The Smiling Death

Chapter 197: New Information

He tried to search for anything he could find.

But the result was not much different. He checked the first one and again, nothing.

Currently, he was checking out the last one.

It was in the same condition as the others.

Seriously. Shouldn't there have been a diary? Notes?… In most novels, the MC always finds some information in such places.

It was true. Novels from his past world always had secret realms and hidden places where the protagonist found some precious treasure. If not treasure, then at least some notes about the place.

Even the novels of this world followed the same kind of setting.

But here… Amon didn't find a single thing.

How could one's luck be so bad?

Yet, he continued.

At the end of the hall was another door. Amon strode toward it, not expecting much.

Truthfully, there were so many rooms and basements in all six of those buildings. But all of them were empty, dirty, and old.

As Amon pushed open the door, another room came into view.

Though it was not empty.

Against one wall stood an old wooden desk.

Amon raised his brow in surprise.

If he had found anything or any object in this whole place, it was a single bed, where he had slept last night.

Now, he had found a desk.

"That's unexpected," Amon muttered.

He observed the room and moved toward the desk.

It was a small study desk, with some drawers attached to it.

Amon slid them open and looked inside.

Nothing.

After a while, he understood. There was nothing of worth here.

"Such a waste of time. I should have just gone to the forest. At least that's more interesting…" Amon shook his head.

Just when he was about to turn around, a thought came to him.

Should I check under the desk?… Well, there must be nothing… but still, it's not like it will take much of my time.

Amon knelt down and bent his back.

His eyes searched for anything.

Under the desk were just pebble stones and dust. Nothing.

The dark eyes of Amon widened. He immediately narrowed them, focusing.

There, between the small stones… a circular—no, not quite a circle. Rather something like a page crumpled into a round shape.

"That—that's it! Fuck! Finally."

Amon stretched out his hand and pulled it out.

He got to his feet and instantly opened the crumpled page.

The page looked yellow in color. It was thick. For some reason, it didn't look like an ordinary page.

The reason? Well, because it was in perfect condition.

Only dirty and a little crumpled. There was not a single torn edge on it.

"Heheh~ I found it!" Even if it was just one page, Amon had at least found something here.

If that wasn't enough, the words written on it were in a language he knew.

Amon chuckled.

"Let's read."

His eyes fell on the first words.

12th day of the 8th month, Year 1846. Fourth Era

Hah… what a truly exhausting day.

Still, I suppose it is not a serious problem. Now

Just a few days ago, the war finally came to an end. A war so chaotic and brutal that even now, when I close my eyes, fragments of it return to haunt me. Blood, screams, collapsing lands. Everything blended into madness. Yet, despite all of that, we fulfilled our role. We did what was required of us. On our side, the objectives were achieved exactly as planned.

According to my leader's decision, our next course of action has already been set.

We are to go underground.

Not for a few years or even for decades, but for thousands of years.

We will erase ourselves from the surface of history. Hide from the eyes of the world. From kingdoms, empires, scholars. The organization will no longer act openly. Instead, we will exist only in the shadows. Unseen, unheard, and forgotten.

Our true duty will resume in the later part of the Fifth Era.

Thinking about it makes my head ache.

Will I even be alive by then?

To survive until that era… no, to even have a chance of seeing it, I must reach the peak. At the very least, the Seventh Rank. Anything below that is meaningless when time itself becomes the enemy. But can Mythborns… can they even live for thousands of years? I don't know.

Anyways, me, all my comrades, and even our boss our leader will go underground, but our work does not end. On the contrary, it will become far more dangerous. From the shadows, we must continue strengthening the organization, expanding its roots silently. Even if, in the distant future, many of us no longer exist, the organization must endure.

Tch… I truly wish I could be alive in the Fifth Era.

But can any of us really survive for thousands of years?

Today, we are finally leaving this base.

This place… it is a land filled with secrets. We have already extracted everything of value from it knowledge, artifacts, and truths that should never have existed in the first place. A mysterious and terrifying place, one that nearly cost me my sanity more than once.

I have had horrifying experiences here.

Experiences I do not wish to remember.

This place will forever give me nightmares.

In a way, I am relieved that we are abandoning it. Truly relieved. I never wish to set foot here again.

By tonight, we will erase all traces of our presence. Every room will be cleaned. Every mark removed. Not a single clue will be left behind.

Though even if we failed to clean up properly… it is not like anyone would be capable of uncovering the truth about us anyway—

---

Amon frowned.

Because that was it. It was only written up to the word anyway.

There was still space on the page to write more… but it stopped in the middle.

"Did he tear the page and crumple it… then throw it on the ground? But why? Did something happen while he was writing this?"

Though there was hardly any useful information on this page for Amon,

what he wanted was anything related to this place.

Still, he got to know one thing about this unknown place.

It was mysterious and horrifying. Terrible. Dangerous.

Amon rubbed his temples.

"So this was actually a base of some organization… but damn, it was from the Fourth Era."
