Grand Voyage: I Start My Journey With A Ghost Ship!

chapter 155

The island was a perfect, regular circle. Its edges were smooth, and its interior was sparsely dotted with white, leafless bushes, only about a meter high.Yang Yi picked a random spot to approach, since the whole island looked the same. He turned the ship broadside, aimed the Waterlogged Cannon at the shore, and fired two shots. One was a standard cannonball, which blasted a crater in the salt-crusted coast. The hole revealed that the island's surface was covered in a layer of salt frost about a °• N 𝑜 v 𝑒 l i g h t •° dozen centimeters thick, with loose, dark-brown soil underneath. The island wasn't made entirely of salt, just coated in a very thick layer of it.The other shot was special; it fired a Human-Head Octopus, which splattered against the coast and turned into a puddle of goo.Yang Yi didn't fire again. Instead, he scanned the island with his Third Eye, waiting to see if the commotion would stir anything up.But nothing happened. He switched back to his naked eye, observing for a few more minutes with the telescope, and still found nothing unusual. From the looks of it, the island was devoid of any moving creatures—a land of absolute silence. He fired two more shots, this time aiming for the white bushes on the island. Both were solid cannonballs, carving two paths through the shrubbery. The bushes in their path were pulverized, exploding into clouds of white dust that rose high into the air. Those bushes were made of salt, too.Yang Yi stopped, firing no more. Based on his observations so far, the island seemed to be harmless, just a whole lot of pristine white salt. But he had walked through a desert made of salt before and knew it could form into humanoid shapes and attack. He had no intention of setting foot on it himself."Look at the Human-Head Octopus's corpse!" Suna called out.Yang Yi’s gaze had been fixed on the island. He looked back at the shore and saw that the octopus’s flesh had already dried out, sticking to the coast like a piece of jerky. Under normal circumstances, even if flesh was pulverized into paste, it would never dry out that fast.Unless something had sucked all the moisture out of it.Yang Yi’s eyes narrowed. A plan was already forming in his mind. Before, he had no way to explore the island other than going ashore in person. But things were different now. He had the Armor of the Lost Sinner.By wearing just one of its gauntlets, he could control the entire suit remotely, as if it were an extension of his own body. Therefore, Yang Yi could use the Armor of the Lost Sinner as a proxy to explore the island and gather materials.Suna handed him a glass jar containing two listless Long-Legged Sardines. Ever since the Fuzz-Spider hatchlings had all perished, the Long-Legged Sardines had taken over as the resident lab rats in the witch's laboratory. The fish could survive out of water for over twenty-four hours and were very easy to keep."What are these for?""Toss one inside the chest plate, and drop one on the ground. Let's see if they dehydrate," Suna replied.Yang Yi thought it was a good idea and did as she suggested. The two sardines had already been weighed and were both around 100g. A sharp drop in weight would confirm dehydration.Once ready, Yang Yi gave the Armor of the Lost Sinner a simple iron shovel and a wooden bucket. He then lowered a raft and controlled the armor to climb down the side of the ship. Because the armor couldn't swim, it needed the raft to get ashore. Then, Yang Yi controlled the armor, using the iron shovel as a paddle, and rowed towards the island. He had the armor's field of vision, so controlling it wasn't difficult.Meanwhile, Suna drew up a bucket of seawater, curious about the salinity. The testing method was simple; you only needed the volume and weight to get a rough calculation. But there was no need to calculate. Within minutes of being brought on deck, salt crystals began to precipitate out of the water. This meant the water below them was in a supersaturated state."Supersaturated seawater…" Suna's crimson eyes were filled with disbelief. And this wasn't a lake; this was the vast, boundless ocean! Creating such a localized pocket of supersaturated saltwater was practically impossible. Yet here it was.Once ashore, Yang Yi found a safe spot on his ship, closed his eyes, and poured his entire focus into controlling the armor. The island was covered in white sand, but it wasn't loose. Especially near the coast, it was all hard-packed blocks of white salt. Yang Yi maneuvered the armor to the crater he'd made earlier, scooped some salt and soil into the wooden bucket he carried, and then placed the bucket inside the chest plate. As Suna instructed, he took out one of the Long-Legged Sardines and dumped it on the ground, leaving the other in its jar for comparison. The moment the sardine hit the salty ground, something strange happened. The next second, as if experiencing a final burst of life, the Long-Legged Sardine was suddenly full of vigor. It began to flee frantically, scurrying towards the sea. Yang Yi was taken aback and prepared to have the armor grab it. But even through the armor's vision, he could see the sardine's four pearly, plump legs, especially its feet, were rapidly withering, shriveling up as if being air-dried.Before Yang Yi could even swing the shovel, a spike of salt erupted from the ground, impaling the Long-Legged Sardine from below and pinning it on the spot.At the same instant, all of its moisture was sucked out, turning it into a piece of jerky that had been left to bake in the sun for far too long."What the…?"Yang Yi shot up from his chair.
