Chapter 73: Disappointments with Spending

"Alright... I think that should do it... what do you think, Syl'Vyr?" I ask, looking at the outfit I made for Syl'Vyr. It's a very simple piece that only covers the essentials, but it's the best I could do using just tiger pelts and no sewing materials.

The top only covers her chest, but since her breasts are so large, her stomach down to her navel is exposed. The skirt doesn't even come close to her knees, so it's kinda short, but it covers things well enough.

In the end, she looks like a wild girl, the type born in the stone age who wears rustic clothes. I obviously tried my best with the outfit, but it's really hard without a needle and thread.

"It's great, Evelyn-chan," she says, opening her hands and trying to move her arms to see how the clothes behave. I look over at Eve, who gives a nod of approval as well.

"The quality is higher than I expected. Your talent is greater than I expected," she says while bringing her hands together and starting to bend her body completely forward, sticking her butt up in an extremely flexible pose.

Her back was perfectly aligned at an angle that would be painful for a human to maintain, but to me, it just looked way too perverted to be doing in that skirt.

"W-Well, thank you for the compliment..." I politely thank her while she stretches a bit more.

'Did I do the right thing by making a mage from a beastman race?' They are a rougher race, and I know that. Maybe those traits, even if just slightly, were passed on to Syl'Vyr, making her a little different from the image I had of a mage.

She gives off more the image of a warrior who would use a spear, rather than a studious girl who likes books and magic.

'Okay, okay, okay, no judging by appearance...' Actually, her personality has an upside; in a fight, she won't be a coward. Besides, I think it suits her body well.

And when she's wearing a real mage's robe, part of that rough image she projects will disappear, and she'll seem more like a bold, provocative older sister who likes to sleep on the couch.

"Syl'Vyr, I'm afraid I can't get you a staff or a wand or any other relic a mage uses to channel more magic, so you'll have to go without for now, is that okay?" I ask, and she promptly nods.

'...' I stare at her breasts, wondering how the hell they defy gravity like that.

"Evelyn-chan, I don't know much about where we are or what we're going to do. Could you update me? I only know the very, very basics of the situation, and that might be a problem," Syl'Vyr asks, raising her hand in a flashy way.

"We... are exploring a dungeon. Currently, I... OH MY GOD!!!" I shout in alarm, interrupting my own explanation.

"I totally forgot that there's someone injured and maybe even dead in this dungeon!! We need to go find this person!" I say urgently while Syl'Vyr tilts her head thoughtfully.

"I think I can help with that, Evelyn-chan," she readily offers with a smile. I let out a sigh of relief that she can already help even though she was just created.

'Fortunately, forming bonds with my puppet is instant.' Perfect for someone like me, a former shut-in who only lived in her room. Building relationships from scratch seems so... complicated.

With my puppets, it's instant. The relationship I define for them is what we'll have from the start, without needing to spend a lot of time forming bonds.

"How?" I ask, suddenly realizing something. The system only shows the 5 main personality traits, but not the rest. That's why when I created Eve and Syl'Vyr, I didn't really think about the exact personality they should have, I just thought about the initial traits.

'Maybe that's why Syl'Vyr is so strange in her behavior, even being kinda perverted, and Eve is so overprotective,' I rationalize as Syl'Vyr approaches.

"How are you going to find people here in the dungeon, Syl'Vyr?" I ask, interested, waiting eagerly to see some magic. Honestly, since I reincarnated, I haven't seen much magic.

I mean, I've used magic, but those classic spells and magical attacks you see in manga and games aren't things I've witnessed yet. After all, Eve is a swordswoman, and most monsters also only attack hand-to-hand.

"I'm going to... smell. From what I understood, the tiger was fighting this person, so the tiger's fur should have the scent I need to find them," she says, picking up a piece of the fur and starting to sniff it.

"..." I look at her with pure disappointment. Not because she's doing it, but because of the method. I was sure she would use magic to track the person and I'd get to see an interesting magic display.

'Dammit, I was tricked by my own expectations!!' She is from a beastman race; it makes sense to find something by smell. I let out a sigh as Syl'Vyr starts walking in an apparently random direction.

"Evelyn-chan, I smell something that's neither you, nor Eve, nor the tiger. It seems to be that way," she points in the direction that I feel is the way down to the next floor.

"Great! Then let's go! Also, Syl'Vyr, stay alert for enemies and surprise attacks! You need to warn us about that!" I say seriously, not wanting to be caught off guard. Eve is pretty good at detecting enemies, but her main focus is detecting them just before they attack.

Which greatly reduces its usefulness, since finding enemies when they're about to launch a surprise attack only allows us to defend, not to detect the enemy first.

"Understood, Evelyn-chan! I'll be very careful!" she says, her tail wagging excitedly. Soon, Eve and I start to follow her as she moves forward, occasionally stopping to sniff the tiger pelt again.

Honestly, I think she's smelling the blood. The tiger was badly wounded, and considering its strength, it probably injured its target quite a bit, thus picking up the scent of their blood.

Of course, I'm not sure what I'm talking about; it's just a deduction that the tiger was summoned to kill someone, since summons of that type aren't usually just left in a dungeon.

That's actually a crime. Leaving your summons in places like dungeons, the city, or anywhere else, and having the summon start killing people, can even carry the death penalty.

Besides, summons aren't usually abandoned unless the person who summoned them really wants to use them for something criminal and doesn't want to be involved.

Or if the user died. Although many summons disappear if the user dies, some can remain, but that probably can't be it, since on the current floors, no monster would have wounded that tiger like that.

And as expected, Syl'Vyr arrives at the descent to the next floor and continues forward, sniffing the tiger fur again and going down the stairs.

On the way, we encounter some monsters, but Eve, with her new electric ability, easily defeats them without even using her sword. After about two hours of walking, Syl'Vyr stops near a clearing in the swamp.

"Evelyn-chan! My first mission since I was created is now... officially complete!! I smell blood. Someone is over there in that clearing! And they're injured! But I also smell fresh blood, so they might be alive!" Syl'Vyr says, her tail wagging happily.

I walk up to her and pat her head on the space between her ears, which lower to receive the affection. Her tail moves with extreme happiness as I realize making her happy is easy.

'That's good... I was worried I'd have to reward her... I-I mean, it's not like I see her as a dog that needs a treat for everything it does...' I gulp, maybe admitting a little that I was seeing Syl'Vyr in a more animalistic way.

"Very good! Thank you for your help, Syl'Vyr," I say with a mix of surprise and a desire to not think too much about how I see Syl'Vyr. She really found someone by scent with surprising ease. Without wanting to humiliate her, it's like having a sniffer dog on the team.

'Oh... crap... now that I think about it... how expensive is it going to be to have her on the team?' I'm screwed. The cost to add Eve to the team was almost completely cut because I put her in a humiliating position.

'It will... probably... s-she won't mind, right?' I'll probably have to list Syl'Vyr as "group mascot" just like Eve. I don't have the money to register her as a normal team member.

'W-Well, Syl'Vyr will just have to accept it... it's all I can do.' I need to register her too. It turns out that going on missions or into dungeons with unregistered team members is a serious offense.

Since this could be done to commit crimes and have alibis of innocence that would affect any investigation. So, even though this first adventure won't have problems, if Syl'Vyr helps without being registered next time, I could face complications.

'I can't afford a fine!! Damn capitalism and stupid rules!!' It's ridiculous. The guild forces us to register members or they'll fine us, but they charge abusive fees to register members for the team.

'It's why so many adventurers prefer not to form real groups.' There are two types of "groups." There are mission groups, where people get together to do missions, but these usually don't have many rules, fair administration, or guild support for important matters.

And then there are "official" groups, which are groups registered with the guild. Groups just for missions have no benefits, and complicated things can happen, even though creating them is free.

Official groups, on the other hand, have certain protections, benefits, monetary bonuses, respect, among other things. That's why I created an official group with a crest and everything, precisely to get the benefits. But now the price of registering each member is finally weighing heavy on my wallet.

And the weight is so high that I'm forced to give my group members humiliating positions, which will be super embarrassing in the future. Imagine people asking about each member's role in the group.

'Ahhh!! This is so ridiculous! I'm practically paying for the group's own benefits! Not to mention the humiliation! If they find out I registered all my group members as mascots, they'll think I'm some kind of nymphomaniac pervert!' The future looks dark.

Maybe I made a huge mistake creating an official team. Since the puppets are mine, maybe I didn't need to register them with the team, although I'd still have to sign a bunch of papers explaining what Eve is.

And I'd still have to pay to register them with the guild, which would again be expensive. This fills me with rage. The universe is obviously conspiring against me! Just because I'm a puppeteer, I have no choice but to pay through the nose for everything.

"Syl'Vyr, Eve, let's go! Before I have a fit and collapse on the ground from sheer anger!" I say, leaving the two of them confused. They can't even imagine the whirlwind of random thoughts swirling around in my head.
