Shuluotang is the name of a Chinese medicine massage shop, and it's where Lin Miao works.
The owner here, Shu Xingfa, suffers from a relatively rare hereditary disease, retinitis pigmentosa. He had night blindness early on, and as he ages, his vision becomes weaker, eventually leading to blindness.
When Shu Xingfa was young and diagnosed with his condition, upon realizing it was irreversible, he put great effort into learning Chinese medicine massage.
After twenty years of hard work, he, now already blind, became a masseur with some reputation, and he took on more than a dozen apprentices.
Lin Miao initially apprenticed largely due to her unfortunate background, along with the advocacy of some kind-hearted people.
After years of diligent and determined efforts, Lin Miao gained Shu Xingfa's approval, learned quite a bit of real skills, and acquired a separate massage room in Shuluotang.
The rumbling of thunder and the sound of raindrops blown onto the window occasionally infiltrated the fourteen or fifteen-square-meter massage room.
Lin Miao rubbed her sore wrist and softly said, "Mr. Li, the massage is over, you can get up now."
"That felt so good...oh!"
With this involuntary groan, a man in his thirties got up from the massage bed, occasionally moving his body.
"Miaomiao, your skills are becoming more and more excellent, comparable to Master Shu."
The man closed his eyes, reminiscing, "With your massage, I feel refreshed, and the accumulated stress and fatigue of the past few days are completely gone!"
Lin Miao smiled faintly and humbly said, "My skills don't compare to Master, not even close to the senior apprentices. It's mainly because regular customers like Mr. Li look after me without minding my clumsiness!"
"So humble!"
The man smiled warmly, looked at Lin Miao, and his eyes suddenly lit up, saying, "Miaomiao, every time I see you these days, I clearly feel you've become much more beautiful than before."
"What cosmetics are you using? I'll buy a set too to please my old woman at home!"
Lin Miao touched her face and laughed, "I didn't use any cosmetics, just some herbal medicine my brother got me to adjust my health."
"Oh, what kind of herbal medicine? It's so effective, where did you get it?" The man asked very interested.
"It's from that Jian'an Hall in Binhai."
Lin Miao's external changes are not visible to herself, but others see them. More than one regular female customer was surprised by her radiant appearance and inquired about her secret.
The internal changes, Lin Miao feels personally—her night sweats have stopped for some time, and her appetite has improved significantly.
She naturally knows that these changes originate from the herbal medicine soup Lin Jie gave her to drink.
After inquiring, Lin Miao found out that the herbal medicine soup came from the renowned Jian'an Hall, a traditional old brand of Chinese medicine clinic in Binhai City.
That was what Lin Jie told her after inquiring with Li Ting.
However, even Lin Jie himself didn't know that the herbal medicine soup they drank, due to the rarity of the ingredients and the complexity of the brewing process, was not comparable to the few tonic medicines sold publicly by Jian'an Hall.
During this period, Jian'an Hall also gained some business thanks to Lin Miao's testimonial.
The man nodded and said, "Oh, an old brand of Chinese medicine clinic is indeed trustworthy!"
Just then, a rolling thunder seemed to graze past the window, roaring loudly as if it exploded in the ear, startling Lin Miao into a shiver, her body shrinking uncontrollably.
Seeing this, the man smiled knowingly and said, "Scared? You're also due to get off work. It's hard to get a cab on a rainy day. How about I drive you home?"
"Thanks for the kind offer, but no need!"
Lin Miao's smile was about to spill over as she happily said, "My brother will come and pick me up soon."
Hearing this from Lin Miao, the man didn't say much more, left the massage room to the changing room to change clothes, while Lin Miao hummed a popular tune while tidying up the massage room.
Twenty minutes later, Lin Miao appeared in the front hall of Shuluotang.
As soon as she arrived, she noticed that familiar and comforting shadow.
"Brother!" Lin Miao ran over with a joyous smile.
Lin Jie led her by the hand, said goodbye to a few people in the shop, and then, with an umbrella, went to the MINI car parked by the roadside and got in.
This car had been transferred to Lin Jie's name for two weeks now, and its greatest use was picking up and dropping off Lin Miao to and from work, as well as facilitating his own trips to the gym.
Lin Miao quickly fastened her seat belt, turned her head and coyly asked, "Brother, did you bring me snacks again this time? I'm so hungry!"
Already driving, Lin Jie took out a thin paper-like folded snack from the storage compartment, handed it to her, and smiled, "Try this!"
"What is this?"
Lin Miao touched it, the surface a bit rough, then sniffed it lightly, detecting a grainy scent but unable to discern what kind of delicacy it was.
Trusting Lin Jie, she put it directly into her mouth to taste.
After trying for a while, Lin Miao couldn't bite off a piece, and she said disappointedly, "Brother, I can't chew it!"
Lin Jie laughed heartily and said, "This is a famous specialty from the Yimeng Mountain Area, pancake!"
"I told you before that the baby born with its heart outside its body had undergone two major surgeries at the Affiliated Hospital and has now been moved out of the intensive care unit, considered recovered!"
"Today, the child's parents specially sent some local specialties. The pancake you're eating is said to be made with millet and soybeans, very tough, even I can't bite it!"
Saying this, he handed her another pancake and said, "This one seems to be made of rice, more crisp, easy to chew!"
This is relative, as Lin Miao struggled to eat for a while and eventually gave up, asking, "My jaw is sore, brother, is there anything else to eat?"
Lin Jie handed her a big apple he found and said, "Eat some fruit, we'll have dinner once we get home."
On rainy days, Lin Jie couldn't drive the car too fast, taking about ten minutes longer than usual to return to the neighborhood.
Just as they entered the neighborhood, Lin Jie had to slow down to a crawling speed.
In front of the car, in the middle of the road, a woman wearing a pink short skirt sleepwear, holding an umbrella, leisurely strolled.
Due to many vehicles parked along the roadside, it was very difficult to pass on the narrow road, and this woman stubbornly walked in the middle of the road, making it impossible for Lin Jie to pass her.
What made Lin Jie even more annoyed was that flashing the high beams several times did no good; it seemed this woman deliberately blocked his car.
Disputes and conflicts among neighbors in a neighborhood are inevitable, but encountering someone so disgraceful was a first for Lin Jie.
Lin Miao heard the sound of Lin Jie grinding his molars and asked, "Brother, what's happening? Why is the car moving so slowly?"
"There's a nutcase blocking the road ahead!"
Just as Lin Jie was about to pull over and reason with the person ahead, a motorcycle came speeding from behind.
The helmeted motorcycle rider, while overtaking from the left, even gave Lin Jie the middle finger...
Lin Jie barely had time to react when the rider, just turned his head, discovered the woman in the middle of the road with the umbrella!
With close proximity and the motorcycle moving at a somewhat fast speed, in a panic, the rider swerved, the motorcycle tipped over, and it slid across the ground, directly skidding and knocking the umbrella-holding woman down!
The woman with the umbrella rolled several times in the rain before stopping, naturally losing her umbrella.
Lying on the ground, she was already soaked, but suddenly she flipped over, sitting in the rainwater!
She seemed stunned by the fall, looked around blankly, then saw the blood flowing from her arm and suddenly uttered a scream that pierced the clouds: "Ah..."
