the Deter Kingdom, so it wasn't as if there was a reason for them to stay there any longer.

As long as the powerful army of the Abel Kingdom swept through these demons, then it would be an easy campaign.

That was why they wanted this position for themselves.

They couldn't accept that such a position was going to this hero.

Especially since this hero had never actually demonstrated his abilities on the battlefield before.

Even if they were nobles, they were also military people.

That was why the thing that they respected the most was achievements on the battlefield.

The hero who was a snot nosed brat in the military world would naturally be looked down on by these military people.

But it didn't seem like King Abel XIV was going to back down on this matter.

King Abel XIV was able to build the strongest kingdom because he was fully in charge of the kingdom. With his ability, he was able to completely control all of the nobles and gain their support.

So if there was a decision that he made, it wasn't as if the nobles would be able to change it.

That was why they chose to pressure me.

If I rejected this position, it wasn't as if King Abel XIV would be able to force me to take it.

However, it wasn't as if I was going to reject this position.

Instead, I looked back at the generals and said, "I know that I am new to this position, but I do have to take it. I'm sure that you've seen how the refugees from the Deter Kingdom view me, so it would be necessary for me to go."

The generals all frowned when they heard this, but they didn't deny what I said since they knew that I was right.

So that was why I said, "Instead, I hope that I will be able to serve as a symbolic leader."
