1.51. Puppet and Predator

James leapt back as the ground erupted around him. Luna rushed forward, dodging between the spears of stone while dropping onto all fours. Her sudden shift to her wolf form took Jing off balance as he quickly threw out his arm to liquify the ground to slow her.

Soul energy coated her feet, preventing her from sinking into the pool as James recovered and cut down the stone spears before him. Frowning, he activated his Soul Puppet skill for the first time. A tearing sensation ripped through his soul as his body split, leaving behind a flaming white visage of a man. The apparition summoned a sword and rushed towards the cultivator.

James ran to the side, circling around the area. Bo was pulling himself off the stone spear while Tim struggled to gain ground against his. Both elders were severely injured and out of the fight as James cut down the spear holding Tim.

His puppet reached Jing at the same time Luna did. Slashing its sword through the cultivator, they watched as Jing broke into stone, his clone falling apart as the ground shook.

Luna jumped into the air, changing into her Soul Form as the ground collapsed, creating a sink hole deep enough that light couldn't reach.

"Stay still!" Jing yelled.

James pushed out with his Soul Senses and found the cultivator underground. Snapping his fingers, James called Luna's attention and pointed out the hidden man.

Nodding, Luna slammed her paw into the ground, creating a crack that struck the cultivator and made him scream. James's Soul Puppet dropped into the pitfall and bled through the stone to reach Jing.

James used the attacks to Siphon the weakened man, ripping part of his soul out of his body. The silver sheen to the nascent soul cultivator cracked as the flames were pulled into James, making him stronger.

Luna used her claws to tear apart the ground as Jing tried moving away. The Fenrir followed the trail of flames to the cultivators new hiding spot and howled. The air grew heavy as a tornado started to form. The clouds crashed down from the sky, ripping apart the earth like a drill.

Eyes wide, James rushed to Luna's side, but didn't stop her attack as his Soul Puppet moved through the ground. A second later, his puppet grabbed Jing by his back, holding him in place as it Siphoned his soul.

Luna's drill reached him a second later, pulling him from the ground. Dropping him in front of her, she growled and lunged forward. Her teeth sank into the man's body, punching holes into his soul.

"Kill him," James ordered.

Picking him up, Luna started to shake her head. Slamming the man into the ground over and over, they watched blood spray through the air as her razor sharp teeth chewed on the man and shredded his body and soul.

"Keep him alive," Bo called out.

James glanced at the elder and shook his head.

Luna growled and threw the elder into the air before opening her mouth and letting Jing fall fully into her maw. Biting down, she finished crushing him before chewing a few times and spitting him out. His soul finished bleeding out, staining the ground with blood and energy.

Changing out of her Soul Form, she stalked up to the corpse and started eating. Ripping off his arm, she shattered bone and ripped flesh as she swallowed sections whole.

Dismissing his Soul Puppet, James felt a large amount of energy flow into him as he turned back to the city. An explosion rocked the city once again, and more buildings collapsed.

"Leave him," he snapped. "Our friends need us."

Luna dropped Jing's leg before turning to the city. Nodding, she started running. James followed a second later, jumping over the destroyed wall.

Amber downed a healing potion as her severed arm regrew at a prodigious rate. Her blood coated the wall behind her as the shredded body of a water cultivator was spread before her.

Glancing down at her severed arm, she nudged it with her toe. James owes me severely after this.

Tutting, she listened to the cultivators rush around the slums. They were still searching for her as she slipped away. She still had eight men left and only six bombs. She had to pray that James would reach her soon. The cultivators had learned not to group up and were not afraid to destroy everything around them if it meant hurting her.

With controlled breaths, she climbed to the top of a building and found another water cultivator across from her. Wincing, she quickly jumped back down as a blade of water sliced through the air where she just stood.

Rolling across the ground, she pulled her new cloak around herself and disappeared from view. The enchantment didn't have much time left, so she quickly rushed towards the cultivator and watched him run through the streets towards her building.

Passing one another, she slipped an armed bomb into his pocket before quickly taking cover in another structure. The old shop protected her from the explosion as yet another cultivator died.

The cloak around her disintegrated and she pulled out a silver orb that seemed to draw in all of the light of the day. Suddenly, three copies of herself appeared and rushed off, drawing the attention away from her.

That won't last long. Where are you James?

A howl in the distance made her shiver as she felt power flood the slums. Luna was on her way, and it sounded like she was pissed.

James followed Luna into the city. Her wolf form leapt over walls and onto buildings as she sniffed the air, leading him into the slums. When they came across a severed arm, she growled and nudged it with her nose.

Kneeling by the arm, James noticed the claws and the dead cultivator in blue robes. "Who does this belong to?"

Luna transformed back into her human form. "Amber. The cat is still alive."

"What is she doing here?"

Shaking her head, Luna sniffed the air while he spread out his Soul Senses. Several angry pings reached him. Six of them to be precise, with two of them facing off against one another. One was clearly Amber and she was racing through the streets, fleeing the other.

Luna raced off, heading towards the cat as quickly as she could. James blurred past her, arriving in a fraction of a second behind a blue robed cultivator that was building a blade of water in his hands.

Summoning his sword, James cut through the man, severing him at the waist as Amber limped into view.

"James!" she cheered.

Luna arrived a second later. "What the hell, Amber?"

Hurrying over to them, Amber grabbed his arm. "There's still more of them."

Touching her fingers, he frowned. "Where are the others?"

"I got them to safety first," Amber explained. "I don't think they have any more reinforcements left."

Nodding, James turned to Luna. "Kill the other four."

"And leave you with the cat?"

Glancing at Amber, he felt her fingers caressing his arm. "She won't cause any trouble."

"I won't," Amber said with a smile. "I'm out of energy anyway."

Nodding, Luna dropped into her wolf form and raced off. A moment later, someone was screaming before the sound of their gurgling cry was cut off.

"How long have you been fighting?" James asked.

Amber led him over to a wall and sat down. "Since you started fighting the giant. I gathered the others first and led them to a safe room. After that was war."

"Thank you for helping them," James said earnestly. "You could have saved yourself instead, and you didn't."

"And let you down?" With a chuckle, she added, "I wanted to see your expression when I won."

"How about I buy you a drink." Smiling, he rested his hand on her shoulder. "You did good, Amber. I'm definitely keeping you with me."

"That's all I want," she whispered. "To be by your side."

The last soul flickered out as Luna headed back towards them. Her snowy white hair appeared around the corner of a building as she walked over confidently.

"I see she's moving in on my husband."

"Never!" Amber quickly said. "I just want to help."

Nodding, Luna sat down and leaned against James. "I'm beat. We have a lot to talk about."

"But first, we secure the others," James said. "I don't feel any more cultivators nearby. We should be safe to get them out of the city."

"Follow me." Amber shakily got back to her feet. Luna quickly moved to brace the cat, pulling Amber's arm over her shoulder. "You need to rest, kitten."

"Please don't call me that," Amber muttered.

"Sorry, kitty cat."

"That's worse…"

Chuckling, James followed in the rear. Both of their tails were swaying with happiness as they moved through the streets. After a few minutes, Amber stopped them outside a worn building and stepped inside.

"I have to give them the signal," she said before grabbing a pipe that ran underground. "Bronson, bring them out. The kingdom is safe."

"Kingdom?" Luna asked.

A distorted voice came from the pipe a second later. "Understood, My Queen."

Frowning, James didn't say anything as nearly a minute passed before a hatch was opened and three oni stepped out. The large man in the front regarded James for a moment before turning to Amber and bowing.

"Shall I lead the way, My Queen?" Bronson asked.

"No," Amber said. "I no longer go by that title as of this moment. James will lead us to safety."

Linda, Mender, and Jamie stepped out last and Jamie rushed to James. "Are you hurt?"

Chuckling, James opened his arms to hug his sister. "I'm fine, Jamie. I heal faster than anyone here."

Mender moved to Amber and touched her with a glowing hand. "You took a potion recently. Your arm feels new."

"It is," Amber said weakly.

Letting Jamie go, James walked over to Amber and picked her up. "Let's go. We have a stop to make."

"Let me down!" Amber yelped.

Ignoring her protest, James turned to Luna. "Take us back to the giant."

Nodding, Luna sniffed the air a few times before starting off at a slow jog. Bronson picked up Linda and followed as best he could. Mender and Jamie had it easier as they passed corpses littering the streets.

They reached the giant half an hour later, having crossed miles of the city and fields. James was surprised to find Elder Bo and Tim were still there, letting their wounds heal.

"Did any survive?" Bo asked as James came to a stop.

"No. You lost a lot of cultivators, but it would seem some water cultivators were also present." James set Amber down and crossed his arms.

Bo tutted. "I see. I'll need to heal for a few days before we scour our sect for more traitors. I'll be heading to Running River Sect to exact revenge within the week."

Tim scoffed. "Jing thought he could take over. I'm looking forward to purging his followers."

Taking a deep breath, James touched Amber's back and guided her over to the giant. Her eyes were huge as she looked over the several story sized corpse.

"Are we skinning it?" Linda asked as Bronson set her down.

"No," James said. "I'm going to convert each of you and you're going to eat the giant. We're doing this one at a time, so be ready."

Bo walked over. "Will you be able to protect the area?"

"Yes," James said confidently. "After everyone that wants my gift is converted, I have some things to explain. Our future goals just grew in scope. It would seem our ancestors hid a lot from us about the so-called Great War. We also need to find a way to save the planet."
