The demonic figures rushing toward the sentinel line possessed bodies structured like those of humans, with the only differences being their crimson-red eyes with slit, demonic pupils. Each of them bore a short horn on their forehead, clearly distinguishing them from humans.
Although they looked similar to humans, their demeanor was far removed from it. Wide, revolting ear-to-ear smirks were stretched across their faces, and their bodies exuded an ominous, impure aura that poisoned the air around them.
One by one, the platoon leaders, along with their subordinates, began leaving the wall, descending to clash with the demons below.
"Quick! Follow me," Nathan said, rushing toward the edge of the wall.
His subordinates followed without hesitation, and so did Taranis, though he was slightly confused.
Upon reaching the edge, Nathan jumped off, with hundreds of subordinates following closely behind. Taranis slowed for a moment—doing so was only logical, given the height of the wall—but soon followed after sensing the invisible barrier of energy surrounding them, emanating from Nathan.
The moment his feet left the wall, instead of falling to the ground, he and all the subordinates remained suspended mid-air, their bodies seamlessly following behind Nathan as if tied by an invisible thread.
While Stormir and the other powerful cultivators clashed with the demons near the center of the wall, Nathan moved toward the extreme right corner of the sentinel wall.
"The demons at the corner are only at the low-tier realm," Nathan informed them, his voice grave. "Our mission is to ensure that not a single one of those demons passes through the wall."
After a brief pause, he continued, "Even though they are weak, their sheer numbers and vitality can be life-threatening."
Nathan's sharp gaze turned toward Taranis as he muttered, "No matter who you are, on the battlefield I am your leader, so you must follow my commands."
"We understand, Platoon Leader!" the subordinates shouted in a loud, clear voice, Taranis included.
With that, Nathan and his group began descending toward the ground, where a horde of tens of thousands of demons was rushing forward from over a kilometre away.
But then the demons slowed, the creepy smiles vanishing from their faces as they identified Nathan and several of the subordinates behind him, who, unlike the Emperor's army, wore robes that clearly set them apart as disciples of the Thunderbane clan.
---
"What the fuck is going on!? Why are the Thunderbanes already here?" one of the demons muttered, nervousness clearly laced in his voice.
"The battle only started today. Which idiot offended the Thunderbanes?" another added.
"Hah! What are you afraid of?" a demon with grey skin and a horn longer than the rest declared. Judging by his appearance, he seemed to be the strongest among the horde. "These Thunderbanes always interfere whenever we are about to break through the walls. We were bound to fight them sooner or later. Isn't it better if we fight them tonight, while we are at our peak?"
At his words, the earlier nervousness gradually faded from the demons' faces as they focused on Nathan and the hundreds of subordinates standing behind him.
---
"I will take care of that grey demon," Nathan declared, his voice firm. "He is at the Demon General Realm. The rest are either at the Hellspawn Realm or the Abyss Walker Realm. All of you form teams of five and deal with the remaining demons. Spread out ten kilometres on both sides of me and do not venture deeper into the demon army, or you will be surrounded by their sheer numbers."
---
Just as humans and beasts followed separate cultivation paths with different realms, demons possessed their own cultivation system. Unlike humans or beasts, for whom purer Soulforce meant greater strength, demons fed on corrupted and impure Soulforce, as well as negative emotions. Their cultivation realms were as follows:
Imp Realm
Abyss Walker Realm
Hellspawn Realm
Demon General Realm
Demon Lord Realm
Archdemon Realm
Demon Sovereign
Abyss King
Primordial Demon
Since the entire battlefield was saturated with impure Soulforce and negative emotions such as pain, fear, and agony, it was an ideal place for demons to break through their realms. That was exactly what had been happening. Over the past thirty years, the stronger demons had increased their realms by several levels, while the weaker ones were slaughtered, drastically reducing their population.
---
After a brief pause, Nathan shouted, "Now, go!"
"Yes, Platoon Leader!" the subordinates replied, forming groups within seconds as they spread across the battlefield.
Strangely, most of the Thunderbane disciples avoided forming teams with Taranis, afraid of accidentally offending the Prince. In the end, they were all under Voltrex's authority. As a result, Taranis joined a group of four imperial soldiers.
Wasting no time as the demons rapidly closed in, Taranis and his group took position a few hundred metres away from Nathan.
"My name is Alex. Since I am the oldest among us and at the second level of the Awakened Sage Realm, I will take command of this temporary group," one of the soldiers declared.
"I have no objection, senior," the soldier beside him said.
"Nor do we," the other two added in unison. Naturally, none of them objected, as they were all imperial soldiers who knew each other well.
As for Taranis, he did not care who led the group, as long as he was not restricted. He nodded in agreement.
"Alright then," Alex said, a satisfied smile forming on his face.
"You two come with me to the front," he ordered the two soldiers who had first supported him. "You two cover our backs."
His gaze briefly swept over Taranis and the archer beside him.
Without asking for further input, as it was no longer necessary, Alex and his two subordinates rushed forward toward the horde of hundreds of incoming demons.
Weapons clashed, sparks erupted, and the roars of both demons and Alex's group echoed as each side tried to intimidate the other.
Alex, being at a mid-tier realm, easily cleaved through five demons with a single swing of his long spear, while his subordinates dealt with the ones charging from his left and right.
Four demons slipped past Alex's subordinates and reached their rear, attempting to surround them with sheer numbers. Before they could succeed, two arrows whistled through the air, piercing straight through the heads of two of the demons.
As for the remaining two, a bolt of golden lightning shot forward and struck them with a sharp jolt, subduing the demons without killing them.
