The Smiling Death

Chapter 282: Ready to face anything

Amon sat in the darkness. The world outside the tree felt distant now, muted, as if separated by an invisible wall.

Inside the hollow trunk, silence pressed in from every direction, thick and suffocating. Only the faint sound of his own breathing reminded him that he was still alive.

In front of him, laid carefully on the cold ground, were all the things he had left. His dark eyes observed them.

His sword rested at the center, its blade stained with dried blood. Beside it lay the hatchet, its edge chipped but deadly, shadows still faintly clinging to it as if unwilling to leave.

Two daggers were placed near it. Light, balanced, meant for quick kills. A normal knife lay slightly apart, worn and simple, but reliable.

To the side were three grenades. Demon-made. Heavy. Dangerous. He had used them while running away from the demon base. He remembered throwing them at tents, and how they caused huge explosions. He had kept a few with him for the future.

These grenades were not normal level, like the ones Amon had used before. They were far more explosive. At least strong enough to injure a Mana Initiate and slightly affect even Master-rank individuals.

Now, looking at them, he realized they were the only tools he had that could be even a little useful against those two.

But again, he had no idea how strong those two were. If they were Master rank, he might not have a chance. But if they were above Master rank, then he was dead.

And that realization made his chest tighten. "That's it…" Amon muttered softly.

This was everything he had. He had no reinforcements. No backup. No miracles waiting to save him.

Just a battered body, a dying tree, and two demon commanders walking calmly toward this place.

Amon stared at the weapons for a long moment. His expression was calm, almost blank, but inside his thoughts were sharp and restless. He knew the truth.

Even with all of this… it wasn't enough. Not against demons like them. Not when he didn't know anything about them.

The difference in power was obvious. He had barely survived Zareth. Those two outside were on a completely different level.

Yet… he didn't feel regret. He didn't feel any fear. He was actually becoming more crazy.

Amon gazed at the deep hollow pit, which seemed like an abyss.

'Is there a way I can make them fall inside…? If they fall… there's no way they can survive.'

A huge, creepy smile bloomed on his face. He was actually getting excited to kill someone.

Slowly, he reached forward.

One by one, he picked up the weapons and stored them back into his storage ring. The hatchet disappeared. Then the daggers. Then the knife. Finally, the grenades vanished as well, sealed away in silence.

When he was done, only two things remained.

His sword, held firmly in his right hand.

And the lighter, in his left, its small flame flickering weakly, pushing back just a little of the surrounding darkness.

Amon stood up slowly, muscles aching, joints protesting. He leaned slightly against the inner wall of the tree for support, then straightened himself.

The faint orange light from the lighter danced across the bark, casting twisted shadows that moved unnaturally, as if alive.

His grip tightened around the sword.

"I don't have much," he whispered to himself, voice barely audible. "But this will have to be enough."

Amon walked toward the edge of the cliff where the hole started. He looked back. The tunnel leading outside was straight behind him, only two meters away.

Amon nodded and took a few steps back. He lifted the sword in a vertical position above his head with one hand, while the other held the lighter.

Then he created darkness with his mana. It covered the sword's blade. Amon gripped it tightly and brought it down in a vertical slash.

BOOM!

The dark slash met the dark wooden and soil-covered surface. Cracks formed across it as soil particles scattered in every direction.

Amon didn't stop. He continued striking the same spot and its surroundings multiple times.

Crack!

BOOM!

Then he stepped back onto a surface that was still intact. He had cracked more than a meter-long section of the ground.

The area around a meter in size from the tunnel was weakened. Amon knelt down and placed one grenade inside the crack.

His plan was simple.

Hide on the left side, where there was more of an edge. Wait for the two demons to come out of the tunnel. They would walk straight after entering this place. When they stood on the cracked surface, Amon would throw a grenade near their feet.

It would explode, and at the same time, the hidden grenade would also detonate.

That would destroy the surface beneath them, causing the two demons to fall into the huge hole inside the tree.

Of course, the plan might not even have a ten percent chance of success. If it failed… for some reason… Amon thought about jumping into the pit himself.

As much as he felt chills from the hollow abyss, he also felt some familiarity. Some closeness to it. Unlike the feeling he had toward the upper side.

Now the preparations were done.

There were paths on both the right and left sides of the tunnel. The right one led upward, but Amon didn't choose it. Both were narrow paths. One small mistake while walking and he would fall.

Amon went to the left one, moving about ten meters away. He lay down on his front and switched off the lighter.

Darkness returned everywhere. Everything was pitch black. There, Amon remained lying, waiting for the demons to come.

Outside, somewhere beyond the massive roots and blackened bark, two powerful demons continued their approach.

Inside the tree, in the heart of darkness, Amon waited. He waited to hunt two more demons. He waited to bring death to them.

And for that, his heart raced with excitement, forgetting about the vile place he was currently in.

Amon was ready to face anything. Whatever came to him now.
