Surgery Godfather

Chapter 1230: This Is Our Territory (Part 2)

"Are you busy now? I was just looking for you for something." Dean Xia saw Yang Ping about to leave and immediately said.

Yang Ping quickly welcomed Dean Xia in: "Come in, come in, I'm free. I heard you were coming, so I came out to see. What do you need? Let's talk inside."

Dean Xia hesitated a bit: "Why don't you give me a mask? I don't have one with me. Should I wear isolation clothing?"

Dean Xia was scared by an unknown doctor last time. Yang Ping shook his head, "No need, no need. We're not going into the laboratory, in the office area, you don't need all that."

That guy had expanded management. Last time he didn't even go to the lab, just the office area. Maybe he angered them by trespassing without their consent, those guys.

In the office, Yang Ping quickly poured a cup of tea for Dean Xia. Dean Xia sat down and took a sip of tea, "Is this new tea? It tastes good. I came this time to discuss something with you—Beijing sent a notice. A batch of veteran cadres will come to our hospital for check-ups. If any issues are found, they will be directly treated in our hospital. We should be prepared. These veterans are heroes who bled and sweat for the revolution and national construction. That's why Beijing is very attentive. Beijing hopes you will lead the medical team for this job. Our hospital will organize everything; you just need to oversee crucial points. If treatment or surgery is required, we will have to trouble you to move them to your Institute's department for treatment or surgery."

"How can you say it's troublesome? It's my duty. Rest assured, I will complete the task. These veterans had a tough time before, bleeding and sweating for the country, now it's our turn to do something for them." Yang Ping said without hesitation.

"I looked at the introductions of these veteran cadres. Some were heroic soldiers in the past, others were scientists conducting research in the west. In short, they all made great sacrifices for the country without regard for personal gains. Now we hope they can enjoy their later years." Dean Xia said.

Yang Ping was quite moved. Since childhood, he never liked chasing after stars or actors; he preferred reading about these national contributing heroes. He felt these heroes were the stars worth chasing.

"This time, rather than overseeing crucial points, I will personally oversee everyone's check-up. If any diseases require treatment, I will take charge as the attending doctor. If surgery is needed, I'll personally perform it. Just saying upfront: no one can take this task from me." Yang Ping told Dean Xia.

Dean Xia was taken aback, knowing Yang Ping feared doing anything outside of clinical and research work, and was surprised to see him so attentive and proactive about this.

After chatting with Dean Xia for a while, Song Zimo called saying, "Professor, Professor Li Zehui wants to see you."

"Li Zehui?" Yang Ping was very surprised. How come he suddenly came to China without prior notice?

Song Zimo explained, "He came to Shanghai for an academic conference. Originally his schedule didn't allow a visit here, it was too tight, but for some reason, he suddenly changed his mind and insisted on coming to see us. He's already downstairs at the hospital, should I pick him up, or do you want to head to our department's office? I'll bring him over."

Li Zehui indeed made a sudden decision. He really couldn't spare time during the conference in Shanghai, so he didn't mention it. But having returned to China, he felt he must visit the Professor. He simply came to the hospital hoping to catch him, if not, it wouldn't disrupt his work.

"I'll head to the department office to wait for you." Yang Ping said and proceeded to the department office, just a few floors up and down.

In about ten minutes, Song Zimo brought Li Zehui upstairs. Upon seeing Yang Ping, he was very excited, "Professor Yang, it's been a long time."

"Professor Li, why didn't you tell us in advance? We could have picked you up at the airport." Yang Ping held his hand.

Li Zehui shook his head, "I made a sudden decision. Initially, I didn't want to disrupt you, but after thinking it over, I decided to come after all. I have some things to discuss with you."

"Let's go to my office."

Yang Ping led them to his office, providing a more private space for conversation, unlike the bustling doctors' office.

Yang Ping poured tea for Li Zehui, who quickly accepted it. "I've thought about it for a long time. I came this time just to tell you a few things."

"Did you encounter any special cases you want to share with me?" Yang Ping asked.

Li Zehui shook his head, "No, I wanted to come and tell you that I want to return. I want to join Sanbo Hospital's cardiac surgery department. I heard you don't have an independent cardiac surgery department here yet. I want to come back to help build it, and I don't necessarily need to be the department director, being a regular attending physician is fine."

After finishing, Li Zehui looked at Yang Ping with expectant eyes. His words were unexpected for Yang Ping, feeling somewhat sudden.

"I'm not acting on a whim; I've considered it carefully." Li Zehui said.

Yang Ping thought for a moment and said, "Professor Li, you're doing well in the United States, why suddenly think about coming back?"

Li Zehui is a second-generation Chinese American, born and raised in the United States. However, his parents didn't let him fully Westernize, teaching him Chinese and Chinese culture at home, and maintaining traditional Chinese values and customs, like celebrating the Spring Festival.

For an accomplished American elite, having roots in the U.S., suddenly changing environments might be challenging to adapt to.
