He smiled, sitting closely next to her.
"Did you know it was me?" he asked. Well, he did provide a clue. He was thankful she caught on to it, especially since it was so vague like 'met you at the Inn''.
She looked at him. "I knew it was you the moment I saw you," she said. "I will always recognize you."
Finn flinched, his eyes (and face) warming up even more.
"How are you? And what are you doing here? Did those enemies who injure you—"
She nodded. "For now, that problem has been settled," she said. "Thanks to you, I had enough strength to deal with them."
"I'm glad," he said, his head feeling a bit heavy. He leaned down, and his forehead ended up resting on Syl's shoulder. "It is unexpected to see you here, but I am glad. How long will you be staying?"
"I am staying here for the night before heading to Nisgard City."
He blinked. Nisgard City was the Capital City of the Humans.
"Vacationing or for a task?" he asked.
"I'm fetching my nephew from the care of the royal family," she said. "Though they probably sent me because they thought I would get unlucky."
He frowned. "The people with you…"
"Some are safe, some are not."
"You—"
"What has been troubling you?" she asked instead, obviously not wanting to talk about it. "And why are you here pretending to be someone else?"
"It's a long story…" he said, rubbing his head on her shoulder. When she touched his cheek, as if to comfort him, he really did feel re-energized.
He sighed. The whole task had been heavy on him. He was not only tired physically, but also psychologically and emotionally.
"Tell me."
He told an abridged version of the mission and the event that came after.
"You found her?" she asked, and he nodded, heading to the side of the room with the basket. He went back to her, holding a pink ball in his hand.
"..."
"..."
"I'm confused too, okay?" he sighed and sat down on the bed as he felt his tiredness catch up to him. He looked down at the ball. "I'm not even entirely sure what it is…"
"It's an egg."
"Yes, Syl, I can see that," he chuckled, shaking his head. "But what kind?"
"We will find out when it hatches."
"Hatches…"
He paled at a realization. He didn't have to incubate it himself, did he?!
"It's magic…" Sylwen said, touching it gently. "I'd say a beastkin, since they're the only race that can lay eggs… but the aura does not quite match," she mumbled.
"Are we certain?" he asked.
"No, it is unlikely to be a Beastkin," Syl said after studying it for a bit longer. "Beastkin cannot use magic, but this egg was filled with it."
"What?"
"How curious…" Sylwen didn't even realize she sat next to him on the bed, just curiously looking at the egg. Her hand hovered around it and he could feel her feeling it.
"It's very much alive," she told him. "And healthy.
"It just needs time, I feel."
Finn was relieved, but he also voiced out his other worries. "Don't I need to incubate it?"
"I do not know, I have not seen a situation like this before…" she told him, feeling a bit guilty for not having the answer for once.
He smiled. "Well, as long as I know she's healthy. I believe we'll see her soon," he said, gently patting its surface. "...in whatever form she'd take."
In retrospect, he was accepting this much better than he anticipated. After all, he had just been on Earth less than a month ago, and something like this would've been unbelievable.
Perhaps it was because he had seen halfkins, goblins, and magic that his mind had been stretched out so far in the span of a few weeks.
"It would be great if she hatches now, so you can greet her with me."
Syl blinked, looking at him. "Well, when I get my nephew, we will come to visit you."
His eyes brightened as he looked at her. She was wearing that expensive clothing again, and he remembered how otherworldly she was when she entered.
He really did want to see her in his inn again, when it could just be them again.
"I… you saved me—us—again. Thank you," he told her, very sincerely.
"Again?" she asked, a little confused. This made him chuckle.
"That 100 gold really saved me a lot, you know," he said. "When you visit my Inn, you'd be surprised by how much it has changed."
Indeed. By that time, he would give her the best hospitality experience ever.
Sylwen looked at him, remembering how this conversation had happened before. "You saved my life, too."
If he were revealed to be a fake at that moment, what could have happened to him? Worse, what could've happened to his sister?
He had been unlucky for most of his life, but he had been lucky many times since coming to this world.
The Lord and the steward were not stupid at all. If it were normal circumstances, he doubted the same moves would have worked.
Finn once again treated Syl as his lucky charm.
If this was really his sister, then that egg—whatever it was—was the only relative he'd have left.
He stared at the beautiful woman who was looking at him in puzzlement. At the same time, her red eyes were filled with him, and suddenly it felt like a burst of courage was injected to him.
His eyes were warm as he leaned down and his lips touched the side of her face, grazing the side of her lips a bit. His entire body felt warm and pleasant even from just this simple touch.
Syl was very soft.
He wanted to do more, but it wasn't the time.
"I will pay you back someday," he said, looking at her eyes that had widened in shock. However, there was no trace of dislike, which was a relief.
"Can I do it again?"
