My Demon Friends

Chapter 299: 5 Yuan in One Day

"Good morning, Zhou Li."

Baozi sat down next to Brother Nan with a bowl of millet porridge, adorned with a few pickled radishes—it was her standard these days. But the egg in her hand wasn't there a couple of days ago.

She tapped the egg on the table.

"Morning."

Zhou Li glanced at her and asked, "How many postcards did you sell last night?"

"Sixteen."

"How much did you clear?"

"Twenty Cents each."

"That's not bad."

No wonder she dared to add an egg to her breakfast.

She'd cleared nearly thirty yuan. Considering Baozi's usual expenses—millet porridge and free kimchi in the morning, and usually one meal of rice noodles costing two yuan and twenty cents and one meal of vegetarian dishes as Brother Nan had described—her food cost roughly seven or eight yuan a day. She could eat for three or four days with that.

Her usual protein came mainly from the milk Zhou Li's Mom bought her and the yogurt Brother Nan got her, which she loved. On days she drank a lot, she could go through six or seven bottles. She had almost finished them in less than a week since the semester started.

For a proper treat, she mainly depended on the kindness of Brother Nan, Zhou Li, and Cotton Swab.

Zhou Li was genuinely happy for her. "But the flea market has ended, hasn't it?"

"Yeah."

Baozi threw the peeled egg into the porridge and mashed it with a metal spoon into little chunks, then carefully scooped up a tiny piece, roughly the size of half a fingernail, and put it in her mouth. Her eyes squinted with satisfaction. It gave her a feeling of 'tomorrow's worries can wait for tomorrow.'

"What will you do then?"

"Today I have two dorm rooms to photograph. I'll shoot in the morning and set up my stall for half a day this afternoon, and all day tomorrow," Baozi said determinedly. "As long as you put effort and persistence into something, it definitely pays off."

"Effort..."

"You could pitch to the dorms you're taking photos for!" Brother Nan really couldn't stand it anymore and couldn't help but speak up. "It's a sure sell to each of them. Even if they're not too keen, if you ask, they'll probably buy."

"That's a good idea..." Baozi said thoughtfully.

"As long as you manage to speak up, I guarantee you'll sell more this morning than you did in these past two days at the stall." Brother Nan paused, considering the character of this unmotivated Baozi, then added, "Provided you don't adopt an indifferent 'take it or leave it' attitude..."

"I understand." Baozi nodded earnestly.

"You understand crap..." Brother Nan rolled her eyes and passed one of the two fried eggs from her bowl to her.

"Are there no more photo sessions after this?" Zhou Li continued to show concern.

"None for now." Baozi looked down and scooped up some porridge. "Most of the graduates have finished their defenses."

"What about after this weekend?"

"I'll set up my stall."

"Every day?"

"I can manage the stall while attending online classes." Baozi recognized her cousin's concern and paused. "And besides, I perform better academically than both of you even when I skip classes."

"..."

Her cousin felt really bad. Extremely bad.

He simply stopped talking and focused on eating his Sichuan wontons.

Out of the corner of his eye, he inadvertently saw Huai Xu lining up at the Sichuan wontons window, fanning himself with a meal card. It seemed like Brother Nan's devil-may-care attitude had rubbed off on him. Wait a minute! A meal card?

Zhou Li silently withdrew his gaze.

By now, Little Cousin had completely crushed the egg and mixed it thoroughly with the millet porridge. After getting her porridge, she had sneakily swung by the soy milk window and added a big spoonful of white sugar, making it taste sweetly satisfying.

She was content.

Taking another bite of the fried egg Brother Nan had given her, her expression remained unfazed, betraying none of her inner joy.

...

Bicycle Association leadership elections.

Brother Nan, bored, had dragged Zhou Li along for the spectacle.

Huai Xu had also come along.

The Bicycle Association was crowded. He blended in easily, sitting down without anyone minding.

"Where did you get that meal card from?" Zhou Li couldn't help but ask.

"What meal card?"

"This morning, the one you used at the Sichuan wontons window."

"Oh, you saw that, huh!" Huai Xu's eyes darted back and forth, deflecting the query. "You saw it, yet you didn't come over and swipe it for me?"

"You have a meal card? Where did it come from?"

"Borrowed it!"

"...From whom did you borrow it?"

"Those folks who haven't returned to school; many left their meal cards behind. I figured it was a waste to just leave them lying there. And you know, some things get damaged if they're not used for a long time?" Huai Xu racked his brains on how to reason with Zhou Li. "In ancient times, some people built houses they couldn't live in themselves and even had to pay others to help live in them."

"So he should be thanking you then?"

"Right! Anyway, when I got this card, it only had two yuan on it. All the money in it now is what I've added myself. I even wrote down his address and bed number in a notebook, intending to return it at the end of the semester. Maybe he'll come back next semester, find the money has increased to three yuan, and jump for joy."

"Maybe..." Zhou Li paused. "Next time, you could tell me about these things. Chen Yang's card is in the dorm; I could have borrowed his for you."

"Isn't it the same?"

"Don't you feel guilty stealing?"

"Not really!"

"..."

"Stop talking, it's starting." Brother Nan interrupted them.

"..."

The Club President and the two vice presidents began delivering their farewell speeches in succession.

The Club President and one of the male vice presidents were quite cheerful, but the female vice president was more emotional, choosing to say things that tugged at the heartstrings.

The Bicycle Association was a large club with a strong presence, and most of its hundred or so members had gone out for fun together. When it was purely about having fun, they always got along harmoniously, so naturally, they shared quite a few beautiful memories.

Not only were the Club President and the two vice presidents stepping down, but it was also nearly equivalent to them leaving the club.

After senior year, their time at school would be minimal; they would likely only return for their graduation defense. For many, this farewell was akin to a final goodbye.

The area below was unusually quiet.

When the female vice president finished speaking, thunderous applause broke out. Even Brother Nan seemed to be affected by the atmosphere.

"Feeling something, aren't you?" she turned her head to say to Zhou Li.

"A little." Zhou Li was very calm.

"This club is pretty well-run," Brother Nan whispered. "I went to the Fighting Club's change of leadership yesterday afternoon. Tsk tsk, fewer than ten people showed up. To become an officer, you just need to go up on stage."

"So, are you going to run?" Zhou Li pointed upwards, where the female vice president had already begun hosting the election ceremony. "I think you have a great chance."

"No."

Brother Nan paused after speaking, glanced at him, then glanced at Huai Xu. "What do you think about us starting our own club? The application period for clubs seems to be at the end of this semester. We can establish one of our own; I'll be the Club President, and you two can be the vice presidents."

"Sure!" Huai Xu's eyes lit up.

"What about club members?" Zhou Li asked quietly.

"We'll recruit from the freshmen next year when school starts!" Brother Nan said. "We'll develop it into the biggest club in the entire school!"

"..."

"What are you laughing at?"

"I just remembered something happy."

BANG!

"I've stopped laughing." Zhou Li wiped the smile off his face, playing along with Brother Nan's dream. "Alright, what will we call the club then?"

"HMM..."

Brother Nan, stroking her chin, started thinking and soon came up with an answer. "How about Girls' Fighting Club?"

Huai Xu: "Sure!"

Zhou Li: "?"

Brother Nan also realized that wouldn't work. "Looks like that's no good. We need to think of another one... You guys think too, give some suggestions. I'll accept any good ones because I'm the most democratic person there is."

"How about Ghost-busting Society?" Huai Xu proposed. "It would also help with our business, and we can ask Su Jue as well."

"Su Jue," Zhou Li corrected.

"Oh, oh... right, invite him too," Huai Xu said.

"It wouldn't pass the review," Zhou Li threw cold water on the idea.

"How about Magic Association? We study magic!" The Old monster was full of wily ideas.

"..." Zhou Li was expressionless.

"Magic Association!" The Old monster quickly responded. "We pretend to do magic, but actually use my abilities. Others produce a small goldfish from their hands; I'll produce a big shark. Others conjure doves; I'll conjure eagles. Others..."

"A Magic Association already exists." Zhou Li interrupted him.

"Darn it!" The Old monster clenched his fist. He looked like he was planning to go over and annihilate them that evening.

"How about calling it Probability Society?" Brother Nan finally came up with another idea. "We'll just say it's a club for studying probability. Luck and probability should be more or less the same, right?"

"So what would the club activities be?" Zhou Li paused. "Going out every day to buy lottery tickets and playing games for critical hit gear?"

"Why do you talk so much?!" Brother Nan grew impatient.

"...Agreed." Zhou Li said expressionlessly.

"I agree too." Huai Xu raised his hand. "But what exactly will our club activities be?"

"Eating, drinking, and having fun!" Brother Nan declared.

"That's great! What do you think, Zhou Li?" Huai Xu turned his head.

"Why don't we just call it the Eating, Drinking, and Fun Club?" Zhou Li couldn't help but ask. "And can this really become the largest club?"

"?"

"I didn't say anything."

"Passed unanimously then." Brother Nan revealed a satisfied smile, then gestured with her eyes for them to stop talking, as the elections had begun.

The elections at the Bicycle Association were still relatively active, with competition for positions including the Club President and vice presidents. Although Brother Nan didn't know who exactly was running for office, she didn't vote, instead pondering her Probability Society.

「That very afternoon.」

She had already inquired about the complete process for applying to start a club and had even printed the application forms.

Wanting her Probability Society to seem somewhat legitimate, she even decided to look into probability theory textbooks. Of course, she ultimately didn't understand them and just copied a few sentences onto the application.

Once the application form was ready, it was like having the club itself. With the club in hand, it needed a logo. Brother Nan, thinking photo editing and designing logos were pretty similar tasks, assigned this job to Baozi. With the logo, it also needed posters and club certificates. This was simple; Cotton Swab could manage it. As for the recruiting banner, preparing it next semester wouldn't be too late. Seems like everything's settled then...

Brother Nan sat on her bed, her long legs under her short shorts reflecting an ivory glow, a tuft of hair sticking up on her head. In her happiness, she waved her hand grandly. "When the time comes, you all will be the founding members of our Probability Society! I'll make sure you win the lottery every day!"
