Chapter 240: The Mysterious Sisters

Yu Sheng originally planned to take a nap after returning home, but two bowls of "Fox Stew" completely disrupted his plan — he wasn't sure if the "stew" that this Cyber Fox Deity cooked was normal food, but its "effects" were certainly powerful. He now felt as energetic as a dragon, ready to speedrun Nightfall Valley all over again.

Since he wasn't planning to nap, naturally, he decided to get some real work done.

"I need to go to the Special Service Bureau," he said as he walked into the living room, addressing the puppet sitting cross-legged on the coffee table watching a variety show, "You and Hu Li stay home and wait."

Erin finally looked up from the TV show: "Alright... Will you be back by noon?"

"Hard to say, I might not make it," Yu Sheng thought for a moment and then happened to see Hu Li coming out of the dining room, wiping her hands on her tail. He casually instructed, "If I'm not back by noon, heat up the leftovers in the fridge…"

Hu Li blinked: "Already ate them."

"...Got any 'stock' left in your tail?"

Hu Li laughed: "Still got some!"

"...Then have a bite of that for now," Yu Sheng waved his hand, "Little Red Riding Hood and the others are planning a celebratory event in the valley tonight. We'll go have a nice meal then — the Special Service Bureau will cover the cost anyway."

"Good!"

Yu Sheng took out his phone and sent a message to Baili Qing. After setting up a meeting, he took a deep breath and then opened a door that appeared out of thin air.

He stepped through the door, entering a vast and silent place.

A small, seemingly fragmented island floating in the boundless darkness.

Beyond the "floating island" was endless void, and above was a resplendent stream of light crossing the entire space. An incredible "elevator" structure extended from the island's center, disappearing into the darkness above, maintaining the same grand and mysterious atmosphere as in his memory, and as always, it was quiet.

One of the most mysterious floors in the Special Service Bureau's headquarters, the N Floor, or as Baili Qing called it — the "roof" of the Boundary Land.

A perfect place for discussions.

The surroundings were quiet. Baili Qing hadn't arrived yet, but Yu Sheng wasn't in a hurry. He took a look around the small fragmented island before heading to a "rest area" next to the elevator, pouring himself a glass of iced water, and sitting on the sofa to wait silently.

He admired the grand yet lonely scenery here, his thoughts drifting under the brilliant stream of light. Yu Sheng pondered many things.

About the future of the children in the "Fairy Tales" organization, about himself, about this incredible world, and also about... the ark named "Anka Aela," its long voyage, and the ancient memories it showed him.

Yu Sheng looked down, watching the ice cubes slowly rotate in the water, seeing tiny bubbles emerge from their surface, wobble upwards, some colliding and merging, some sticking to the glass and other ice cubes, and some silently breaking as they reached the water's surface.

After a while, he suddenly felt something, snapping out of his thoughts.

He looked up to see a pair of enormous eyes quietly watching him.

Only a pair of eyes — pale and impassive, floating in the void, beautiful yet almost devoid of any human warmth.

Yu Sheng was startled for a moment before hesitantly greeting the eyes: "Uh, hello."

He knew who they belonged to. He knew this was Baili Qing's "sister" — but it was his first time seeing her without Baili Qing present.

"Hello." A monotonous, cold voice directly echoed in Yu Sheng's mind.

"I arranged to meet your sister…" For some reason, Yu Sheng always felt a bit awkward and strange when talking to these eyes alone, his tone hesitant.

"I know," the eyes said, their tone devoid of emotion, even more mechanically cold than Baili Qing's, "She's still in a meeting. It's quite boring."

Yu Sheng realized why he felt off. It was the fact that the eyes were solely eyes — eyes are said to be windows to the soul, but "sister" here only had two windows. Talking to her felt like being constantly scanned by her gaze, and lacking other facial features for reference, he couldn't tell her "expression." It felt more like conversing with a surveillance system with true sight…

But since she was Baili Qing's sister, Yu Sheng couldn't act disrespectfully. He tried to keep a straight face and find a topic: "By the way, I've never asked, your name is…"

"Baili Xue," the eyes replied plainly, "Though I haven't used it in many years."

Yu Sheng was taken aback.

A beautiful name, and not very unusual, either.

However, his first thought was "These eyes actually have a name…"

Before he could voice that thought, the eyes seemed to read his mind and said, "Our mother gave my sister and me our names."

Yu Sheng: "…"

"Yes, I was also born from my mom."

Yu Sheng: "Uh, I didn't say anything."

"I can tell."

"Oh."

Yu Sheng scratched his head, feeling the awkwardness of his inner complaints being seen through instantly, and then more questions flooded his mind - did these eyes calling themselves "Baili Xue" not always look like "two windows" from the beginning? How did she become like this? The "state" between her and Baili Qing also seemed odd, what's going on here? She seems quite interested in me? What is she doing here? Did she come just because she found her sister's meeting boring?

Yu Sheng temporarily put these messy thoughts aside. He knew these questions couldn't be asked directly and he wasn't that interested in the purpose of these "windows" in front of him, so he lowered his head and continued sipping his ice water.

Maybe it was his overly indifferent reaction that made those eyes take the initiative to speak again after a moment of silence.

"You killed a Dark Angel?"

Yu Sheng stopped his sipping motion.

He recalled the withered, dying ecological cabin, and Anka Aela's farewell before it shut down. After a moment of silence, he gently shook his head.

"It chose 'death' itself, I was just there with it for a while at the end."

Yu Sheng felt that penetrating gaze upon him - without any malice, seemingly just pure curiosity.

"But that's still an astounding feat, do you... understand the significance of this matter? A Dark Angel 'fell', for the first time in history, the first known in the entire world," she said slowly, "word will spread quickly, countless people will be shocked by this - of course, probably no one will be foolish enough to run to the Boundary Land to confirm it with you, but in the near future, the impact will surely become apparent..."

However, the only response she got was a slightly delayed "oh" from Yu Sheng half a minute later.

Baili Xue was silent for a few seconds: "…You don't seem to care much?"

Yu Sheng looked up: "What's there to care about?"

This time Baili Xue seemed genuinely surprised, even paused for two seconds before speaking: "Uh, like disturbing your peaceful life or something. I've read such stories, where the protagonist who achieves great feats chooses to return to a normal life with a hidden identity to maintain their peaceful existence..."

Yu Sheng was finally shocked: "You even read that stuff?"

"...What else can I do besides reading all sorts of things?"

Yu Sheng: "..."

Damn, that seems about right.

"Ahem, I haven't thought that much," Yu Sheng gave a dry cough to break the awkwardness, "I mean stuff like 'peaceful life' - besides, honestly, my life hasn't been peaceful for a long time, why care so much."

"That seems true, there are... a lot of 'lively' people around you now."

"So it doesn't matter," Yu Sheng waved his hand, "let the news spread as it will. I'm actually quite interested in Dark Angels now, and if this could bait out some useful information, that would be good."

Baili Xue fell silent, and at that moment, Yu Sheng heard the soft sound of the elevator door opening not far away.

He turned his head and saw a figure with a gray ponytail step out of the elevator, looking hurried.

"Sorry, I started wrapping up the meeting as soon as I got your message, but it took a bit longer than expected," Baili Qing said quickly, then saw the eyes floating in front of Yu Sheng, and froze, "…What are you doing here? When did you sneak out?"

"When you stood up and said 'I'll just add a couple more points'."

Baili Qing: "..."

Yu Sheng: "..."

He quietly watched Baili Qing walk over and sit down opposite him, watched the large eyes disappear behind Baili Qing, and finally broke the silence after a long while: "Your sister... is actually quite interesting."

"Interesting, but also dangerous," Baili Qing raised her eyes to look at Yu Sheng, "don't stare into her eyes for too long, you can surely tell, her current state isn't exactly 'human,' she might be very friendly to you, but some inhuman, irrational stuff... even she can't control it."

Yu Sheng thought about it, admitting he didn't feel anything, but in the end, he swallowed those words back.

He figured Baili Qing was giving him a reminder based on the "ordinary people" standard, and since it was good intentions, he'd just take it to heart.

But it also made him even more curious about the secrets of this "Baili Xue" and "Baili Qing" sisters...
