Chapter 210: Gao Hui Bows Down to Life

The pedestrian street, it was already noon.

The tired yet beautiful young woman Gao Hui was sitting on the steps outside the Commercial Bank, with a bottle of water for one yuan and two vegetable buns as her lunch.

The buns were hot.

But having just taken a sip of water, Gao Hui found it hard to eat.

Of the three hundred flyers in her hand, she had managed to distribute barely less than a third.

Since these flyers were printed very beautifully and probably at a high cost, the bosses who employed her cared a lot about them, demanding that any discarded flyers be picked up and redistributed.

They would also check from time to time to make sure the flyers were given only to those with financial capability.

And if they provided a brief explanation to potential customers as required.

But actually that was all in vain.

The exquisite properties advertised on the flyers were located more than forty kilometers from the Provincial City, not to mention schools and shopping centers, there wasn't even a bus service, even though the flyers boasted proximity to the sixth ring road and guaranteed a subway link within five years.

But unless someone was out of their mind, who would spend hundreds of thousands to buy a house in such a place?

So, all morning long,

The earnest and hard-working Gao Hui had distributed only about a hundred flyers.

But Gao Hui felt fortunate for that.

If it weren't for the fact that the property was so remote and selling poorly, this promotional work wouldn't have been outsourced, and without outsourcing, Gao Hui wouldn't have gotten this job.

"I need to work even harder in the afternoon!"

Forcing herself, she bit into the fifty-cent big vegetable bun, chewing on the sour, sticky dough, and the coarse filling that was hard to swallow, yet Gao Hui's gaze became even more determined.

"Hold on, you can do it, your husband needs medicine, needs to nourish his body, the baby needs nutrition, rent needs to be paid, as well as the water and electricity bills, the whole family is counting on this meal—you can't back down!"

"Eighty yuan a day, although it's not much, but it's better than nothing, come on! Come on! You can do it!"

While comforting herself inwardly, Gao Hui forced herself to eat the buns because, in the afternoon, there were still many flyers to distribute, and after going home in the evening, she still had to do the laundry, cook, and take care of the child. Without enough physical strength, she wouldn't make it.

Just then, the round-faced boss lady with a thick stack of flyers walked over.

Seeing Gao Hui resting on the steps with a thick stack of flyers beside her, she snapped coldly, "Oh, taking a break are we? Have you finished distributing the three hundred flyers?"

Gao Hui was startled, and quickly stood up, saying, "Boss lady, I only managed about a hundred this morning, many people threw them away after a glance, so I picked them up again and then…"

"Then what?" The round-faced boss lady coldly interjected, "So you think you have the right to sit here, eat, drink, and enjoy the view?"

Gao Hui, shocked, explained, "I haven't stopped all morning, I've just sat down because it's noon now."

The round-faced boss lady jeered with an ugly expression, "You look decent enough, but I didn't expect you to be so good at slacking and skiving off."

Throwing down a large stack of flyers next to Gao Hui, the round-faced boss lady coldly said, "Here, I don't care about your excuses. Three hundred in the morning, three hundred in the afternoon; the flyers must be distributed, no pay if they're not."

Startled, Gao Hui urgently said, "Boss lady, how can you be so unreasonable? We agreed earlier that I would distribute the flyers conscientiously, picking up any that were thrown away, to ensure that the flyers reached their effective promotional target."

"That was before," the round-faced boss snapped. "Does printing flyers cost nothing? Do I not pay you to distribute them? If not a single house is sold, do I just survive on air from the Northwest!"

"Regardless of what you do, if you don't deliver six hundred effective flyers, don't even think about getting a dime from me."

Hearing this, Gao Hui became desperate, "Boss, aren't you just bullying me?"

"If you're afraid of being bullied, then don't do it. Resign, just like that other guy, who turned and walked away," the round-faced boss snorted coldly. "There are plenty of people looking for jobs. If you don't do it, others will."

Tears welled up in Gao Hui's eyes. To excel at this job, she had spent the entire morning working diligently, ensuring that each flyer reached a potential client who might be interested in this property. She had exerted tremendous effort in persuading them.

Unexpectedly, not only did the boss not appreciate her work, but she arbitrarily increased the workload and scoffed at her to her face.

"Fine, I quit. Settle my wages for yesterday and this morning, and I'll resign," Gao Hui said with tears in her eyes.

Hearing this, the round-faced boss sneered, "Oh, you're resigning after just a day and a half and have the audacity to ask for your salary? I'm already saving face by not charging you for lost work time."

Upon hearing this, Gao Hui became frantic, "Boss, you can't do this. My husband just had surgery, and we urgently need money to pay for rent, utilities, food, and our daily expenses..."

"How can I not do this? It was your own decision to resign, not me firing you, so no wages will be paid out. You can leave right now," the round-faced boss said coldly.

"Whether you urgently need the money or not is none of my concern."

Gao Hui cried in distress. Though it was only one hundred and twenty yuan, she had promised her child that she would buy meat for him that evening, and her husband needed it for recovery.

At that moment, next to the Industrial and Commercial Bank, a skewer stall owner from out of town could not stand it anymore and said in a foreign accent, "You evil woman, you always hire workers just to find a fault within a day or two, drive them away, and then refuse to pay them."

A security guard from the Commercial Bank also stepped forward and addressed the round-faced boss, "I've been observing you for a long time. Every time you find a trivial excuse to dismiss someone without paying them, if you keep this up, I'll call the police."

The round-faced boss's expression turned cold, and she sneered, "What's it to you guys? She resigned herself. I still have to find someone else. If she wants her salary, no way."

This was a pedestrian street.

Many people were coming and going, and by now, some had stopped to watch.

Hearing what the round-faced boss said, the crowd became angry.

"Paying employees is only fair. You hire people, find a fault to dismiss them, and refuse to pay them, isn't that outright fraud?"

"Unless absolutely necessary, people wouldn't work these odd jobs for you. Over a hundred yuan in pay, and you still don't want to pay. Damn it, believe it or not, I'll call a reporter and expose you."

"I've already recorded this video on my phone. If you dare not pay her, believe it or not, I'll upload it online, and let the whole country see your ugly nature."

Seeing the public outrage around her, the round-faced boss pulled out her wallet, grabbed one hundred and twenty yuan, and threw it in front of Gao Hui, huffing, "Ha, haven't seen money before? Just over a hundred yuan, I'll treat it as alms to a beggar."

Hearing this, Gao Hui's tears fell in large drops.

But what does it change? Life must go on. Her husband needs his medicine, her child needs his meat. Even though she was humiliated, she, in her current situation, had no right to refuse.

Just as she faced the round-faced boss, about to bend down and pick up the money from the ground.

A tall and robust figure stood in front of her.

"Bowing before life is not shameful, but you might never be able to straighten your back again."
