Today was just another boring day for Hai. Sitting at the receptionist desk, he sighed, "Why did Pa have to go and build our inn at such a hidden location?"
He shook his head in resignation. They really needed money. For the past few years, they had been saving, and now they were so close to reaching their goal—but now it actually felt so far away.
"Haaa, anyways I'll go do the usuals. I should probably be able to make three silvers today," Hai pondered. He was a very smart and creative lad. Using his resourcefulness, he started a small business of drawing portraits for people. Though it didn't bring much, it was enough to get by.
Ding!
Suddenly, the bell indicating entries rang out, startling Hai from his daze.
On seeing the person walking in, he felt uneasy and quite strange. The person was fully wrapped in bandages, with only his seven orifices and his lustrous silver-white hair being spared.
And this newcomer's eyes—they had a magnetic charm to them. The sapphire hue seemed to entrance him, making him fall into a daze.
Quickly shaking himself out of his little trance, he stood. "Welcome, young visitor. I go by the name Hai. May I know which service you require?"
Then the stranger's soothing voice rang out, "How much for a room?"
'Oh my! A customer finally!' Hai was very excited but still maintained professionalism. "We offer 1 gold coin a day, three square meals, and utilities included," he quickly chanted in a practiced manner.
But suddenly, he felt something was wrong!
No—it was as though the entire atmosphere took on a darker hue. Everything seemed wrong!
Then he noticed—the once blazing sapphire hue of the customer's eyes had been polluted by a twinge of sanguine.
Hai felt suffocated as the air grew chillier. Suddenly, the customer's arms began outstretching towards him slowly.
His body felt frozen. Time seemed to stop at this moment, and Hai realized it wasn't that he was frozen—it was that this stranger's arms were moving so fast his brain couldn't respond.
The fact that he could see it was merely a product of his fear factor.
And instinctively, he knew that the moment that hand landed, it would grace him with death!
He couldn't resist it! He couldn't fight it!
His heart raced and his skin crawled!
This feeling was something ingrained in his blood; akin to a lamb that found itself underneath a lion's paw. It was a feeling of a predator on prey.
Hai could only close his eyes, waiting for it to come.
"..."
But nothing happened. Mustering enough courage to open his eyes, he saw the customer's arm outstretched and opened. Within it were three gold coins.
The previous atmosphere had vanished. The man's eyes had reverted back to their usual hue, as though everything he just experienced was all an illusion.
"I'll be staying for three days. If I plan to extend my stay, I'll pay more then," the man spoke.
"I-I see… follow me then… let me take you… to your… room," Hai stuttered, the fear still fresh in his veins.
He quickly went ahead to direct Spark, ascending the steps, taking him to his designated room while faltering in his steps.
'That was close. I nearly lost control just now…' Spark thought, feeling guilty.
'It seemed I built a large amount of killing intent during my coma,' he pondered.
'Seeing I was out for three days, that's a given. But I didn't expect it to be so much. Was it because of the battle or the near-death experience I faced?'
Shaking his head, he concluded, 'Anyhow, I must avoid interaction with people before I take care of it.'
They finally arrived at a door labeled No.9.
"Esteemed guest, this is the room you will be residing at," Hai said while bowing. His arms outstretched—in them was a key.
Spark took it, opened the door, and just before he closed it, he instructed, "If you need to deliver food, just leave it by the door, knock, then leave."
"Yes sir, I'll do exactly as you say," Hai replied, nodding frantically. To him, this man was even more fearsome than demons of legends. No matter what he said, Hai would take it as law.
Seeing how frightened the boy was, Spark's expression softened. "You may go."
Needless to say, he didn't need to hear it twice. Hai quickly scrambled away.
Spark shook his head, glancing at his clenched fists. 'I guess I can only resort to doing some vigilante work. Hopefully I can get in good shape before the next time Guo visits.'
…
Meanwhile, back at Elder Wei's mansion…
"Are you telling me you believe he lost his memories for real?" Elder Wei questioned.
"Yes master. While I fed him information, I was attentive to his subtle expressions and unconscious display of emotions… With these, I concluded he's either a very good actor, or he's as he said—with no memories," Guo quickly surmised. Pausing for a bit, he added:
"And I tend to lean to the latter, as he truly never heard of the words 'Martial arts' and 'Essence weaving' till date."
Hearing Guo's report, Elder Wei slumped back in his chair, disappointed. "I originally hoped he could help us take care of Slader and his band… That guy keeps getting more and more bold. He even robbed Cai'er's carriage on her way back."
On hearing this, Guo was startled and said, "What? Is the young miss okay?"
Elder Wei sighed. "Thankfully, she was wearing a veil and he just asked for some fees and let them go. Cai'er is fine and unharmed."
Then suddenly, the elder's face became fierce. "But regardless, he dared rob Cai'er and did the same to several other of my caravans. The incurring loss is becoming too great…
We need to do something about him—and fast!"
Suddenly, the door to his office opened, and a fairy-like lady walked in.
She was an extremely beautiful-looking lady, with sword-shaped brows, clear crystal eyes, and pink thin lips. Her long slender legs took one step after the other in a pattern of grace, and her perfectly shaped hips swayed in rhythm.
"Cai'er! My darling, what do you need?" Elder Wei said in a doting manner. This was his first child and his only daughter.
Then a melodious voice rang out—one wonderful enough to make the toughest of men turn soft. "Father, I heard you brought back quite the guest… I couldn't help but get curious."
