Progenitor's Burden

Chapter 38: Trip to Italy

The four friends—six, including the wolves—arrived with a slight jolt, teleported outside an old, but decidedly charming, stone building. The structure looked like an old church, and Sinclair pulled up his map on his display screen to confirm it; the church was called, "Madonna delle Nevi".

Without wasting time, he sent Chewy and Leia out to scout around them, relying on their keen physical senses and unusual degree of common sense. Turning to his friends, he saw a mixture of excitement and determination in their eyes. This was no game of hide and seek; they were here on a real mission, with real stakes, and they were clearly excited.

"Alright, everyone," he said, his voice resounding with the tone of authority. "We're not exactly sure what we're up against, but we need to be prepared for anything. Chewy and Leia will give us an overview of the area, and we'll plan our approach accordingly. Stay sharp and stay together. We don't know what this Myrkr is capable of, so we need to be on our guard."

Ed, Alice, and Rose stood in silent acknowledgment, fully aware of the serious nature of their mission. While they waited for Chewy and Leia to return with their report, they took a moment to survey their surroundings. The ancient stones of the Aosta Valley vineyards bore the marks of history, each one telling a story of ages past. The air around them seemed to carry the whispers of secrets, as if the wind itself was eager to share tales of the long-forgotten past.

Chewy and Leia rapidly returned, their energetic lope carrying them straight to Sinclair. Through their bond they conveyed a sense of urgency: they had discovered a scent trail; one that felt familiar.

Acknowledging their report with a swift nod, Sinclair turned to face his friends. "Okay, here's the plan. Chewy and Leia have picked up a trail. My role will be to intercept any threats and initiate the attacks. Once I've engaged, I'll position the enemy so you can strike from behind. Remember to stay alert and coordinate your actions. Precision and unity are going to be key in this."

Ed, Alice, and Rose took their positions, weapons at the ready, minds focused. Sinclair's leadership inspired confidence, but they knew that this battle would test their skills and collaboration as a team. They had trained together, grown together, and now it was time to prove their skill.

As Chewy and Leia led the way, the scenery of the Aosta Valley Vineyards began to unfold around them, a beautiful but now menacing landscape, tainted as it was by the unseen threat. The wind whispered through the vine leaves, and the distant mountains watched over them like ancient guardians. It was a picturesque setting, but the sense of danger was palpable, trepidation preventing the team from enjoying the beauty.

They set out down the trail, Sinclair at the lead, eyes scanning and senses alert, following the path of destruction left by the unseen monster. Broken branches and upturned earth marked its passage, and the unsettling sight of small, lifeless animal bodies littered the way. Whatever was ahead of them was not only powerful but voracious, leaving behind copious evidence of an apparently insatiable hunger.

As they made their way through the forest, the tension among the group grew. The land was quiet—too quiet—the only sound was their footsteps, the occasional rustle of leaves, and Ed, muttering about it being too quiet. Then, suddenly, a deer burst out of a particularly dark patch of undergrowth, startling them all.

Hearts pounding, they watched as the terrified animal bounded away, its flight a reminder of the danger they were in. Sinclair felt a chill run down his spine and made a quick decision. "Chewy, Leia, move to the front," he mentally instructed his faithful companions. "Space out and scout ahead. Be silent. Do not engage. Report back what you find, but remain unseen."

His two animal companions acknowledged his command and swiftly took up their new positions. Their senses were keen, and they moved with a stealthy grace, their eyes and noses alert for any sign of the monster.

The group continued on, increasingly cautious. Every shadow seemed to hide a potential threat, and every noise was a cause for alarm. The anticipation for the inevitable confrontation was palpable, and they readied themselves for what lay ahead, trusting in their training, their teamwork, and their leader. The trail was growing darker, the air heavier, and the sense of foreboding more profound. Something was waiting for them.

As they continued moving, the trail seemed to gain a life of its own, behaving increasingly strange and inconsistent. It led them through stretches of devastated forest, then abruptly into areas that were untouched. Whenever Sinclair thought they had lost the trail, Chewy or Leia would discover it again, inexplicably shifted a hundred yards deeper into the woods. It was as if the trail—or the monster—was playing games with them, leading them on a winding path, deliberately trying to confuse them. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, that there was more to this creature than just brute force and hunger.

Finally, they spotted the monster just over the next hill, descending towards a camping grotto. Thankfully, the area appeared to be empty, but the sight of the creature sent a chill through Sinclair's veins. The monster was… bizarre. It looked like a giant toad, albeit one that was a good 18-23 feet long and as tall as a bus. It had the ears of a rabbit, the skin of a bat, and strange divots where it was missing chunks of skin entirely. It was like a psychopath's version of a Mr Potato Head.

Name: Mutated Chimera

Description: The Myrkr Spawn, a grotesque chimera, takes the form of a monstrous toad. Its unsettling appearance is accentuated by oversized rabbit ears, leathery bat-like skin, and strange divots where chunks of flesh seem to be missing. Absorbing light with its mottled hide, the creature exudes an ominous presence. Despite its bulk, it moves with surprising agility, making its venomous bite and razor-sharp claws all the more dangerous.

Without hesitation, he initiated a Focused Charge, his body surging forward with supernatural speed, ready to strike at the monster. But as he closed the distance, the creature emitted a deafening noise, a sound that seemed to resonate in the very core of his being, and then it simply vanished.

Sinclair skidded to a halt, his eyes wide, his mind racing. The monster was gone, as if it had never been there. The noise still rang in his ears, a sound that was both a warning and a challenge. It was clear that this was no ordinary beast, but something far more dangerous, something that could not be taken lightly.

Sinclair quickly regathered his friends, his gaze fixed on the area where the monster had vanished. "Ed, I am going to need you to use that root skill pretty accurately." he asked urgently, his mind working rapidly to formulate a strategy.

Ed, momentarily dazed, was jolted into action by Sinclair's question. "OK, what are you thinking? It can hold a target in place for a bit, but I am not sure if it'll have any effect on something that big." he answered.

"Well, do your best," Sinclair acknowledged, plotting their next move. "We can't let it vanish again. We must control this fight. Alice, Rose, ready your most powerful attacks. Once Ed has it locked down, we strike with everything we've got. We may have only a fraction of a moment to strike before it breaks free."

The group nodded in unison. With a common resolve, they advanced, prepared for whatever lay ahead. Chewy and Leia matched their pace, alert and loyal as ever.

Sinclair received a mental update from Chewy and Leia. They had pinpointed the creature's location further down the valley, moving towards a populated area that lay illuminated in the distance. They closed as quickly as they could, spreading out in a slow and deliberate pattern. The beast didn't seem to notice them, its attention fixed on its goal, but this left them with an opportunity ripe for swift action.

Ed, his brow furrowed with concentration, stood up and extended his arms. With a surge of magical energy, he cast his spell, summoning large, forceful vines from the ground. The vines whipped through the air, surrounding the monster, coiling and attempting to crush it down. The monster's sudden cry of surprise and frustration resonated in the night.

Without hesitation, Sinclair used his speed and strength to close the distance, his large axe at the ready. With a determined swing, he executed a Cleave; the blade cutting deep into the monster's flesh. The monster roared in pain, thrashing against the vines that held it.

Alice and Rose, following Sinclair's lead, readied their attacks as well in seamless coordination, each one taking up the best tactical position to maximise coverage. At the same time, Chewy and Leia watched from further away, where they could view the entire battlefield and warn if reinforcements or other dangers entered the fray.

The initial surprise attack had been successful, but they all knew that the monster was far from defeated. Its strength and ferocity were apparent, even as it struggled against Ed's constraining spell. The battle intensified as each member of the group engaged with the monster, their attacks synchronized. All were aware that at some point the cooldown on the beast's teleportation would expire, and they suspected that the vines would be useless to prevent its activation.

Ed, beads of sweat on his brow, continued to channel his root spell. As the monster broke free from some of the vines, new ones would emerge from the ground, wrapping around its limbs and seeking to restrain it once again. His focus was unwavering, his magical control precise, as he worked to keep the creature pinned, despite the increasing mental strain he found himself under.

Rose, her eyes ablaze with determination, summoned her water jet. A powerful stream of water burst forth from her hands, striking the monster with unrelenting force. The water jet's impact was like a battering ram, hitting the monster's side and further hindering its attempts to escape Ed's magical snare.

Alice used her flash ability to dart in and out of the monster's reach. Her attacks were targeted at the creature's back legs, her strikes aimed to disable and weaken it. Her movements were a dance, her weapons a blur, as she executed her well-timed attacks.

Sinclair, ever the tactician, looped back around for a frontal assault. His face was etched with fierce resolve as he charged headlong at the monster, his axe raised high. The force of his attack was devastating, each swing aimed to strike a critical blow.

The monster, although ferocious and powerful, was beginning to show signs of wear. Its roars of defiance turned to growls of frustration as it fought against the coordinated assault of Sinclair and his friends. Even so, it was far from defeated, its eyes still gleaming.

Each member of the group was keenly aware that one wrong move could shift the tide of the battle. The monster was cunning, and its next move could be unpredictable. But they were well prepared, their skills finely honed, their teamwork as flawless as diamond.

Unwilling to go down without one last effort, the creature's body was engulfed in a brilliant white light as it strained to break free from its bonds. With a strange, otherworldly noise echoing from its form, it emitted a powerful wave that temporarily stunned Sinclair and his team, allowing it to once again transport itself away from danger.

Almost immediately, the feeling of debilitation began to wane, and Sinclair, always quick to react, cast Visage of the Wolf. His body tingled as the spell enhanced his strength and agility, preparing him for the impending continuation of battle. Mentally, he connected with Chewy and Leia, his voice urgent as he instructed them to follow the creature. But before he could finish, the sounds of combat reached his ears, rising from beyond the hill.

With a shared glance, the team gathered back up, urgency driving them forward. Their muscles ached, and their breaths came out in ragged gasps as they raced over the hill. They were closing in on civilization, and the danger was escalating. Just beyond a small rise lay the back of a row of houses, their windows glowing softly in the night, oblivious to the battle unfolding just beyond their doors.

The stark realization that they were all that stood between the creature and innocent lives lent wings to their feet. They moved as one, their faces set, their hearts pounding. The final confrontation was at hand, and they knew that they could not—would not—fail.

Sinclair's grip tightened on his weapon as they crested the hill, the sounds of battle growing louder, the stakes higher than ever. Every fiber of his being was focused on the task ahead, his mind clear, his resolve unwavering.

The sight of Chewy and Leia engaging the creature spurred them on. The loyal companions had managed to slow the horrific monster down, and their relentless blows were buying precious time for the rest of the group to catch up.

Ed was the first to act, his root spell activating once more as vines shot from the ground to entwine the monster. Sinclair followed, his voice echoing through the night as he cast Wild Shout, drawing the creature's attention fully onto him. The monster's eyes locked onto Sinclair's.

Alice and Rose, their earlier tactics fresh in their minds, moved into position, ready to continue their coordinated assault.

The final confrontation had begun.

Sinclair charged, his heart pounding in his chest, the Visage of the Wolf still lending him speed and power. With a fierce battle cry, he swung his large axe at the creature, but the beast was surprisingly agile and dodged his blow, leaving Sinclair to slice through air.

Alice, her face etched with determination, flashed in and out of the shadows, attacking the monster's hind legs, her metal-encased feet and hands seeking to cripple it. Her swift movements formed some kind of dance, precise and deadly.

Rose, meanwhile, summoned her water jet spell once more; a stream of water with the force of a torrent aimed at the creature's eyes to blind and disorient it. The water struck true, and the creature howled in pain and anger.

The battle raged on, neither side giving an inch. Sinclair and the creature exchanged blows, each landing hits, the sound of clashing metal and the monster's hideous cries filling the air. The creature's strength seemed unending, its form shifting and morphing, defying all attempts to pin it down.

The team worked together seamlessly, their attacks coordinated, each member playing their part. But the creature was relentless, its power failing to decline, its tactics evolving. It began to anticipate their moves, dodging and retaliating with even greater ferocity.

A sudden, deafening screech erupted from the creature, stunning the team momentarily, giving it an opening to charge at Sinclair. He barely managed to block its attack with his axe, the force of the blow sending him stumbling back.

Time seemed to slow as the realization hit them all that the creature was adapting too quickly. They needed to change their strategy, to find a weakness, something that would give them the upper hand.

In a moment of inspiration, Sinclair ordered Ed to alter his root spell to ensnare the creature's mouth, silencing its sonic attack. As the vines wrapped around the creature's head, Sinclair saw his opportunity and charged, his axe raised high.

Aiming for a soft spot on the side of the throat he had noticed earlier, Sinclair charged up Cleave and also cast Focused Charge at the same time. He swung with all his might. The strike was true, and the creature reeled, its body convulsing, blood—or ichor—spurting from the wound. The creature made a few last attempts at taking drunken swings before it collapsed and fell still.

Silence descended, broken only by the sound of their heavy breathing. They had won, but the battle had taken its toll. Sinclair looted the monster as fast as he could, ordering the others to do the same. Logging onto the Market, he once again purchased an accelerant and liberally doused the creature. Then, having actually remembered to bring a lighter this time, he set the monster alight, forming a quasi-funeral pyre.

In the distance, the faint sound of sirens began to reach their ears. As one, they turned and fled back the way they came, ensuring they wouldn't be seen.

Not stopping until they were a couple of hills away, the group collapsed to the group, forming a rough circle. As they lay there, they looked up at the stars, the twinkling lights a stark contrast to the intensity of their recent battle.

"Well, that was fun. Kinda." Ed said from his prone position, his voice filled with both excitement and disbelief. "And you've been doing this by yourself? I have a hard time not thinking you're a bit crazy, Sinclair. Actually, scratch that. I'm certain you're crazy."

Alice looked over at them, her eyes wide with a mix of excitement and concern. "Is it always that hard?" she asked Sinclair.

"It's actually usually much worse," Sinclair stated calmly, his voice betraying no hint of the exertion they had all just been through. "At least, when I've been alone it has been. I've had to face more than one at a time, and protect people who have been hurt. Sometimes our very survival will be on the line and we'll not even have the chance to back away and regroup. Honestly, this was easy, except for the teleportation. This one was kind of easy with so many people."

They all just stared at him, their expressions a mix of disbelief and horror, as if he had just described a hurricane as nothing more than a soft rain.

Shaking his head, Sinclair stood up, the remnants of the battle still ringing in his ears. "Anyway, we need to get back and let my parents know we're alright."

Everyone gathered around him, their faces still flushed with the thrill of victory. With a sense of purpose, Sinclair opened the quest menu and selected the "complete" option. In a flash, they were all teleported back to the safety of the farm, leaving behind the echoes of a night they would never forget.
