Hearing this, Richard inadvertently looked up, and to his surprise, saw a high level magic circle open up, one which he easily recognized.
A teleportation circle.
ALmost immediately it began to rain dropbears, as they came crashing down.
RIchard could see people on the back of the dropbears, seated on bare-looking saddles, guiding them to hit better spots such as on top of the beast.
Each one came down hard, the sound of the rumbling floor like a miniature earthquake.
Despite hitting the ground at high speeds, they all quickly got up and began attacking accordingly.
It could only be said that dropbears were aptly named. They were made to drop.
It was a horrifying rain of projectile koalas that also made the adventurers uneasy. Having just seen the pure brute strength of other kaijus, to see them falling from the sky was... unnerving.
Some of them even landed directly on the kaiju, forcing it to stumble and drop a meter or two, before regaining momentum and beginning to climb again.
The creature was stubborn and terrifying.
The giant gas bags on its long neck inflated, and for a moment, Richard felt a moment of fear, an instinctual warning, an alarm ringing in his ears.
"Your ears! Cover them!" Richard screamed instinctually.
He didn't know why, but he said it nonetheless.
Some listened, some didn't.
Lysandre and the rest did it accordingly, though Alexandria ignored it.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON
What came next was something he could never describe.
An overbearing, overwhelming sound echoed forth as the creature let out a terrifying bellow.
It left him groggy for a minute as his head was left ringing from the noise.
A warm sensation seemed to trickle down his side, like an intense sweat.
He was lucky though.
The young dragon saw many with blood flowing from their ears.
It took him a minute after seeing their bleeding ears
No, he had blood flowing too. Seeing the flowing blood helped him him to realize what that warm, wet sensation was trickling down his ears. A meer dab compared to the others.
And they were the lucky ones still, for he saw some people who had not gotten up, and others without any heads, as if the sheer sound had caused their brains to pop.
In this moment of pan, the dreadnaught managed to climbout of the hole in its entirety, towering at forty meters tall.
It had a long, thin whip-like tail that swung around wildly, destroying anything it came near.
The dropbears were still squealing in pain, clutching their ears.
The only ones seemingly unbothered were the riders, who were wearing helmets covering their faces. Likely protecting against such a scenario.
A series of taps and clicks was enough to get the dropbears to focus back on the battle.
"Destroy the gasbags! Before it can charge up another one!" Said the long armed dwarf.
Naturally, all who were still alive complied.
A rain of arrows and spells came down, attacking the beast hard, yet to no avail.
Despite their inflatable nature, the skin was clearly harder than the spells. could muster.
The long armed dwarf couldn't help but curse. Class 3 kaijus weren't meant to come out so soon after all.
"Ready the crossbows!" He said, quickly pushing them to prepare the bigger siege weapons that had been meant for the later waves.
The dropbears meanwhile, were engaged in a brutal offensive on the beast, clambering all over while digging into the beasts flesh.
The dropbears, despite their small size, were in this regard, well adapted for fighting larger kaiju.
They were (relatively) nimble, and able to avoid most blows. The creature was still able to grab one occasionally, only for another two or three to begin biting onto the gasbags, forcing the beast to stop and turn its attention to the others.
In this way, the dropbears were able to escape any sorts of major damage. As a result, after the first wave of deaths, far fewer people died as a result, with close combat type adventurers taking a backseat at the moment.
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
It was a moment of reprieve, but a tense one, as they carefully observed the towering titan, fearing it would make a repeated bellowing sound.
This was not a fear unfounded as the beast began to swell the bags again, causing many to panic and plug their ears in advance, with some support adventurers even casting sound nullification spells.
Swoosh!
The whistling sound gave way to a loud pop as one of the bags deflated, the beast screeching in anguish as the pierced gas bag deflated.
The scream only had half its effectiveness, no longer bothering most of the adventurers, though the lower level ones still suffered.
Richard looked towards where the large bolt came from, seeing a huge crossbow mounted on the wall, clearly having just emerged from the wall.
This was not a good thing however, as a complicated look crossed his face.
Like the dropbears, this was clearly not meant to come out so quickly.
The most dangerous aspect of kaiju were their endurance, and because of this, the last thing a person should do is to compete in a test of endurance against such a creature.
Dropbears, while kaiju, were not high level kaiju, and would not be able to endure if put out for long periods of time.
And the crossbow was effective just now, but how many bolts could they put out? It was clearly meant to be reserved for later use.
A class 3 straight out the gate was an unpleasant surprise.
Richard wondered how the other sorrounding fortifications were holding up. Hopefully their luck wasn't as bad.
The kaiju locked its eyes on the wall, its eyes were filled with anguish and hatred. Even the dumbest of beasts could recognize the direction from which pain was derived.
The beast drived forth, ignoring all attacks that plagued it, and showing the terrifying stamina kaiju possessed. No matter how painful the spell, it was focused on the wall.
The dropbears kept gnawing and bothering the beast, but it paid them no mind, unless one started biting the gas bag, only receiving the most basic of tosses.
Before RIchard could consider exposing his true form, another bolt went flying, this time through the other bag.
Another terrible wail of anguish occurred as the beast began to drastically slow down.
Seeing this, RIchard began to understand how vital these airbags were. They were like an extra pair of lungs for the creature, which is why inhalation seemed to line up with the movements of the airbags.
And respectively, why it went so blind with rage when one popped. That would be like losing a lung! No wonder it charged so fearlessly. Perhaps it faired what would happen once the other bag popped.
The beast's momentum had dropped drastically. It still fought brutally, but there was a notable decrease in its ability to attack.
Its attacks were slower, reactions moments late, and gasping could be seen from the creatures nasally screams.
He was confused how its momentum could so drastically change.
Were the airbags were so important? They were fragile for being so vital to such a creature.
Although RIchard didn't have a deep understanding of the hollow earth, he assumed at the bare minimum that such a blatant weakness would be easily exploited.
While he was thinking, a voice came from behind him.
"They are harder than they look by the way. Those are just some really good arrows." Hearing the familiar voice, Richard turned around to greet the scholarly Que.
He was sitting on top of his mutated dropbear, inspecting the scene.
Seeing Richard's curious look, he explained. "The other stations are already finished. Station 3 got a class 2 kaiju, and station 5 a high class 2, but you're the only ones unfortunate enough to encounter a dreadnought." He pointed at the airbags again.
"Don't underestimate those airbags. Those were mythril lined arrows, saved for some higher level kaiju at the 4th or 5th class. It's just that dreadnoughts are particularly harmful on the battlefield. They're chunkier than your average kaiju, and those airbags, while more painful than lethal for kaiju, for humans, its practically a horn of death.
I suppose rather than saying the horn is dangerous, it's that the human physique is simply too weak to keep up. Even monsters survive better." Although he said it calmly, RIchard could hear the bitterness in the statement, as well as a sense of helplessness.
There were 10 classes of kaiju, and yet a mere class 3 was enough to thoroughly destroy any sense of cohesion. WIth this observation, RIchard had to agree.
Humans were simply too weak to fight against kaijus.
Well, dwarves too. Hardy as they may be, that hardiness is only relative to humans. To kaijus, an ant was still an ant.
It wasn't like the B ranks here were weak, it's just that they were ill suited for this fight. These dropbbears, despite being a primarily rank 1 kaiju, were simply more effective fighters.
"Thankfully, the gasbags are the most dangerous thing about the beast. Once you pierce them, they become much more manageable. THey're vital to their blood circulation and long term stamina. Popping them causes them to lose effectiveness quickly, especially if you seize the moment to attack.
They're also not that dangerous besides the airbags. If you look around, the amount of people the Dreadnoughtus killed compared to the others mins the times it used the airbags was significantly lower."
Recalling the fight, Richard realized he was right. Apart from the initial shock where the kaiju killed a high number of people, the amount of deaths afterwards decreased significantly.
Even though the level 1 kaiju were troublesome to fight, not many died there either.
Seeing his look of realization, Que was happy to explain. Kaiju were his specialty.
"It's true that kaiju are hard to fight due to their huge size and stamina as well as brute power, but consider it from the kaiju's perspective. We non kaiju are smaller yes, but we're also more difficult to hit. We're less strong, but we're also capable of doing more spells and techniques that kaiju, with their lack of intelligence aren't.
the greatest danger of kaiju is the property damage and attacking the masses. As long as people are properly evacuated from the battlefield, the death tolls decrease significantly.
And even though we're weaker than them and our attacks are less effective overall, the also have a hard time hitting people. Honestly, the most dangerous kaiju are usually the ones that are smaller at higher levels like the crow mother, whose size is a mere 30 meters, but packs the power of a class 8 kaiju and is extremely cunning and knows how to use tools. The bigger they get, the less effective they get at targeting single opponents.
So don't worry. This looks bad, but it's not nearly as bad as you think." He said, comforting Richard.
Richard probably couldn't tell how stiff he was at the moment, clearly worried about the people around him, and less about himself.
Of course, this was because he was sure about his own safety with sister Alexandra, and his own ability as a dragon. If he couldn't fight, he could always run. He was sure in his friends as well, as strong fights who were unlikely to be in any danger with the wyrm guardian watching over them.
To him, naturally the ones to be concerned about were the adventurers who were placing their own lives at risk.
Hearing the reassurance from the scholar, Richard loosened up a bit.
Panda hopped over and assured him.
"Don't worry about it! As long as that long armed gibbon is here, the dwarves at large should be fine." He said carelessly, causing their captain to glare at him.
"I'm not a gibbon!" he refuted sternly, but Panda merely snorted. "That's what a gibbon in disguise would say!" His refutation caused a bunch of dwarves to laugh and blatantly point and heartily laugh some more at their frustrated captain.
Even Richard couldn't help but chuckle as he watched the "gibbon" argue with the squirrel.
The squabbling caused the tension from the battle to disperse as people rested.
For now, the first wave had ended.
