Make France Great Again

Chapter 491: Fate Showdown?

As for Canrobel's conjecture that "the Russian Empire will voluntarily withdraw after the Allied Forces attack the Sevastopol Fortress," Omar Pasha himself really cannot agree.

If he were commanding the Anglo-French Alliance Army, he would definitely order the Allied Command to join forces with the defenders of the Silistra Fortress and advance northwards, driving the Russian Imperial Army out of the Danube Duchy. (At this time, Omar Pasha did not know that the Danube Duchy had long been used by the Sultan's Court and the French Empire. As a bargaining chip to tempt the Austrian Empire into sending troops.)

Unfortunately, Omar Pasha himself was not a decision-maker at the Allied Command, nor could he influence the decisions of the Allied Command.

In terms of the Allied Command, Omar Pasha was merely an obeyer of orders, and the only people who could truly issue orders were Marshal Saint Arno and Commander Lagren.

At present, Major General Canrobel had already informed him about the next location for the Allied Command's actions. Even though Omar Pasha was filled with reluctance, he could only bow his head and obey the orders of the Allied Command.

"What do you need me to do?" Omar Pasha asked Canrobel.

Canrobel told Omar Pasha that he hoped Omar Pasha could draw a part of the troops from the Silistra Fortress to cooperate with the Allied Forces in the Sevastopol Fortress operation.

Facing Canrobel's request, Omar Pasha was inwardly reluctant because the Silistra Fortress had just undergone a fierce battle, and now having to proceed to the Sevastopol Fortress for another battle was truly asking too much. However, he personally could not defy the orders of the Allied Command.

After contemplating for a moment, Omar Pasha raised two fingers and asked Canrobel, "How about twenty thousand?"

"Twenty thousand?" Canrobel murmured, repeating the number. This was somewhat inconsistent with Marshal Saint Arno's expectations.

According to Marshal Saint Arno's thoughts, the Turkish Army in the Silistra Fortress should all set out for the Sevastopol Fortress.

"Exactly!" Omar Pasha replied to Canrobel. "Currently, there are less than 40,000 soldiers left in this fortress! After giving you 20,000, there would only be more than 10,000 left in this fortress. To firmly hold this fortress, at least 10,000 are needed. You can't expect me to ignore the Russian Empire on the other side of the Danube and throw everything the Ottoman Empire has on the Eastern Front into the siege of the Sevastopol Fortress, can you!"

"20,000 is fine too!" Major General Canrobel nodded and replied to Omar Pasha.

"When do you intend to move to Sevastopol? I need to let our troops prepare!" Omar Pasha then inquired.

"Maybe soon, or it might be months later... In any case, attacking the Sevastopol Fortress is an unchanged plan of the Allies!" Major General Canrobel said vaguely.

Currently, the Russian Empire is still on the northern bank of the Danube River, making it difficult for the Allied Command to decisively deploy large-scale forces against the Sevastopol Fortress.

Since the French Army landed in Varna, the originally formulated plans had started to be constantly revised.

Take supporting the Silistra Fortress, for example. In the previous plan of the General Staff Department, there was no plan for Canrobel's troops to support the Silistra Fortress.

However, due to the urgent situation at the Silistra Fortress and the French Government needing a significant victory, Major General Canrobel was ordered to come and support the Silistra Fortress.

There has never been a plan in the world that remains unchanged. The Tsar and his advisers would not act like puppets on a string either.

The Allied Command can only occasionally adjust the original plan to ensure everything remains under their control.

If things go smoothly, the plan to attack the Sevastopol Fortress will naturally progress.

If things do not go well, the Allied Command will likely postpone the action.

All of this relies on Marshal Saint Arno in Varna to decide. Far away from the Allied Command, Canrobel only needs to follow orders.

"I understand!" Omar Pasha nodded and said to Canrobel.

After finalizing the deployment, Omar Pasha inquired with Major General Canrobel if the French Army would be willing to join them in celebrating the victory.

"That would depend on their preferences!" Major General Canrobel subtly agreed to Omar Pasha's invitation.

After all, considering that soldiers of both countries would be training side by side in the near future, strengthening the bonds between them would aid in the upcoming battles.

However, Major General Canrobel also subtly hoped that both parties would drink as little as possible, as it was not yet time to celebrate their victory over the Russian Empire.

Canrobel's self-disciplined conduct earned Omar Pasha's appreciation. Subsequently, Omar Pasha expressed his wish to personally meet and thank the members of the Allied Forces who came to support them.

Canrobel informed Omar Pasha that the members of the Allied Forces were now stationed at the Tabia Fortress.

"What are we waiting for! Let's go!" Omar Pasha stood up and urged Major General Canrobel.

Omar Pasha and Major General Canrobert rode up to the Tabia Fortress, where the allied forces still stood in line, following Major General Canrobert's orders.

Looking at the Zuav Corps and the Scottish Rifle Corps before him, whose spirits and demeanor were completely different from that of the Turkish Army, Omar Pasha immediately felt the disparity between the two sides.

Omar Pasha dared to say that even if he led a brigade to attack these two regiments, he would inevitably fail.

"Truly a formidable army of Europe!" Omar Pasha clapped his hands in praise.

"Over-praised!" Major General Canrobert modestly said, although his eyes revealed an unconcealable pride.

...

That evening, at Omar Pasha's invitation, all members of the allied forces attended the celebration banquet organized by Omar Pasha.

Under Omar Pasha's orders, the garrison forces of the Silistra Fortress and the three forts brought out all the remaining wine and food from the fortress to celebrate together.

Omar Pasha also brought out his own long-cherished wine to drink heartily with Major General Canrobert.

During the banquet, Omar Pasha introduced Colonel Rach, the great hero of the fortress defense, to Canrobert and others. In Omar's words, if it weren't for Colonel Rach, they would have already met Allah.

In response to Omar Pasha's praise, Colonel Rach humbly said that it was thanks to the Turkish soldiers fighting bravely, and that he wasn't the only one responsible for the original design of the forts; Major General Moltke, who was then far away in Prussia, deserved even more credit.

Omar Pasha also added, "I almost forgot if you hadn't mentioned it! Major General Moltke was indeed one of the designers of the fort. I also heard that Major General Moltke is now the Chief of Staff in Prussia, is that true?"

Colonel Rach nodded, with a hint of envy in his eyes, and said: "That's right! Thanks to the Regent's favor, Major General Moltke is already holding the position of Chief of Staff!"

For some reason, after hearing Moltke's name, Major General Canrobert felt as though he had heard it somewhere before, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't recall where exactly he'd heard it.

"General Canrobert, what's wrong?"

Omar Pasha's voice reached Canrobert's ears, and Major General Canrobert immediately relaxed his brow, candidly responding to Omar Pasha: "It's nothing! I just felt that the name Colonel Rach mentioned sounded familiar!"

Then, he casually added: "But it could just be a common name! However, I'm very curious about what Major General Moltke accomplished here!"

"Let me tell you..." Omar Pasha eloquently recounted to Canrobert what Moltke had done during his time in the Ottoman Empire, which included improving the forts, training troops, and organizing logistics, portraying him as an all-around military figure.

"What a pity! Major General Moltke has long since returned to Prussia!" Omar Pasha said with a regretful sigh.

"Indeed, he is an indispensable talent!" Major General Canrobert nodded slightly, speaking to Colonel Rach with a half-smile: "With him, the Kingdom of Prussia will surely be able to reorganize its military and repay the humiliation it once suffered in full!"

After Canrobert said this, a strange tension spread at the banquet, prompting Colonel Rach to quickly add: "The Kingdom of Prussia is grateful for the help the French Empire once gave us! Personally, I hope that France and Prussia can continue to grow closer on the path ahead!"

"Yes! The past is just that, past. Let's look towards the future together!" Omar Pasha echoed in support, unwilling to let a good banquet be tarnished.

Looking at Colonel Rach, who refused to let Prussia suffer unjustly, Canrobert felt a surge of respect within him.

"Colonel, you are a patriot! I am also a patriot; we both love our monarch and our country!" Canrobert reached out to Colonel Rach in reconciliation.

"Indeed!" Colonel Rach took Canrobert's hand.

Once again, a harmonious atmosphere returned to the gathering.

The celebration banquet dispersed around ten in the evening, with the Turkish Army and the allied forces returning to their respective camps.

As Canrobert walked alone on the road back to camp, he continued pondering where he had heard the name Moltke before.

When Canrobert's left foot stepped into his tent, he instinctively glanced up at the sky.

In a flash of inspiration, Canrobert suddenly recalled hearing the name from the Emperor.

Back then, the Emperor was still the Governor, and he told Canrobert that the Kingdom of Prussia's defeat in the Prussia and Austria duel was merely temporary, as they had a formidable individual named Helmut Karl Bernhard von Moltke.

"Things have become interesting now!"
