The Gourmet Innkeeper: Cooking Monsters in a Fantasy World

Chapter 186: The Night Before Departure

At some point, the topic ended with how people became adventurers, with some people bragging a lot.

"You don't know! I travelled all the way from the safe zones to the edge! At fifteen! I'm an adventurer by blood!"

Victor looked at the chaos on one side and shook his head. Since they were on the topic, he looked at Katton. "Those traders were really brave to mess with you."

"They wouldn't if they didn't have backing," the halfkin said. "They are probably hoping to awaken a beastkin after procreating enough."

After all, if there was enough beastkin blood in a child, they could show the qualities of a pureblood. Unlike the purebloods born in beastkin territories, these would be easier to control.

"Beastkin are really powerful physically, and they could also take animal forms and get the advantages of those," Katton said. "However, there was also a portion of beastkin with special abilities, too."

"Like what?"

"For example, Katnia's skill is defence, yes? Think of that, but many, many times more effective and longer, perhaps the entire duration of the fight, with minimal mana use."

"My knowledge about others is limited to what we see and what the Elders have taught us, however."

Beastkin were not capable of making large settlements. If they had lived in villages before, they were probably quite isolated, and news travelled very slowly in their area.

Finn then looked at the halfkins. "I'm sure some of you have a lot of tasks at hand."

Katton and the others nodded.

If they went back to their elders and reported this, then there would definitely be an investigation that'd be held. At the very least, the chances of it happening again would be significantly reduced.

Speaking of this, Beastkin did not have a King. Rather, they were led by a group of Elders representing some of the more powerful variations. The world's name was different, but roughly, they translated to Lions, Bears, Tigers, Eagle, Snake, and Fox.

Anyway, they would make sure that those merchant and mercenary groups were found and would pay the price. After all, those who went to the inn were only a small portion of that group. Similarly, the three of them were also a small portion of the kin kidnapped. To find them, however, they'd need a lot more influence.

It was why they stayed here despite all the things they had to do. They were hoping to get the help of the adventurer guild, too.

The chatters continued on, with some people even started dancing with music and songs they were singing themselves. Finn did not join but he did laugh a lot at their antics, just enjoying himself.

On Earth, he didn't remember being in a party that was simply… wholesome and fun. He had been dragged to a few, but they were mostly for networking purposes, and especially after he gained some minor fame.

All of those just felt nauseating. This was really refreshing.

Finn was careful with his alcohol intake. He had strong tolerance not only as a chef, but probably also due to his [Strong Stomach] passive.

He still did feel a bit woozy after a few bottles, though, but it was fun!

At some point, people started to go to bed, though most of them basically chattered until they passed out either in the living room or by the campfire. Someone almost singed his hair, and fortunately, Durgan managed to pull them by the feet far enough from the fire.

Well, at least those who weren't able to secure rooms. After all, the rooms were too expensive not to use!

The fortified folks helped arrange the rest of the unconscious folk, especially those who passed out outside. Some who could be squeezed into the room beds were squeezed there, while the rest were lined up on the carpet, covered by one of Ranran's blankets made of beast skin.

Finn also helped out, and he watched as the activity finally died down, with everyone, including staff members, finally heading to rest.

He smiled, feeling melancholic. Who'd have thought he'd party this hard in this world? He never would've been able to guess it.

Anyway, to sober himself up, he drank a nice tea of sunberry leaves with silverscent flower.

The silverscent was one of the new plants brought to him by the adventurers. Although he had mentioned some plants to get from them, they were also free to sell him new ones. Of course, how much it would be valued depended on how useful the plants would be for him.

This one was found near where they found the thornvines, though at higher altitudes. It had a silvery-purple flower that reminded him of a certain elf. It so happened that when crushed, they released a lovely, relaxing scent that was a great mix with his usual tea.

He settled on one of the exterior chairs. There were outdoor lights that were set on the outer walls, and he set them up to maximum by default at night. Because Pang ate a toughened core, he didn't have to save up too much. Besides, the brightness could attract customers to him.

The chair could incline slightly by design (more like the mesh was flexible, so that it reclined slightly when weight was added), and he relaxed as he sobered up, amidst the relaxing forest lit up by the moon.

He didn't know how much time had passed when he heard some movement, and he knew that the door had been opened by someone. His eyebrows rose, and he looked to the side.

He stood up and saw Micc, using the pole Tumble made for him for balance, as his leg was still recovering at this time.

Finn watched as the earth user headed to the campfire, looking somber, and thinking of various things that were so heavy his shoulders were slumped.

Although he was jolly earlier, this must be how he truly felt.

Finn drank the rest of his tea (and left the guy alone for a bit) before standing up, greeting the man.

There was naturally something he wanted to talk to him about. He just didn't find the chance before. It wasn't in a rush anyway, but now...he was given a chance he'd take it.

"Hey," he said, grinning.

Micc flinched. "Oh, Innkeeper. Hey."

"Wanna talk about it?" he asked, casually sitting next to him. "As someone who's not associated with a team, I think I can be quite unbiased. I've been told I'm a good listener, too."

Micc blinked and stared at him for a while before he wore a weak smile.

"I'm just…worried for the future. I have to support my brother…" he said. "He's so young, and I have to pay for his apprenticeship as well."

"Apprentice? Why would you have to pay for that?"

"Well."

It reminded him of how some internships on earth worked. Obviously, it was the intern working; why did they have to pay the company?

Paying nothing was one thing, and sometimes even understandable, but getting the workers to pay the owner? Wow, damned greedy.

Obviously, the conditions weren't ideal.

At this, Finn smiled, looking at him. "Do you want to be part of my staff, then?"
