Every time Maa had to go to work as a maid with her weakened body, I hated myself for being a filial son. Every time my little brother had to suppress his urge to play with toys, or turn his face away from restaurants offering all kinds of dishes, I hated myself for being a useless elder brother.
Eleven years! Eleven fucking years I worked day and night to improve the condition of my family.
And just when laughter finally began to fill my family, fate once again showed its true colour.
"What sins have I committed for you to hate me so much!?" I muttered, grabbing the locket of Lord Shiva I wore around my neck.
The moment Maa heard about the success rate of Raj's operation, she fell unconscious, unable to handle the shock.
She was carried to a separate emergency ward, accompanied by Leena and the other girl beside her, while Jay and I stayed outside the room where Raj was being treated.
"Doctor, isn't there a way you can save my brother?" I asked. "I don't care whether it costs millions or billions."
I grabbed the doctor by the collar and begged desperately, "Just please save my little brother."
"I apologise, Mr. Aryan, but I'm not a god," the doctor replied. "It's already a miracle that the patient is still breathing with that kind of injury to the heart."
After a brief pause, the doctor sighed and continued, seeing the desperate look on my face. "The success rate of the operation can be increased by 30% if we receive a healthy heart and swap it with the damaged heart of the patient. However, the patient can only hold on for at most two hours, and it's impossible to find a donor in such a short time. Besides, a 31% success rate is still too low, and we can't guarantee—"
"But it's better than 1%!" I stated firmly. "I will arrange for a donor within an hour, so prepare for the operation!"
Before the doctor could respond, I took out my phone and began calling all my connections, business partners, and friends one by one.
---
"Hello, Mr. Aryan. We have found a donor, but it would take him at least five hours to arrive at the location, even if he takes the earliest flight."
This was the last response I received after an hour of desperate searching.
At the same time, the doctor reached the hallway and said, "Mr. Aryan, the patient's condition is getting critical. We need to perform the operation within the next thirty minutes regardless of receiving the heart."
"D-do it. Do the operation!"
"About the heart—"
"Yes, I have found the donor!"
"Alright then, please sign the required documents and meet us with the donor outside the operation theatre within ten minutes."
I completed the necessary formalities and reached the operation theatre, whereas Jay stayed back to answer the questions of the officers.
"Sir, where is the donor?" the doctor asked, seeing me standing alone at the designated place.
"I... I'm the donor!" I declared after a brief pause.
"Sir!?" the doctor stammered. "Are you sure you want to give away your life for this operation? It's not my place to interfere, but think about your mother, who might lose both of her sons because of your decision."
"My brother will live, Doctor," I declared in a firm voice. "Besides, if I don't do it, I will live the rest of my life in guilt for not saving my brother when I had the chance."
The doctor looked at me with both shock and admiration. After ten seconds of silence, the only thing he could say was, "The patient is blessed to have an elder brother like you, Mr. Aryan. We will give you five minutes to fill in the documents and write your will."
After completing the necessary procedures, I was carried to the operation room on a stretcher.
It would be a lie if I said I wasn't scared. I could already feel chills running down my spine, knowing that these white hospital walls would be the last thing I would ever see.
However, once I reached the operation theatre and saw my little brother lying beside me, all my worries and fear vanished.
"We will begin with the anaesthesia, Mr. Aryan," the doctor said. I already understood the meaning behind his words. It was the anaesthesia of eternal sleep I was about to be put into.
I nodded slightly and closed my eyes, giving permission to continue.
The doctor moved the anaesthesia-filled syringe, and as it was about to inject into the glucose bottle connected to my hand, the lights on the ceiling began shaking.
In the next instant, the table started trembling, and the equipment fell onto the floor.
"It's an earthquake!" the nurses shouted, immediately taking cover from the sudden natural disaster.
Within seconds, several cracks appeared on the hospital walls, and the operation theatre descended into chaos as doctors and nurses tried to protect Raj and my body.
Thud—
The ceiling collapsed, and the room filled with dust and debris. I removed the drips from my hand and ran toward the bed where Raj lay unconscious.
"Raj... Raj..." I murmured as I lay on top of him, trying to shield him from the unforeseen disaster. Debris from the ceiling crashed onto my body, shattering my bones instantly.
Drops of blood from my face fell onto Raj's unconscious face as I protected him beneath me.
"Nothing will happen to you as long as this elder brother of yours is alive," I whispered with a faint smile.
After a moment, amid the noise of the collapsing building and the cries of people, another eerie sound echoed.
The sound grew louder, and in the next instant, an unsettling wave of small white particles entered the room from one side and exited from the other, passing straight through my body.
The particles were absorbed into me, and strangely, all my injuries began healing themselves.
In the next second, another wave came and passed. Then another, and another, and another...
The phenomenon continued for more than an hour.
With each passing wave, my body became inhumanly stronger. The debris that had been shattering my body earlier now broke apart upon striking my hardened flesh.
The particles from these waves were awakening something inside me—something I never knew I had locked away.
