In fact, Xia Ling could not be blamed for this.

She had gone through too much recently—Pei Ziheng’s cancer diagnosis, Li Feng holding her captive, Li Lei’s coma since his serious injury, the miscarriage… when she saw that Xia Moyan had entered the ward in his entirety, she heaved a huge sigh of relief. He was alive, and he was still in one piece; that was enough.

Xia Moyan knew exactly what she meant, and spoke to her gently, “When I fired the shot to protect Li Lei, Li Feng suddenly attacked me from the back. Fortunately, Pei Ziheng was there in time to stop him and I only had minor injuries.” He did not tell her that it was an almost-fatal gunshot wound.

Seeing that he appeared well and good, Xia Ling believed his words.

But, Pei Ziheng was there too?

She verbalized her thoughts. “Why haven’t I seen Pei Ziheng? Is… is he alright?”

Her voice shook as she asked him. She was genuinely afraid that Brother would tell her something untoward had happened to Pei Ziheng. As a cancer patient, every day was precious, and a mere few days to a normal person might mean life and death to them.

She subconsciously clenched her fists in fear.

Xia Moyan sounded even gentler now. “He postponed his surgery to save you. When he returned, he was running a high fever and went into a three-day coma. But don’t worry, he’s alright now and his tuberculous focus has shrunk significantly. His condition is stable now and he’s undergoing further treatment.”

Only then was she relieved.

It was so nice to know that Pei Ziheng was fine.

“He’s so silly,” she murmured. “He’s already so sick, why did he still come to save me?”

Xia Moyan said, “Li Feng was killed by him and Er Mao.”

He described the scene of Li Feng’s death briefly.

Xia Ling was a little dazed after hearing that.

Who would’ve thought that a ruthless, cold-hearted person like him would end up in such a sorry state? Till now, she still could not understand why Li Feng hated Li Lei so much. And if Li Lei woke up to find out that Li Feng was already dead, how would he feel? “Did he have any last words?” Xia Ling asked.

Xia Moyan shook his head. “Only Pei Ziheng would know.” When Li Feng and Pei Ziheng were conversing, Xia Moyan had already passed out. Everything he knew after that was told to him by someone else.

Xia Ling did not want to think about this further. She had enough on her plate to worry about.

She refocused the conversation on Li Lei. “I still want to see him. I won’t be able to feel relieved until he regains consciousness.” She looked at her mother and brother with a pleading expression.

Madam Xia frowned. “Silly girl, you need to take care of your own health.”

Xia Moyan was unhappy. “What for? If not for the Li family, would you have suffered so much? You’d better follow me back to the Xia household and recuperate there.”

Xia Ling shook her head stubbornly. “I want to see him!”

Madam Xia tried another method instead. “Mom won’t stop you from seeing him, but you’ll at least have to wait till you’re able to get off the bed and walk on your own. You have to nurse your own wounds first. When you’re better, Mom will accompany you to see him.”

Xia Ling wanted to look for Li Lei immediately, but she understood that her mother’s words made sense.

She stayed in her own ward obediently and recuperated, hoping that she’d be able to walk soon and visit Li Lei. Her cell phone had gone missing during the struggle with Li Feng, and she asked her mom for a new one to relieve her boredom. With that, her friends’ words of concern and comfort had been pouring in through calls and texts.

But Xia Ling still felt lonely.

The person she loved most still had not contacted her.

She looked at Li Lei’s handsome profile picture on WeChat and decided to record a voice message for him: [I’ve regained consciousness and am alright. Li Lei, you’ve got to be fine too. Wake up soon, you’ve got this.]

She pressed the send button.

That afternoon, the nurse came to change her drip bottle.

The wooden door was left ajar, and a commotion from outside could be heard—”Your daughter is human, and my grandson isn’t? Preceptor Xia, Madam Xia, what right do you have to stop me from entering? I want to see my granddaughter-in-law! Don’t go too far!”

Xia Ling recognized Old Master Li’s voice and turned to ask the nurse, “What’s going on outside?”

The nurse looked a bit confused and stuttered. “I-I will go and take a look.”

She changed the drip bag and rushed out of the room, closing the door behind her. Xia Ling waited for a good few minutes in bed but the nurse did not return. There was nothing she could hear behind the sturdy wooden door.

Frustration rose inside her.

At this point, her cell phone rang and she intuitively picked it up.

“Ye Xingling,” It was Old Master Li’s angry voice. “You’re awake and you’re not seeing my grandson?! Li Lei still isn’t out of the woods yet! I went to look for you, but your mom and brother actually stopped me! What sort of in-laws are you?! If something untoward happens to my grandson, I won’t let you off!” Old Master was losing rationality from his anger.

Xia Ling’s heart almost stopped. “What, Li Lei isn’t out of the woods yet?!”

Mom and Brother did not tell her that! They simply said that “his condition has stabilized and he’ll be conscious soon”. She didn’t even know things were this serious!

“Which ward is he in, I’m coming over right now!” Xia Ling asked while struggling to get off the bed. Just getting herself to sit upright was enough to drench her in cold sweat.

Old Master Li snorted unpleasantly and gave her his ward number.

All this time, Li Lei had been in the intensive care unit undergoing emergency treatment, which was why he wasn’t able to move into another ward even when Xia Moyan had moved to the one beside hers. The hospital had already issued two notices with regards to Li Lei’s critical condition, while Old Master Li and Su Tang hung around outside his ward day and night. Even Little Shaohui had cried a few times seeing his father, but what about Xia Ling? This granddaughter-in-law was nowhere to be found!

Old Master Li had attempted to contact Xia Ling a long time ago.

But Xia Ling had been in a coma for a while after her surgery. Following that, her family members had secured the entire VIP ward area and restricted access to any outsiders. If she had not sent a message to Li Lei on his phone, Old Master wouldn’t have been able to get her even now! He stormed to her ward the moment he received the message but was stopped by her family.

Old Master Li, who’d wanted to tell her off in her face, had no choice but to call her.

Xia Ling did not know that she’d had the wrong idea this whole time, but she figured out that her family simply wanted her to recuperate without worries. She was extremely anxious to see him now, but having just undergone surgery for her miscarriage, she was still very vulnerable. The moment she had her feet on the ground, she felt herself go weak and collapsed.
