Yumiko and I got called to go to the station's testing hall one day and we immediately made our way there to find Franz already there waiting for us.
Ries was also following along though she's really there just to check out the weapons.
She even brought along a camera just so she could document everything.
"Where are they?" Yumiko practically demanded with a desperate edge in her voice.
Franz didn't even show any reaction to her and simply went to a table where a cover was laid out to hide whatever was under it.
Obviously we're here because Franz had told us he had finished making the weapons which included Yumiko's swords.
"Calm down woman, I have them here," He grumbled, gesturing to the cover.
Despite him trying to act so nonchalant, I could tell that he was actually really excited to show off what he had made.
Well, Yumiko was obviously excited given that her tail was wagging up a storm behind her.
I also have to admit I was quite excited to see the weapons he made as well since this was the first time I would be seeing a custom made weapon.
The Zwerger smith stopped at the side of the table and grabbed onto the cover that he had draped over it before turning to Yumiko and I with a smirk on his face.
"You ready?"
Yumiko and I nodded, my Inucani already staring at the cover with bloodshot eyes.
She really wants the weapon I see.
Franz then pulled off the covers, revealing two bladeless sword handles lying on the workbench alongside something that looked like a pocket sized cube.
Well… Even though I say sword handles… It really looks like large cylinders that had a sword handle attached to them at one end.
Yumiko went over to the table, her hands already reaching out for the supposed swords before she paused and looked at the Zwerger.
"May I?"
He gestured for her to go ahead.
She reached forward and grabbed one of the sword handles, lifting it up to inspect it.
I was about to point out that there wasn't a blade when the cylinder around the handle suddenly split apart and rearranged itself above the handle, forming itself into the shape of a kanata's blade.
There was then an electrical whine before the edge of the blade lit up with a red glow.
Without a word, she turned her gaze to the dummy target that was a short distance away from her before her figure disappeared.
She then reappeared a step to the side of where she had been and there was a moment of silence before the dummy got sliced into pieces.
She then swung her sword again at another dummy from where she stood, unleashing a flying energy blade that sliced through the neck of the dummy, cutting its head off.
Ries was letting out a really cute squeal beside me as she recorded the entire thing. She's really trying her best to keep herself from saying anything so that the video does not record her voice.
"This… What did you do?" Yumiko asked, her eyes still locked on the blade.
Franz tilted his head at her, "I can't tell if you like it or not?"
She turned to him, "Like it? I love it! I want to know what you did to make this so good! The balance is perfect, and I thought it might be too heavy or too light but neither was the case either! It even cuts better than the last one!"
The Zwerger grinned, "Heh… You told me that your sword was blown up and destroyed, right? So I thought about coming up with a way to make sure it won't happen again and that was the solution."
Yumiko looked down at the sword she was holding, "How is this the solution?"
He gestured at the sword, "Place it on the ground and step away from it."
She raised an eyebrow at it but did as he asked anyway.
The Zwerger then reached into his coat and tossed what looked like another cube at it but Yumiko seemed to know what it was because her eyes went wide in surprise.
She only just managed to open her mouth before the Zwerger pressed on a button and an explosion ripped through the space around the sword that she had left on the ground.
Well… I think that explosion might have destroyed the sword…
The dust quickly cleared up and we were greeted with the sight of… The broken pieces of the sword.
Err… Did he fuck up somewhere?
Yumiko was glaring at the Zwerger with murderous intentions clear in her eyes but the smith didn't look bothered by it and merely went up to the pieces that were on the floor before he stretched his hand above it.
"Sword Red, Assemble!"
I thought he was calling for some superhero group to assemble for a moment until the broken pieces of the sword suddenly flew up into the air and reassembled themselves into the cylinder handle in his hands.
He then gave it a wave before it transformed back into the katana complete with the red glow on its edge.
He turned to grin at Yumiko, "It's practically indestructible since it can just reassemble itself no matter how small the pieces are! So you don't even need to worry about it being destroyed anymore! Aren't I a genius?! Oh, you can change the activation code word yourself by the way, I'll show you how to do it later."
Yumiko rushed up to him and started fussing over the sword, inspecting every single inch of it when the Zwerger handed the blade back to her.
"Amazing… It's like… It was never broken… It feels exactly the same!"
The Zwerger huffed, "Heh, what did I say? I told you I could do it, couldn't I? What's more, I also added more functions to the swords! You know with the energy running through the blade, it could cut through practically anything aside from anti-energy fields, right?"
Yumiko nodded, "Energy based weapons would be useless against those but as long as you can destroy the generator behind it with a physical blow, you would be able to disable it."
He grinned, "Disable the energy and watch the edge closely."
She raised an eyebrow at him but did as he asked.
All of us peeked around her to see the red glow dim before shutting off, which should have turned the sword into a blunt weapon since the 'edge' of such swords relied on the energy to form it.
But even as we watched, the metal seemed to merge together to cover up the part where the energy would run through, turning it into a normal blade.
"Are you telling me… That I can also cut things without the energy lining?" Yumiko asked.
"That's not all, the blade is also programmed to always be linked with the hilt. Try swinging it like you are trying to release a flying energy slash while the energy blade is deactivated at that target over there."
Yumiko seemed to understand what he meant as she turned towards the target and swung down her sword without question.
The blade of the sword ended up detaching from the hilt and flying off, swinging through the air as if it was still connected to the handle via a string of some sort.
Unfortunately, it seems like Yumiko used too much strength as the blade ended up flying behind the target, slashing the air behind it rather than the target itself before it returned back to connect itself with the hilt once more.
Unperturbed, Yumiko tried again, doing the same motion of swinging her sword but this time, the blade sliced through the neck of the dummy, cutting it off cleanly like it was made of paper before snapping back to the hilt again.
The Zwerger smith raised a finger, "Just a note though… If there's something like a wall that's in between you and the blade, it might end up getting stuck behind the wall. In the event that such a thing happens, you can shorten and lengthen the distance between the hilt and the blade using the buttons at the handle. The one above will make it fly further and the one below will return it."
Yumiko started fiddling with the sword again and sure enough, the blade started floating away from the hilt before she switched and the blade floated back down to connect with the hilt again.
Damn… So she has a flying sword that can change its range however she wants… This is so freaking cool.
And she gets two of them as well!
Now I kind of want one for myself… I wonder if it's too late to ask him to make one for me too?
"Now feel free to go ahead and try both swords out. As for you… I got your weapon right here. It basically has the same functions as this one though so just go ahead to try it out."
Wait, I also get one just like that as well?! That's so cool!!
Gimme gimme gimme!
