Chapter 238: Female Lawyer_3

As they were talking, Carlo knocked on the door. With an almost reverent expression, he looked at Dean. "Boss, Harry called. He said a woman claiming to be Pyle's lawyer has come to the precinct, requesting to see Pyle."

"Let her see him, but only after we get back!"

Dean then looked at Holz. "Keep sleeping, buddy. I have a hunch we'll crack this family annihilation case today. You might even be spared from performing an autopsy."

"If anyone else said that to me, I'd tell them to take a look in the mirror and get real. But if it's coming from you, Dean, then I'll take your word for it."

Holz chuckled and lay back down on the bunk bed, already snoring again before they had even left the room.

「...」

「Back at the precinct.」

Dean met the woman claiming to be Pyle the pedophile's lawyer.

She was a brunette with a long, sharp face, appearing to be in her thirties. Sitting on an empty chair in the team's meeting room with a cigarette between her fingers, she had a stern, unapproachable look.

Outside the meeting room, Harry approached Dean as soon as he saw him return, looking as if he'd seen a ghost. "Dean, you were right! Someone did come looking for Pyle. But you were only half right. She's not here to confess; she's requesting to meet with Pyle."

Dean chuckled. "That's just because Pyle hasn't said what this woman planned for him to say. So, she needs to apply a patch first, then continue with her original plan!"

"Boss, what exactly is the plan?" Carlo finally gave in to his curiosity and asked.

Harry also pricked up his ears. He knew a bit more about the case than Carlo, but he was still largely in the dark.

Just as Dean was about to explain, the woman inside the meeting room seemed to sense something. She looked out through the glass, her gaze meeting Dean's.

Dean offered her a slight smile, his expression unchanging as he continued, "There's no such thing as a perfect crime. However, if you're familiar with detectives' investigative procedures and the courts' trial processes, then a perfect defense can exist.

"To pull it off, you only need three people to cooperate. They would voluntarily confess but ensure they leave no truly incriminating evidence. They'd use different murder methods and dispose of the actual murder weapons. That's how this scheme works!

"This family annihilation case is exactly like that. Too many obvious traces were left at the crime scene.

"Now, imagine if several people, all with murder motives, voluntarily come forward to confess. However, the clues they provide don't match the evidence found at the crime scene, such as bloody footprints. Furthermore, imagine the police can't find a murder weapon consistent with the evidence at the scene.

"Do you know what would happen then?"

Carlo thought for a moment, then said hesitantly, "Too many inconsistencies, so they can't be convicted?"

"Exactly!" Dean nodded. "As long as we can't find any evidence that the three of them know each other, they can get the case overturned at trial, and the charges won't stick. A chain of evidence riddled with inconsistencies isn't enough for a conviction!"

"But this woman claims to be Pyle's lawyer, right?" Harry asked, puzzled. "In that case, how can she deny knowing Pyle?"

Dean shrugged. "Has she shown you any retainer agreement signed by Pyle? Come trial, she could claim she was overcome with sympathy after learning about Pyle's situation and just wanted to help him. How would you prove she's lying?"

Ultimately, it would still fall to them to painstakingly unearth 'irrefutable proof' that the two knew each other. But if the other party dared to make such a move, the likelihood of finding it easily was slim.

After listening, Harry looked indignant. "So, does this mean that in the future, if several criminals who don't know each other connect through some intermediary, kill each other's targets, then turn themselves in while providing misleading testimonies—as long as the police can't prove they knew each other, they could essentially get away with it at trial?"

"More or less," Dean replied. "But to perfectly evade justice, the entire process requires meticulous attention to detail. And this current case doesn't need to be that complicated!"

A grin touched Dean's lips. "I can guarantee you, the lady in that meeting room is the instigator and organizer of this family annihilation case!

"As a lawyer, she's familiar with police procedures, trial standards, and their loopholes. She's confident that the 'reasonable doubt' strategy she's employing will prevent us from building a solid case, ensuring her acquittal.

"I also believe that if we play by their rules, we'll struggle to find the concrete evidence needed to prove their joint conspiracy and overcome the 'reasonable doubt' they're counting on.

"Unfortunately for her, she's overlooked one crucial detail!"

"What is it?" Harry and Carlo asked in unison.

"Human nature!" A murderous glint flickered in Dean's eyes.

Even if he were to solve the case by the book, he was confident he could find the flaws this woman had left. But that would be too much trouble. Dean planned to let her be undone by her own supposed cleverness!
