154. A [Prayer] in the Dark (Book 2 Epilogue + Ethan Hawke character sheet)


Lucent, Castle Lysandus Greycloak Barracks

As the rest of the Greycloak knights boarded the Lucent Fleet at the city's port, young Jonah sequestered himself in his quarters.

He looked out the marble window at the fleet as it disappeared into the mist the Grey Mages had conjured up to take the Archon by surprise. He thought of his mentor, Sir Ranok, and felt his chest tighten.

"Stay here," he'd told him just before he departed to lead the fleet. "Lucent will need brave little warriors here to protect it in case of counterattack."

"Counterattack – bah!"

Jonah kicked his fallen sword across his room.

"He's just leaving me here to take the glory for himself. Leaving me here to waste away."

The boy's fists clenched, his teeth chattered. He'd fought tooth and claw for the chance to go with the fleet and set eyes on the Archon again. The creature who they were saying had even beaten Sir Artorious.

If anyone was watching the boy right now, they'd think he as consumed by rage. Ever since he'd come to this castle, and knelt before Carliah Argent, that's all people had thought – that he was a mad, untrained dog, who didn't deserve to wear the mantle of Krea.

But in private moments like this, the boy sometimes let his true colors through.

What chance do you have, Sir Ranok? Can you and the fleet even defeat him?

His whole body had been shaking in the hours since the mustering. He'd watched the women and children wave goodbye to their husbands and fathers, knowing – even if they didn't want to believe it – that some of them wouldn't come back from this battle.

And he wanted to share in their tears. But he couldn't.

Instead, he dropped to his knees before his bed and did something he'd never done before: he clasped his hands together, closed his eyes, and prayed.

"Kaedmon," he said. "You put me – you put everyone – on this earth for a reason. You put me here for a reason. You guided me here to warn them of the Enemy's coming. Now…are you going to let your children die?"

He asked this question and felt like a prized moron for even thinking it. Yet, equally, he found himself laughing at the sheer despair his voice betrayed.

"Did you put us all here just to die? My dad? Sir Artorious? Lady Carliah? Me? Are we – are we all supposed to die, is that it?"

No answer was forthcoming, and instead of yelling in anger, Jonah felt tears stain his red cheeks.

"…can't you just show us you're here?" he whispered. "Please…just show us you're still here. If this is all part of some plan you have…just – show me."

His voice died in his throat before he'd even finished the sentence. He wanted to beat himself for doubting the Lord of Argwyll. But he also wanted to cry out, even louder, in the hopes that his voice would be heard.

But that was the child in him talking. The Lord had forgotten them long, long ago.

A light crashed through the ceiling, splitting the bed apart.

Jonah's eyes flew open to see nothing but blinding, purifying rays of sunlight.

He fell back and stared, open mouthed, at the sight that was emerging in front of him. The light beacon had speared through the castle from above, centering on the spot where he'd been praying, and only now did his ears ring out with the shuddering thunder of the heavens that roared above the city.

The Viscount and his guards rushed to the boy's room at once, all of them equally baffled.

And yet even they stopped when they saw what had just appeared to the boy.

It floated down from the hole in the roof with the grace of the First Lightborn, four feathered wings wrapped round its body that suddenly spread out to reveal glimmering golden armor that shone with the might of a thousand diamonds in the dawn. Threads of pear white hair fell down from its head and spilled over its massive chest, and four arms stretched out as though welcoming all of them into its embrace.

And Jonah, who had never seen Sir Artorious ever before, looked into two of the being's four eyes and saw the resplendent blue of the Lightborn's glistening there.

And before anyone could muster the courage to say anything, the angel moved its pearl-white lips to speak:

"So shall the prayers of my children be answered with the conviction of the just, and so shall my glorious light shine down upon the righteous."

The Greycloak guard followed their Viscount's suit in bowing before their Lord, forced to close their eyes at the sheer power flowing out from the divine being's body.

All of them but Jonah, who, impossibly, managed to speak.

"By Kaedmon…"

The angel's eyes met his. And he smiled.

"Not so formal, child," he said. "We have work to do."

You summon an arc of deadly thorns, each piercing opponents with armor equivalent to {Adamantine} and dealing 100 pts of DMG.

Thorn Hail now occupies a 50ft area of your choosing, affecting all targets who move in this zone.

13. Thorn Whip (Grade B)

A wicked vine sprouts from your arm, encrusted with jagged thorns that damage your opponent. The whip can also be used to grapple objects.

DMG: 150pts

Status unlocked: Cat o'thorn tails

Three Thorn Whips are now summoned at once, each dealing separate DMG.

14. Mimic (Grade D)

You assume the form of another sentient being for the duration of this ability.

Your HP is set to 0. Any hostile action instantly dispels the illusion.

You concentrate to form an illusory entity from you or your target's mind. The target becomes convinced the illusion is real, although more perceptive creatures can see through the deception (PERS: 50+)

20. Summon Mana Veil (Grade E)

You create a dense layer of fog 50 ft wide. Any targets within this fog must pass an Intelligence check (INT: 30+) or be {Silenced} for the duration they remain within the fog.

{Silenced} targets cannot cast spells.

21. Petrification Coating (Grade D)

You slather your weapon in the debilitating bile closest to your heart, giving your weapon the [PETRI] attribute for 10 secs.

[PETRI] Chance: 40%

Petrification automatically triggered against targets with the [Sluggish] debuff.

22. Poison Coating (Grade E)

You slather your weapon in the virulent poison composed from your own blood, taking –20 HP DMG instantly in exchange for giving your weapon the [POIS] attribute.

[POIS] type: Pale Lord Venom.

Your oneness with nature attunes you to the very soil of the earth. You may use the tree roots of Argwyll to travel through the world.

The energies of the earth empower you, forming a protective layer of ancient bark over your skin.

25. Repulsor Shield (Grade D)

You heft your mighty shield, nullifying magical attacks completely up to a certain magnitude of DMG.

[Repulsion] trait gained: Repulsor Shield now reflects any magical attacks back at the attacker.

26. Ice Barrage (Grade B)

Summon a hail of eight ice-bolts that each deal 230 DMG and destroy surfaces of STR 60 or below.

Release a cone of winter air from your lungs, extinguishing any {PYRO} spells within melee range and freezing non-resistant enemies for 5 seconds.
