Cultivation Chaos: Superheroes In The Realm Of Immorals

Chapter 31: The Essence Artifacts

"This is the armor-type artifact. It might not look like much now, but when it's donned, it unravels itself, fitting the body," Cai'er gestured toward a plain-looking bronze bracelet, dwelling in a cubicle of glass sitting on a platform.

She had taken Spark to her father's treasury—for him to have a look at the artifact and also to see her seriousness.

Truthfully speaking, the real reason she needed Spark's help was more than she let on…

There was something very important among the goods that Slade stole—something she had acquired by staking her life while in the immortal lands.

And the request to have Spark take her to Nightmare Paradise, though sincere as she would need to go there in the future, was still a diversion. Her main goal was this item, and hopefully Slade hadn't noticed anything special about it yet.

Meanwhile, Spark—who wasn't even paying attention to her—had his eyes roaming the entire treasury. The whole place was set almost like a museum.

With high platforms, shielding glass, and mysterious items lurking within.

"So are all of these also essence artifacts?" he voiced curiously.

'Don't tell me he's getting greedy,' Cai'er frowned. "Yes, they are—but they're all of a lower level compared to this," she answered once more, gesturing at the bronze bracelet before them.

Contrary to what she was thinking, Spark wasn't feeling greedy at all. Instead, he was more interested in the feeling he got the moment he stepped into the treasure room.

He had recently discovered that he could absorb energy contained in matter, and right now he felt an overwhelmingly high amount of energy from each and every one of these objects.

From his estimation, the weakest of these objects would at least grant him enough energy to form one-sixth of a star.

Which didn't seem much at first—but when you take into consideration that all the energy input of Spark's entire life was only able to form nine stars, you'd understand his surprise.

'So if I can get fifty-four of such items, I can reform my nine stars,' Spark made a rough calculation inwardly.

He couldn't help but have a thought: 'Wait—with my abilities, do I need to cultivate via conventional means? After all, unlike the others, my powers are practically limitless. As long as the energy input is enough, I can do anything.'

His eyes flickered with epiphany. 'I just need to master my output and reach Zenith. Maybe after that, I'll be strong enough to leave for the immortal lands.'

Spark immediately made up his mind on his plan. Previously, he had felt aimless after his abandonment.

What do I do next?

What path do I follow?

These silent questions had weighed at the back of his mind. But thankfully, now—after this little excursion—he knew what path to take. 'I'll cultivate the path most related to energy control.'

"So what do you think?" Cai'er questioned suddenly. She was unable to take his silent observation any longer.

Her father didn't even know they were here, and she would have to convince him about this whole plan later.

So if Spark had any funny ideas, she would be helpless to stop him.

Snapping out of his thoughts, Spark finally gave the bracelet a glance. The bronze item looked ancient, with arcane-looking runes etched across the whole thing, accompanied by ancient circuit-like patterns.

It looked standard and gave the feeling of being able to fit any wrist—big or small. And unlike the other items Spark had been observing so far, this one radiated no energy.

Giving the feeling of being ordinary—not in a bad way, but in a way that made one understand that the energy within it was more refined and more contained than the rest.

"Impressive… do I get to try it out now?" he questioned, intrigued by the high-level artifact—or more specifically, by its refined, clean, and almost undetectable energy.

Cai'er quickly shook her head. "No, we have to go see my father first. I brought you here so you could see what we'll be working with."

Spark just nodded and turned around, heading to exit the treasury. As simple as this action looked, he was quite reluctant to leave—but he was worried if he stayed any longer, he might just rob the place dry.

Cai'er silently followed behind. On getting out, they met Guo, who had been diligently laying in wait for the duo.

"Guo, lead the way to my father. We need to see him," she ordered.

Guo nodded and led them. This time, instead of an office, they arrived at a warehouse.

Spark's eyes twitched in annoyance at the sight that unraveled before them.

There was a long line of carriages in queue outside the warehouse, and inside, a familiar elder could be seen with a note and pen, taking notes as servants offloaded a carriage within.

Spark honestly couldn't imagine having to wait for this long line to be over before he could speak to the miser.

"Master, the young miss is here with the guest," Guo announced loudly. And sure enough, his announcement fell on deaf ears as the elder seemed too occupied by whatever he was doing.

Guo announced two more times—and it was the same…

Just when Spark was beginning to frown and about to suggest he leave and come back later, Cai'er spoke up.

No—actually, she didn't even speak. All she did was feign a cough. The moment her soft, delicate voice echoed through the warehouse, the elder's ears perked up like an antenna that had just caught signal.

He quickly flung the book and pen aside as he turned around, his face depicting a doting expression. "My Cai'er, how was your trip? Hope no one disturbed you? How did the meet go?"

The elder quickly threw a barrage of questions at her, while making sure his voice sounded pleasant. Stepping toward her, he put his arms on her shoulder as he scanned her from head to toe, as though worried she had been hurt—while treating the other two behind her as nonexistent.

Guo and Spark rolled their eyes at the disparity in treatment.

Smiling brightly, Cai'er responded, "It was alright." It was unknown which question she answered—or if this answer was for all of them.

The elder just nodded his head with a sheepish smile. "As long as my Cai'er is alright. What do you need? Just tell Father…" Elder Wei asked, beating his chest.

She just smiled. "Let's talk more privately, Father."

Nodding his head, he took her by the arm and walked out of the warehouse, heading for his office—while disregarding the other two the entire time.

If Cai'er hadn't turned around to signal Spark to follow, he would have been left standing there awkwardly. 'Tch… this old miser is getting on my nerves,' he cursed inwardly, but he still followed.

Meanwhile, it was already high noon. And right at this moment, outside Merchant Wei's mansion, royal guards silently filled the streets in disguise, trying to keep covert.

They were scattered among various buildings in the surroundings, but most of them were particularly gathered in a famous noodle spot just opposite the mansion.

If one looked closely, they might have noticed the three-headed dragon insignia on their armor, which signified their status as Dragon Claws—the personal army of the Yang Empire's crown prince, Yang Li.

"Captain, how long are we to wait for the target?" one of the subordinates questioned silently while sipping from a miso soup.

A man with rough beards and a bald head responded with a careless shrug. "How do you want me to know… All I know is that the target is really strong. You guys best be prepared—this one might be tough." Though he said that, the captain remained relaxed, playing the game of Go with his lieutenant.

"Yeah, it's true. I heard that our target this time is a high-level martial artist," the lieutenant said tauntingly.

The captain scoffed disdainfully. "Humph. High-level martial artist? We'll just have to see how strong he is when we face him… Ha! And you lost," the captain declared, placing his last piece on the board.
