Sun Dasheng found the situation somewhat amusing. He reached out and made a grabbing motion in the air. Tian Xiwei got the hint in a second, her cheeks instantly turning pink, and she quickly turned her head away.
The two sisters were sitting on the sofa when Ding Muchen noticed something peculiar.
"Wei Wei, why are your cheeks red again?" she asked curiously.
Tian Xiwei stammered, "Maybe I didn't cover myself properly with the blanket last night, so I think I caught a cold."
"That won't do. I have some Cold Spirit Effervescent Powder at home. I'll go mix a packet for you," Ding Muchen said, getting up to boil water in the kitchen.
The man sitting next to Tian Xiwei stretched out a large hand and pulled her into his embrace like a small kitten.
"Well, well. Looks like the harmless little girl has learned how to lie," he teased.
"I have not! Let go of me. Muchen will be out any second, and she'll see us!" Tian Xiwei struggled in his embrace.
But his arm only tightened around her as he leaned in and whispered in her ear, "Let her see. If she does, I'll just tell her that it's you I like. How about that?"
"No way!" Tian Xiwei's rejection was sharp and decisive.
But inside, she felt elated.
Her face, however, showed only righteous indignation. "We can't let Muchen find out about us. I'm afraid it would hurt her."
"Fine. Your sisterly bond is so deep, which means I'm the one who suffers," Sun Dasheng said, feigning a heartbroken expression.
Tian Xiwei's heart softened at once. Gently wrapping her arms around his neck, she planted several kisses on his face. "I'm sorry. It's all my fault. I'm the one who's made things so awkward between the three of us. Can you please just bear with it for a little while? I'll make it up to you later."
Perhaps the kisses worked, because Sun Dasheng let her go.
"You said it. You'll make it up to me later. Don't go back on your word, okay?"
"Of course." Hearing noises from the kitchen, Tian Xiwei hurriedly wiped the lipstick marks from Sun Dasheng's face and then sat primly back in her original spot.
She accepted the medicine Ding Muchen handed her. "Thank you, Muchen."
Ding Muchen sat down beside her, glancing suspiciously at the man in the distance before smiling at Tian Xiwei. "No need to thank me. Drink it while it's hot; it works best that way."
"You might feel a bit sleepy after drinking it. If you want to sleep, just take a nap here.
"A nap will probably make you feel much better when you wake up."
"Mhm." Tian Xiwei gulped down the medicine and set the cup on the coffee table.
The Cold Spirit Effervescent Powder must have really had a sedative in it, because it wasn't long before Tian Xiwei felt drowsy enough to fall asleep.
"Go and sleep in the bed," Ding Muchen said, leading her to the room. The "bedroom" was actually just an alcove, with a curtain separating the bed from the living room.
After settling her sister in, Ding Muchen returned to the living room, where she saw the man engrossed in a game.
She walked over, nestled into his arms, and asked softly, "What was really going on just now?"
Apparently, what she had witnessed at the door hadn't faded from her mind at all. She had simply buried her suspicion, waiting for the right moment to ask.
"What do you mean, 'what was going on'?" Sun Dasheng deftly played dumb.
Ding Muchen snatched the phone from his hand and asked sourly, "Still trying to play dumb with me? Why were you holding Wei Wei at the door earlier?
"Do you two have something going on that I don't know about?"
She wasn't wrong. A woman's sixth sense is scarily accurate!
Of course, Sun Dasheng had no intention of admitting it. He gave Ding Muchen a swat on the rear. "Listen to yourself. How many times have I even met Tian Xiwei? Hasn't it always been right under your nose? How could there possibly be something going on between us that you don't know about?"
"That's true," Ding Muchen nodded.
"You women, whether you're smart or silly, always love to overthink things. You imagine all sorts of nonsense, and that affects our relationship, you know."
Sun Dasheng feigned seriousness, his face becoming stern.
Ding Muchen's heart skipped a beat. Had she outsmarted herself? It seemed she really was overthinking things and being too sensitive. She began to reflect on it.
When did I become so sensitive? It must have started back when I met Liu Qianqian, right? Before that, I was always the go-with-the-flow type, the very definition of unbothered. But ever since that woman started showing up time and again, flaunting herself like a peacock in heat, I've felt a sense of crisis.
I never thought I'd turn this newfound sensitivity on my own best friend before even using it on Liu Qianqian. I really shouldn't have done that.
She apologized softly, "Dasheng... I was wrong today. I'm sorry."
A woman who knows when to yield is really something else. Of course, he had already forgiven her in his heart. But he couldn't let her off the hook that easily. If forgiveness came so readily, she wouldn't treasure it. This kind of thing would just happen again and again.
So his face remained unyielding as he said, "If saying sorry was enough, what would we need the police for?"
Huh?
Ding Muchen's face was a picture of confusion.
But she quickly caught on and let out a snort of laughter. "Wow! Are you kidding me? That's an old line from 'Meteor Garden' from over twenty years ago, and you're still using it?"
Realizing he was just joking with her, Ding Muchen relaxed considerably. She knew he was just looking for a graceful way to drop the subject.
So she looked at him affectionately, placing her hand on his waistband. "Words of apology lack sincerity, but if I take action with my lips, that should be sincere enough, right?"
"Depends on your performance," Sun Dasheng replied, still lying there with feigned arrogance.
