Undoing the Divine Spell
==============================
"Good morning, Adventurer City! Let's take a look at today's news."
"Let's see, oh my, the very first item is a major headline."
"Yesterday at three in the afternoon, a large group of corrupted monsters suddenly appeared in the city and attacked a branch of the Temple of the Gods."
"Afterwards, thanks to the strenuous efforts of the Temple of the Gods's transcendents, the corrupted monsters were successfully repelled. Praise to them!"
"Second, the incident of a mysterious person attacking the Hunting Tournament and the Mechanist Association the day before yesterday is still not resolved,"
"The official response from the Mechanist Association stated that more will be revealed during today's street speech."
"That's right, today, our city streets will welcome a very, very, very important figure,"
"He is! The vice-president of our Mechanist Association! Praise the God of Adventurers, we will have the fortune to see this grand personage on the streets!"
"Click—"
Jiang Cheng impatiently turned off the news livestream. She was here for updates on the incidents related to herself, not to listen to a bunch of sycophants, enslaved by the upper echelons, painting a rosy picture of things.
"Well? Are you done yet?"
Jiang Cheng frowned and turned to look at Lyle.
Lyle swallowed the last piece of bread in his hand, gulped down a big glass of milk, and cleared his mouth.
"Ready, we can head out,"
Lyle said, patting down his clothes as he stood up.
"Didn't expect you to know how to cook,"
Lyle smacked his lips with lingering satisfaction.
"Heh,"
Jiang Cheng rolled her eyes and snarked, "What, should I depend entirely on buying food or having nobles send it to me? Not worried about being poisoned?"
"Ah, well,"
Lyle smiled lightly, "The Hero's blessing gives immunity to non-transcendent poisons."
"......"
Jiang Cheng was speechless. Back when she had taught Lyle survival skills in the wild, he had seemed to listen very earnestly.
So it really did come down to favorability, huh? Jiang Cheng curled her lips in a faint smile.
This was just as she wanted. With this last identity, she didn't want Lyle to have any special feelings for her.
"Alright," she replied blandly, picking up her black parasol trimmed with white lace.
Today, she wasn't wearing her usual nun's habit, but a long black dress.Since it was the height of summer, she also carried her usual parasol.
"Hey," before Jiang Cheng could open the door, she heard Lyle call from behind her.
"What is it?"
She frowned and turned to look at Lyle.
"The divine spell on Renata..."
Lyle began, speaking softly.
"I did it,"
Jiang Cheng interrupted, admitting directly, "Not just that, I've left my divine mark on every member of their tribe. Anything else?"
"You!"
Lyle was clearly unprepared for Jiang Cheng's attitude, rendered speechless with anger.
"Hah, what's wrong, cat got your tongue?"
Jiang Cheng narrowed her eyes and chuckled softly.
"If there's something to say, make it quick. We've got a heavy task today."
"How can you be like this,"
Lyle frowned, "Remove the marks from them."
"Hah?"
Jiang Cheng laughed coldly, "Are you kidding? I remove the marks, and then let you interrogate and learn my secrets? You're not that naïve, are you?"
"Besides..."
Jiang Cheng looked him up and down as if seeing him for the first time.
"I don't recall you having such deep feelings for a non-human? Especially one not even recognized by the Temple of the Gods."
After all, in this world ruled by the gods, the Temple of the Gods, as the symbol of the gods' majesty and voice, did not acknowledge certain nonhumans.
For those unacknowledged, it was equivalent to the gods not recognizing them as sentient beings, labeling them as beasts or monsters.
In most people's eyes, these races were worth less than pigs or dogs; even beggars starving for ten days in the slums dared to scoff at them.
Lyle was silent for a moment, then suddenly laughed.
"That's right,"
Lyle nodded, "I do care less about nonhumans compared to humans."
"But! For this kind of behavior—controlling and threatening an entire tribe—I cannot sit by and do nothing."
"Hah,"
Jiang Cheng's smile grew cold, "So what do you want, then? What can you even do?"
"Undo the divine spell. I won't ask you about your secrets. Otherwise, you know, you're not the only one in this world who can use divine spells."
Lyle replied plainly. If Jiang Cheng refused, he was prepared to take Renata to the Temple of the Gods and have their high-ranked divine spellcasters lift it.
"Hah,"
Jiang Cheng chuckled, "Fine, I'll trust you. A hero's oath is watched by the gods themselves, of course you won't break it."
This guy...
Jiang Cheng pouted inwardly. He really had grown up—he'd even learned how to threaten people.
Still, so long as he walked the path of what he believed to be justice, that was fine; it remained interesting.
There was no need to worry about him being misled—she'd already shown him parts of the darkness before.
The rest, during this magnificent journey, she would naturally let Lyle witness for himself.
In truth, Jiang Cheng didn't have much of a choice. Since Renata belonged to a race not recognized by the Temple of the Gods, they weren't eligible to receive healing from any major divine church.
Thus, Jiang Cheng had never even thought about this possibility. With Lyle vouching for her, getting the Temple of the Gods to save one life was easy.
Jiang Cheng raised her hand, a flash of red light passing through. In her grasp appeared dozens of red ribbons.
With a gentle tug, they snapped. Lyle, well-versed in divine magic, could see she truly had undone the spell. He nodded wordlessly.
'Okay',
Jiang Cheng said, "Since that's done, the rest is my call, alright?"
Turning, she smiled and cocked her head, "Today's task is a heavy one, you know."
"Alright,"
Lyle nodded, then asked curiously, "You said I'd understand once we reached the Temple of the Gods. So what exactly are we doing at the Temple of the Gods and Mechanist Association today?"
"What are we doing..."
Jiang Cheng pursed her lips in a smile, pretending to think.
"First off, let's focus on those issues concerning nonhumans," she replied.
This was part of her deal with Renata and her tribe, so she'd see it through.
Whatever else she did to help could be chalked up to Lyle—her few remaining scruples.
"And then?"
Lyle asked. He still didn't understand why he could learn information about that mysterious mecha-wielding organization at the Temple of the Gods.
Jiang Cheng shot him a look as if he were an idiot.
"If you want information on a group, naturally you go to the archives or the library."
Lyle scratched his head awkwardly. Jiang Cheng had gotten him so used to probing for truth by all sorts of weird means that he'd nearly forgotten the normal way to gather intelligence.
"As for the Mechanist Association,"
Jiang Cheng continued, "No need for us to go there today."
"Huh?"
Lyle blanked out
"Why?"
"Because we'll never make it in time~"
Jiang Cheng replied cheerfully, without explanation. She picked up her parasol and headed out.
The real reason? Naturally, it was because Ferran was about to act according to her plan.
