Darkness enveloped Zavier as he stepped through the portal, the shimmering light disappearing as he did. He stood rigid, fists clenched at his sides and his stomach sinking. Guilt and fear wracked him.
I left them. Did I really do that? Why would I do that? What kind of father am I?
The feelings warred within him, but what was done was done. There was no going back now and if he wanted to see them again he needed to beat this challenge. With a sigh he turned around, realizing that the darkness wasn't as complete as he thought. In the middle of the room was a pedestal that was lit from above by an invisible spotlight. He approached it and saw a single piece of parchment laying on it.

The moment he finished reading a light appeared on the wall in front of him, traveling upwards in a straight line, then sideways, then down. When it completed its journey there was a glowing door on the other side of the pedestal, the only other light in the darkness.
Excitement and nervousness burned in him as he approached it. His hand shook slightly as he reached out, the door warm to his fingertips. At his touch the door swung open silently and sunlight flooded through the door as a world opened up in front of him.
As he looked out he realized that something was looking back. "Is that…?" Zavier's mouth quirked up in a dangerous smile and his chains rattled to the floor as he unwound them. His first step was tentative, his second sure, and by his third step he was running, chains whirling around him.
