My Demon Friends

Chapter 363 It's too difficult

The class monitor position went to Chen Yang.

Last year, he had run for class monitor and lost, settling for becoming the study committee member instead. Today, that disappointment was somewhat alleviated.

So, Dorm 502 was down one study committee member but up one class monitor, which, from the perspective of the dorm's interests, was probably a loss.

They had talked a big game at the start of freshman year. However, in reality, Chang Xiaoxiang and Liu Zhengming, in their roles as the organization committee member and the life committee member respectively, hadn't brought any benefits to the dorm. Chen Yang, on the other hand, often skipped someone from their dorm when he helped the teacher take attendance.

That benefit was as good as it got for them.

The election for class committee positions continued.

The enthusiasm of the others in Dorm 502 surpassed Zhou Li's expectations; Chang Xiaoxiang stood up again when it came time to re-elect the study committee member.

He stated that his previous role as the organization committee member had been relatively leisurely, and he hoped to switch to a different position so he could continue to shine. He also boasted about his past work, convincing everyone that he would be just as effective in a different role.

The competition for study committee member was intense, even more so than for class monitor, with a total of five candidates.

Chang Xiaoxiang actually got elected.

Liu Zhengming remained as the life committee member. There was no competition for the role, which involved handling class funds—something everyone else probably considered a hassle.

The election for the psychology committee member was last.

Zhou Li planned to be re-elected, so he went up on stage and gave a brief summary of his work from the past year and his plans for the new year—all of it just perfunctory remarks. But thanks to the enthusiastic cheering from students of both genders from the two classes, he actually came across as quite impressive.

"Does anyone else want to come up?"

"Does anyone else want to come up?"

Zhou Qianqian asked several times. Seeing no competitors, she couldn't help but express her disappointment, "This psychology committee position is so leisurely, and you all get quantitative credit for it. Don't any of you have any ambition? Don't you have any desire to get ahead?"

Zhou Li was exasperated. This person sure can hold a grudge, he thought.

In the end, she had no choice but to reluctantly announce, "Alright then, congratulations to Zhou Li. Looks like he'll coast on quantitative credit for another year."

Zhou Li was all smiles on the surface.

He bowed and stepped down.

Little Cousin lifted her head again. Her gaze traveled over the top of her computer screen and met his.

Zhou Li nodded.

A weight seemed to lift from Little Cousin's heart.

「Next was Class Four.」

Zhou Qianqian expressed great regret over Brother Nan stepping down. Then Zhong En, their class's original study committee member, was elected as class monitor.

Both classes promoted their study committee members... Zhou Li mused.

The two toe-picking cute girls, who only knew how to play, did not participate in the election for any position.

Soon it was time for the election for the psychology committee member again.

Baozi walked up on stage slowly.

Her movements and facial expressions made it clear she was reluctant to give a speech. However, her speech itself—a single sentence delivered with utmost seriousness—suggested confidence:

"I want to be re-elected. I hope everyone supports me!"

...

The audience was silent for a couple of seconds, then the first competitor walked onto the stage.

At that moment, Zhou Li clearly saw a flash of confusion in her eyes. Then she slightly shifted her gaze to meet Zhou Li's once more.

Why isn't it like with you? she wondered.

Zhou Li shrugged his shoulders.

Little Cousin continued to stand expressionless at the podium, her hands tightly clasped. Her eyes darted around, quietly observing the reactions of the classmates below and discreetly listening to the speeches of the competitors.

Obviously, she was getting nervous.

If I could do it over, she thought, I definitely wouldn't have been so lazy as to go on stage without even drafting a speech, or too lazy to say more than a few words.

The first competitor finished their speech.

Little Cousin quietly let out a sigh of relief.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw another hand go up below… A second candidate came up on stage.

Baozi was dismayed. ...

Four. There were four candidates.

Indeed, the position of psychology committee member had caught the interest of quite a few people.

Voting commenced, and the votes were counted.

Zhou Li kept glancing at Little Cousin, savoring her nervousness and unease, even discreetly taking out his phone to snap a picture.

Regrettably, the photo turned out a bit blurry.

Little Cousin was, after all, a bit too far away from him. When reviewing the photo with Brother Nan, Zhou Li couldn't help but sigh with a tinge of regret. Why isn't my phone one of those with sixty- or a hundred-times zoom, and a hundred-megapixel camera?

The voting results were announced.

Little Cousin came in second, just two votes shy of first place.

When the voting results were declared, Little Cousin's eyes showed an even deeper confusion than before, and a series of questions ran through her mind:

Without this position, where will my quantification credits come from?

Without quantification credits, can I still get a scholarship?

The scholarship is several thousand yuan; how can I not get it?

Can I achieve first place in my grades?

Can I continue to skip classes as I please without worrying about my regular grades?

...

Why didn't anyone in Class Three compete for this position?

By the time the last question formed in her mind, Little Cousin's thoughts were a chaotic jumble of wool. She subconsciously turned her head to look at Zhou Li.

There she saw Zhou Li and Brother Nan both hunched over, hiding behind a phone, its camera pointed right at her.

Little Cousin was speechless. ...

She averted her gaze, her expression turning indifferent.

Indeed, what goes around comes around in this world.

「The class meeting ended.」

As usual, the class officers stayed behind for a brief meeting. Zhou Qianqian, following procedure, gave them a few instructions.

Brother Nan was no longer a class officer, but she still sat nearby, waiting for Zhou Li.

Baozi stood at the door.

To be honest, I'm quite upset with those two right now, she thought. But since we agreed earlier to get bubble tea tonight, and Brother Nan is treating, I can't really say no. Especially since Brother Nan usually buys the expensive kind, which will save me from my usual fate of only affording tea from the cheapest shops.

A few minutes later, the group left the classroom.

Since most of the students had left, the corridor was very quiet. Most classrooms were dark, with only a few casting a pale, ghastly light.

It was a bit like a scene from a horror movie.

Brother Nan hooked an arm around Baozi's neck. Due to their height difference, it looked like she was corralling a small chick. She also deliberately used a somber tone to tease her, "It's over. Your only source of quantification credits is gone. You won't be able to get a scholarship anymore."

Baozi turned her head away, unwilling to speak to her.

"I have a solution!"

Baozi immediately turned her head back around.

Brother Nan burst out laughing, pinching her soft, doughy cheeks as she said, "Clubs can also help you earn quantitative points, though fewer than class officers. I'll get you some random position when the time comes... Let me think what position."

Baozi stared at her, unblinking, letting her pinch her face.

Brother Nan nodded emphatically. "You'll be my secretary, responsible for letting me squish your cute face every day to relieve my stress, how about that?"

Baozi didn't respond.

Brother Nan had much longer legs than hers, and she took wide, fast strides, making it hard for her to keep up. The problem was that Brother Nan held her tightly, not letting her fall behind, so she had to hustle her little short legs quickly to keep pace.

Suddenly, she had a gut feeling that something was off.

Struggling to turn her head while in the crook of Brother Nan's arm, she saw Zhou Li holding his phone, quietly following behind them, the screen illuminating his face.

He's actually recording a video?!

So infuriating!

Before Baozi's protest could fully form on her face, Brother Nan twisted her head back around and continued to steer her forward. They had just reached the commercial street, and the half-sugar, extra-ice black sugar small taro ball milk tea quickly quelled her dissatisfaction.

She followed quietly behind the two, holding her bubble tea.

"Can you get full off bubble tea?"

"Mhm."

"Won't the taro balls get stuck in the socket where your tooth was pulled out?"

"..."

"Tomorrow I'll buy you a couple more cups of congee. This stuff really doesn't fill you up," Brother Nan mused, then added, "and two bottles of breakfast milk. Nutritious."

"Mhm."

Little Cousin remained silent, trying hard to minimize her presence. This was an effective way to reduce the amount of teasing she received.
