Lilith's whip coiled tightly in her hand as she scanned the area. "Tell me that's just the mountain settling."
"It's not," Eris said grimly, her emerald eyes darting toward the shadows. "Something's coming."
From the fissures in the ground, a dark, viscous substance began to ooze, spreading like ink across the rocky terrain. The air grew colder, and an oppressive energy settled over the group.
Adrian tightened his grip on his sword, his fiery chains reigniting with a fierce glow. "Everyone, get ready."
The goddesses formed a loose circle around him, their banter forgotten as they prepared for whatever was emerging from the darkness. The shadows coalesced, taking shape into something massive and menacing.
And then, with a deafening roar, it rose—a monstrous, multi-limbed creature with glowing red eyes and a body that seemed to shift and writhe like living darkness.
"Guess training's over," Adrian said steadily despite the fear clawing at his chest.
Hera stepped forward, maintaining her regal presence without faltering. "This is no ordinary threat," she said. "Whatever it is, it's not here by chance."
The creature lunged, and the battle began anew, fiercer and more desperate than before.
Adrian felt his instincts take over when the huge creature charged at them, its large, dark limbs reaching out like long arms. He swung his fiery chains upward, intercepting one of the appendages mid-strike.
The chain hissed as it burned through the darkness, but the creature pulled back, reforming the severed limb as though it had lost nothing.
"Not ordinary is an understatement!" Adrian shouted, bracing himself for another strike.
Medea's black flames roared to life beside him. "It's some kind of shadow construct," she said, her eyes narrowing as she hurled a blazing orb at the beast.
The fire hit its mark, causing the creature to stagger back momentarily, but the flames were quickly absorbed into the writhing mass.
"Great," Eris muttered, flipping her emerald daggers in her hands. "It eats magic. That's just what we need."
Ava stepped forward, slamming her golden staff into the ground. The light it emitted seemed to slow the creature's movements, creating a shimmering barrier that gave them a momentary reprieve.
"Not all magic," she said through gritted teeth. "We need to keep it contained. Lilith, Abyss, flank it!"
They quickly jumped into action, with Lilith's whip slicing through the air while Abyss moved with sharp accuracy. The creature attacked them with multiple limbs, but they moved out of the way in perfect harmony.
Lilith's whip wrapped around one of the limbs while Abyss plunged her blade into its center.
For a moment, the creature faltered, its red eyes flickering.
"Now, Adrian!" Ava called, maintaining the golden barrier. "Go for the core!"
Adrian didn't hesitate.
He channeled the power of his fiery chains, the glowing links burning brighter as he lunged forward. His sword ignited with golden flames, the mark of the goddesses' powers combining within him.
He aimed for the creature's chest, where the red light of its core pulsated faintly.
But before his blade could connect, the creature let out an ear-splitting roar, sending a shockwave through the ground. Adrian was thrown backward, skidding across the rocky terrain as the others were forced to retreat.
"Damn it!" Adrian growled, pushing himself up.
The creature began to shift again, its form twisting and growing.
Two massive wings unfurled from its back, their edges jagged and dripping with shadow. It rose higher, looming over the group with an almost sentient malice.
"That's new," Lilith said, her voice unusually serious as she moved back to Adrian's side.
"Any bright ideas?" Adrian asked, his grip tightening on his sword.
Hera stepped forward. "It's not invincible," she said, her blue eyes scanning the creature with calculated precision. "The core—it's vulnerable, but only if we strike together."
"Together?" Eris scoffed, though she was already stepping into position. "What are we, a team now?"
"Think of it as survival," Abyss said, her violet eyes never leaving the creature. "If we don't act as one, we're toast."
"Fine," Medea snapped, her flames reigniting. "But I'm not holding back."
Adrian nodded, his determination rekindled. "Alright, you heard Hera. We hit the core, all at once."
The group moved as a unit, their previous banter and differences forgotten in the face of the overwhelming threat.
Ava's golden staff radiated a protective aura, shielding them from the creature's relentless attacks as they advanced. Lilith and Abyss coordinated their strikes, keeping the beast's limbs occupied while Adrian, Hera, and Medea prepared for a final assault.
"Now!" Hera commanded, her voice cutting through the chaos.
Adrian's fiery chains lashed out, wrapping around the creature's wings and holding it in place. Hera summoned a brilliant golden spear, hurling it with unerring precision at the core.
Medea's black flames followed close behind, merging with the spear in a dazzling explosion of light and shadow.
The creature let out a deafening roar as the combined attack struck its core. Its red eyes flickered violently, and for a moment, it seemed to falter.
But then, the unthinkable happened.
The shattered pieces of its core began to reform, the shadows knitting themselves back together. The creature's roar turned into a low, ominous laugh that echoed through the mountains.
"What the hell?" Adrian shouted, his chains recoiling as the creature grew stronger before their eyes.
"It's regenerating," Selene said softly, stepping forward for the first time. Her silver eyes were wide with horror. "That's… that's not supposed to happen."
Hestia, still lounging nearby, finally stood, her marine-blue eyes narrowing as she surveyed the scene. "I was hoping to avoid this," she muttered, stretching her arms. "Guess nap time's over."
Before anyone could respond, the ground beneath them began to quake violently.
Cracks spread across the terrain, and the creature let out another chilling roar, its form swelling as though drawing strength from the very earth itself.
Adrian's heart sank as he realized the battle wasn't just far from over—it was escalating into something far worse. "Everyone, fall back!" he yelled, his voice piercing through the growing noise.
But the creature lunged before they could retreat, its shadowy limbs crashing down like a tidal wave. Adrian barely managed to raise his chains in defense, the fiery links straining under the immense pressure.
"We need a plan!" Abyss called, her sword slicing through one of the limbs only for it to reform instantly.
"I'm open to suggestions!" Adrian shouted back.
Hera's gaze was fixed on the creature, her blue eyes blazing. "We're not retreating," she said firmly, summoning another golden spear. "Not now."
Adrian looked at her, his expression a mix of frustration and resolve. "Then what do you suggest?"
Hera smiled slyly, her confidence intact even in the tough situation. "We end this. Together."
The creature roared again, its form expanding as the darkness around it deepened. The goddesses exchanged glances, their resolve hardening as they prepared for one final stand.
Adrian tightened his grip on his sword, his fiery chains flaring to life once more. "Alright," he instructed. "Let's finish this."
And with that, they charged.
