In his room, Merlin leaned back casually while reading a book. Not long after, a small portal appeared beside him, and Lyserra's figure emerged from it.
She jumped onto his stomach and lay there lazily, rubbing her head against his chest.
Merlin closed his book and stroked her head.
"Are you done?" he asked.
"M-mm... I'm done," she replied lazily. "I'm exhausted. Don't wake me up."
After saying that, Lyserra closed her eyes and fell asleep.
Merlin smiled slightly as he continued to stroke her.
"Oh, right, the system," he called out. "Where's my reward?"
"[Ding! Congratulations, Master. You have completed the mission to retrieve the Royal Scepter of the Tharot family. Reward: 70,000 system points and 1x Pandora's Box have been added to your account.]"
Seeing that, Merlin couldn't help but nod in satisfaction. Since he had returned from the past, he hadn't claimed his reward at all.
He opened the system shop and saw that his system points were at 250,000, which was a lot.
After all, his system points had been at 80,000 before, all of which he had used to buy many body-strengthening and luck-enhancing potions.
Although it had already passed, thinking about it was still very painful.
"By the way, system, I want to open the Pandora's boxes. How do I do that?"
"[That's easy, Master. You just need to command me.]"
"Oh? That easy?" Merlin was surprised. "Then, please open the three Pandora's boxes, system."
He rubbed his hands together excitedly. The system said he had a chance to obtain items or skills, both of which were extremely valuable.
As for potions, well, he didn't need them right now. But if he wasn't mistaken, potions had the highest drop rate.
He wasn't sure whether he would get misfortune or good luck.
"[Ding! Opening Three Pandora's Boxes!]"
The systematic voice echoed in his mind.
A moment later, three silver boxes appeared and floated in front of Merlin.
Each box emitted a faint white aura that looked incredibly beautiful.
"[You can touch them one by one, and the reward will appear afterward. Remember, the Pandora's boxes come in three colors: green, blue, and red. The color determines how good the reward is.]"
Merlin fell deep into thought when he heard that.
For some reason, the Pandora's box system reminded him of the gacha system from the games in his previous world.
Taking a deep breath, Merlin touched the box on the right.
Buzz!
The box spun while releasing a bright white light.
Before long, the light dimmed and shifted into green.
'Green? Damn... my luck is really bad!' Merlin cursed silently.
Green was the worst color, while red was the best.
He still remembered increasing his luck with the potions he used before.
At first, he thought his luck boost was still there, or at least a little bit remained. If that were true, he should've gotten red.
Unexpectedly, however, his luck seemed to have faded, so he only got the green color.
"[Pfft! You're really unlucky, Master. Did you think those luck-enhancing potions would help? Too bad. I forgot to mention that boosting luck with potions has no effect. The system counts it as cheating, so I've optimized it,]" the system mocked.
Merlin rolled his eyes in annoyance. "Why didn't you tell me earlier?"
"[You didn't ask. How would I know?]"
His argument was instantly shut down, leaving Merlin speechless.
Ignoring the system, Merlin touched the box again, and a ball of light appeared before him.
"[Ding! Congratulations, Master. You have obtained a B-level healing potion!]"
Merlin felt annoyed and complained, "A B-level healing potion? System, you're terrible!"
"[Ahem! I had no part in this, Master. It all depends on your luck,]" the system replied sheepishly.
Merlin smiled mockingly, as if to say, "Do you think I'm stupid?"
Then he touched the next box. Just like before, the box emitted a bright white light.
A second later, the white light shifted into blue, and Merlin immediately laughed happily.
"Hahaha! Blue! There must be something good inside!"
Although it wasn't red, blue was still much better than green.
When he touched it again, the box trembled and exploded.
At the same time, the system's voice echoed once more.
"[Ding! Congratulations, Master. You have obtained an A-Level Disguise Potion!]"
"An A-Level Disguise Potion?" Merlin was surprised.
He quickly opened the potion's description.
Once he read it, he instantly understood. As the name suggested, this potion could transform him into someone else.
Amazingly, it would make him look exactly like the original, without any flaws at all.
Even if the real person appeared right in front of him, others wouldn't be able to tell them apart—not even those at the Fourth Core Spirit level.
However, the potion had one drawback: it didn't grant him the memories of the person he was impersonating.
He would still have to learn their nature, behavior, and habits on his own to copy them perfectly.
Even so, it was ideal for infiltrating enemy headquarters.
Merlin quickly opened the system shop and searched for the potion. Before long, he found it.
"50,000 system points for just one A-level potion?" Merlin gulped.
For comparison, an A-level Healing Potion was only priced at thirty to forty thousand system points.
Yet the disguise potion's price was much higher, showing how valuable it was.
His annoyance at getting another potion instantly vanished. At least this one was more useful than the previous one.
Merlin's gaze then locked onto the last box. He took a deep breath and prayed silently that he would get the red light.
As he touched it, the box emitted a bright white light once again.
'Gods, I beg you, red light!' He clasped his hands together as if praying.
He never believed in gods or anything like that, but ever since reincarnating into this world, he had begun to believe in their existence.
So, he sincerely begged the gods to grant his wish.
A few seconds later, the white light faded, and the color that appeared was neither green nor blue—but red.
"Red!" Merlin exclaimed in pure joy.
But then he remembered Lyserra and quickly covered his mouth with both hands.
Trying to contain his overflowing excitement, he touched the box with trembling fingers.
The box exploded, and the system's voice rang out in his mind.
"[Congratulations, Master. You have obtained the basic magic of the Lightning Spear.]"
"Basic magic?" Merlin's heart raced.
Coincidentally, he really was lacking in useful magic. The last time he obtained basic magic was after reaching the Eighth Spirit Core stage.
He immediately opened the description. Just as the name implied, it allowed him to summon lightning spears from the air.
Its power was extremely destructive, and more importantly, it would continue to grow as he grew stronger.
That meant once he reached the Seventh Spirit Core stage or higher, the magic would level up from basic to advanced, or even high level.
"I take back my words—my luck is actually amazing!"
Just as he was enjoying his happiness, a knock came from his bedroom door.
"Young Master, it's me, James. May I come in?"
