The Innkeeper

Chapter 2039: Throw him under the bus

Sun Wu Kong, the legendary Dao Lord, the Monkey King, was smiling widely as he used the key to enter the Primordial Garden. It was the sacred land, even more so than the Primary realm, in his opinion because only the Primordial Garden could still produce Primordial energy.

Although he secretly worked for Nuwa, unbeknownst to the universe, that did not prevent him from having his own goals and agenda. For him, what greater goals were there to grow stronger, and steal better? Both of those could be achieved within the Primoridial Garden.

The best part was that the mistress of the garden had sealed her abilities, so she wouldn't be able to detect his tricks, while any guards she had accompanying her would likely not be skilled enough to detect him anyway.

Yes, there was that super casual and always annoyingly happy Innkeeper. But he never did anything besides leaving a few scathing remarks, and Wu Kong could tolerate that.

Feeling giddy, Wu Kong put on his best, most prominent attire and teleported to the Primordial Garden, ready to mingle and then slowly get lost in the crowd. Yet when he arrived at the Primordial Garden, there was no crowd. Instead, the Innkeeper, the garden mistress, and a scary looking fella were the only ones standing there, looking at him oddly.

"Sir, would you like some lemonade?" asked a rather ordinary looking waiter.

"Oi, look at you little Jasper. Looks like you got selected for a big gig. Moving up in the world, eh?" Wu Kong said as he grabbed the drink.

The server actually blushed at the praise, though his proud expression could not be hidden from the eyes of everyone watching.

Wu Kong grabbed the drink and made his way over to the group.

"Ahoy, Innkeeper. You seem to have started the party without me!" he exclaimed excitedly as he walked up.

"Indeed, I seemed to have done that, though I suspect you may not have enjoyed our previous activities. Regardless, allow me to introduce…"

Ventura, who had been observing all along, interrupted.

"Sun Wu Kong. Such a prestigious personality needs no introduction. Say, Wu Kong, you have been ignoring my invitations for a long time. Now that you're here, why don't you give me an answer?"

The smiling monkey suddenly became hesitant, realizing that he couldn't recognize the scary figure at all.

"This is Ventura," the Innkeeper introduced. "I never knew that you were in contact with him as well. You truly have a social personality."

The change of expression on the monkey's face could only be equated to the facial equivalent of clenching one's rear as he realized who he was standing before.

"Lord… Lord Ventura, what an honor! Truly, it is… it is such an honor to meet you. How… how dare I ignore your invitations? I simply thought my skills were insufficient to hold such an honored post as a teacher in your school."

His words only caused Ventura to chuckle.

"Eclipse, have you heard of the little monkey that can steal Daos?" Ventura asked. "As it turns out, it was all just rumors. His skills are insufficient, it seems, to even be a teacher at my school."

Wu Kong pulled in his neck, wondering how he got involved in this mess. He hadn't even started doing anything, and he was already in trouble. His eyes locked onto the Innkeepers, pleading for assistance.

"I think that having him as a teacher may not be worth it," the Innkeeper said, finally allowing Wu Kong to feel a sense of relief.

"Just look, he acted as a bodyguard for Lex for only a month, and provoked countless little fellows for no reason. Can you imagine if he became a teacher and stole the talent from all his students?"

Goosebumps. Wu Kong got goosebumps as he looked at the Innkeeper with an expression of betrayal. What was throwing a fellow under a bus? This was throwing a fellow under a bus. All he had done was use the Innkeeper as a convenient scapegoat - was that so wrong?

"Yes, you're not wrong," Ventura said musingly. "In that case, Eclipse, why don't you invite him to be a part of your garden. I've heard you have a special place reserved for powerful specimens."

Eclipse looked at Wu Kong, but instead of going along with the two of them, she frowned.

"No, I feel like this monkey has bad intentions for my garden. It's better to throw him out to the Edge of the Void."

Sun Wu Kong, proud Monkey King, and menace to the whole universe, once again looked at the Innkeeper pleadingly. Why did this feel more like a grilling party rather than a tea party?

"These are all great ideas, but let's perhaps wait till after the tea party is over? After all, he is one of my guests here. More importantly, he still has an outstanding fee to pay."

Wu Kong suddenly leaped at the opportunity.

"Yes, yes I am a guest of the Inn," Wu Kong exclaimed with great fervor. "You saw how close I was with little Jasper? It's because of how close I am with everyone at the Inn. In fact, I have long been considering joining the Inn. Alas, the Innkeeper won't let me. Even so, I'm still a guest. A guest of the Innkeeper!"

The Innkeeper chuckled, feeling a little of his stress finally drain. Everything was great as long as no one was threatening to start another universal war!

Before they could continue to tease Wu Kong, more and more guests started to appear. This time, it was not one at a time as nearly a dozen guests all appeared in quick succession.

To start with, Hiran Kokan, the Henali governor appeared, leading a few other guests. Then some of the guests who had sent Letters of Intent to the Innkeeper.

Yet the arrivals that attracted the Innkeepers attention were two Devils. From what he recalled, he had sent Ballom only one key to enter the tavern, so where had he gotten his hands on another key from? Had he reached out to the Governor?

The Innkeeper didn't mind - he was just curious about the woman who was standing arm-in-arm with Ballom.
