chapter 165

[Party] Honeybread: ㅛ수ㅡㅌ채드[Party] Honeybread: ㅛㅡ챈ㅛㅡAh, damn it!My hands acted faster than my brain again, spamming nonsense in panic.“Hey, switch stance.”I threw the words out and immediately muted my mic again.— “…Huh? Uh, st–stance? Stance… I pressed it, but it says you can’t change during combat?”I held my patience while Jaegyung stammered like an idiot. Soon enough, his voice came through clearly.— “‘But instinct cannot be denied’? What the…?”The screen suddenly zoomed in on Retaking a Class. He appeared holding a quill, opening an academic tome. The quill danced, writing furiously, and the letters it left behind glowed white, peeling from the page and rising into the air. One by one, the letters drifted upward, slotting into place like stars, until they formed something resembling the Milky Way.Those words seemed as if they would shine forever. Then, at the center, they swirled and condensed, light growing stronger until it compressed into a blinding mass… and burst. The shattering light cascaded down on both Honeybread and Retaking a Class. Every fragment that touched us became a massive heal, overflowing past my max HP, raining endlessly. While I stared, dazed at the spectacle, time resumed, as if waking from a dream.Just as I’d guessed, the broken mirror shards homed in on our characters, shaving away HP—damage strong enough to kill outright. But thanks to the light Jaegyung had unleashed, the damage vanished instantly, washed away by floods of healing. And then the worst happened—Groove-Eye swelled to bursting and exploded with a deafening bang. The blast damage was enormous, but our HP bars were full, and more heals followed immediately, letting us survive. If Jaegyung hadn’t switched stance, we would have either died to the shards or been wiped by the explosion’s aftermath. The shards fell to the ground like glittering rain, slowly fading. Groove-Eye, now at about 10% HP, wheezed like a deflating balloon, drifting weakly. Its body looked white again—its Authority stripped, back to its original state. The once-frantic monster, smaller and frailer, plopped down before us. We retargeted it and unleashed everything.Panting and reeling, Groove-Eye could only gasp for air. We hammered it with skill after skill. Amid the rush, Jaegyung’s voice reached me, bright with agitation.— “Honeybread, what was that? What just happened? Can’t you unmute and explain?”[Party] Honeybread: no— “Awww…!”[Party] Honeybread: are you nuts;Frustrated, Jaegyung whined on-stream with forced cuteness, but no way was I falling for a guy’s aegyo.Still, since he was streaming, I typed out the explanation.[Party] Honeybread: when the mirrors popped[Party] Honeybread: felt like[Party] Honeybread: mirror cliff— “Mirror Cliff? Why… oh, the flight restriction?”[Party] Honeybread: yepAfter that, he fell quiet, clearly thinking, then muttered rapidly under his breath:— “Wow… You’re right. A space like Mirror Cliff formed, and back then we could use flight in a no-fly zone. You caught that hint and tied it to the fact we couldn’t change stance. Why stances? Because Squeaky forced our stances and got penalized by Divine Punishment. Then all its debuffs dropped to zero stages.”I hadn’t thought it through nearly that deeply, but hey, it worked.— “See? I told you, you actually use your brain.”[Party] Honeybread: even if I tell you, you bitch about itGroove-Eye stirred again, but now, weakened from losing its Authority and surviving its own explosion, its shrunken body made it feeble. Autos barely /N_o_v_e_l_i_g_h_t/ hurt, and its HP bar melted rapidly.I stayed tense, expecting a final desperate mechanic, but no—its diminished ego and lost Authority left it too broken to fight back.At last, Groove-Eye shriveled down to the size of a golf ball, HP hitting 0%.Combat With Blade of Supplication, you have defeated the Giant White Creature.System The Abandoned Temple of the Forgotten God has been opened.System Progress of Concealed Mirror Maze has been updated. The tiny, collapsed body sat on the ground, untargetable. Not dead—released. I felt a strange relief, glad we didn’t have to kill it after all. While I looted the drops, the area shifted back into the Temple lounge. Made sense—those illusions had been Authority tricks. But the chandeliers and lights were restored too, which was oddly considerate. ZeroSoft probably didn’t want players lost in the dark.“Give me a sec.” Jaegyung disappeared from sight—sorting his thoughts, no doubt.Retaking a Class stood still, so I ran over and parked my character beside his. After a few minutes of silence, Jaegyung finally spoke again.— “I’ve been thinking about Squeaky’s first skill, Instinct Detection. I think the instinct it read influenced that special cutscene…”He paused, then continued:— “From what I’ve seen, you’re unusually aggressive for a Guardian Apostle, Honeybread. Everyone notices. You don’t play like a standard tank. That suggests your playstyle mirrors your actual disposition.”…My disposition?— “Players don’t usually hide themselves in games. Some roleplay, sure, but it’s rare. You must’ve unconsciously revealed your own tendencies.”I nodded, skeptical but not dismissive.— “I skimmed that hidden story clip you sent earlier. Your dialogue choices stood out… cynical, almost. Maybe not the perfect word, but still. Like when Adam and Abrea clashed, you chose to backstab Abrea first. Or when you dropped the ore by pranking, you chose to kick it away instead of picking it up. Those things.”…Who wouldn’t click those choices? They looked fun.— “But if ZeroSoft is tallying those to calculate player disposition, then maybe when Squeaky used Instinct Detection, it read you as a Destroyer. Some games do that, right? Your choices define your personality, which then changes the story path.”[Party] Honeybread: so you never click the same kind of options I do?I asked, doubtful. He answered right away.— “I always choose what seems best for the story. Thinking back, my choices have leaned more toward Harmonizer options, not Murderer.”Interesting… That would explain why, when I tried to change stance, the system message said, You cannot change stance in combat, then added, But instinct cannot be denied. Despite playing as a Guardian, my instincts were closer to a Destroyer, so in crisis, the system forced out Destroyer-style solutions. All I’d done was pick story options, but somehow that revealed my real personality. Hearing it secondhand might have sounded obvious, but experiencing it firsthand was striking.— “And I’d like to analyze that ‘vicarious Authority’ skill and those strange system messages later. But since we haven’t cleared the dungeon yet, let’s leave that for after. If you could gather all related data until then, I’d appreciate it.”Impressed and wary in equal measure—I couldn’t help thinking, Isn’t this just personal data mining? Still, he wrapped up, sparing me from a lecture that could’ve gone on for half an hour.We turned back to the game and crossed the lounge, following the map. Then we entered the dark space behind the dais we’d first discovered at the start of the dungeon.
