Between Books #10 - Taking Centre Stage

In addition to my role as the Executive Director of an arts organization that produces live theatre, I also enjoy acting with my local community theatre troupe. To date I have played the role of Bumble in Oliver, Mathew in Green Gables, Nicely-Nicely in Guys and Dolls, Alfred Dolittle in My Fair Lady, Oscar in the Odd Couple and Daddy Warbucks in Annie.

My love of live theatre also impacts my writing. I don't write to a predetermined plan. Instead, I place characters on the stage I have built for them (I also design and build the sets) and watch them interact with each other and their environment. At times a one does something so random that I take my hands off the keyboard and ask, "Now why did you decide to do that?" I find the most enjoyable part of writing is the task of uncovering the motivation behind the choices your characters make.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

At times, a character has walked in from the wings and has caught me surprise. They step onto the page and look at me as if to say, "I have something to say, why don't you start typing?"

It's no surprise that the first of my characters who asked for more time on stage was Tsarek. At first, he was only a diversion, an homage to the stories of my childhood, but it didn't take him more than a few pages to grab the spotlight and move to center stage for a primary roll. Even when I leave him out of the current arc, he has a way of popping back up again.
