When Roland Ox uttered these words, there was a calmness in his voice that Louis found difficult to comprehend.
As if everything was just as it should be.
But Louis found himself momentarily at a loss for words under the weight of that attitude.
Five thousand years?
Even on the Star Continent, where immortals are countless, most nations don't have a history of five thousand years.
Yet Mage Roland said their lineage has guarded here for five thousand years.
Perhaps sensing Louis's astonishment, Roland stood up and patted his shoulder:
"Would you like to come and have a look? The scenery near the entrance of the Turbulent Hollow is quite special."
Louis nodded.
Though surprised by Mage Roland's frankness, he wasn't going to take his words at face value without seeing proof.
Before long, he arrived at an underground grotto.
In the grotto, he saw many traces of human life.
But they were just traces; he didn't see anyone around.
Louis's expression was somewhat strange:
"Didn't you say you've been guarding here for a long time? Why isn't there anyone?"
Mage Roland responded as if it were obvious:
"Because there have always been just three of us in our lineage."
"Three people?"
"My master is in slumber, preparing for the crisis of my sudden death."
"My disciple is still in training and should be attending classes at school."
"So I had to personally bring you here."
"It's normal not to see anyone."
Louis incredulously said:
"How can such a group of only three possibly produce a demigod every generation steadily?"
What kind of concept is this?
According to what Mage Roland said, his teacher can cover his back, meaning that sleeping teacher's level must be at least on par with Roland's.
This idea of each generation having someone to back up the next one...
"It's as if you're saying every inheritor is a demigod."
Roland Ox calmly said:
"You are right, each Guardian in our lineage is a demigod, one generation after another, generation after generation."
A hundred percent success rate?
Louis felt his head buzzing, as if he was being teased.
Just as he was about to ask more questions, he suddenly noticed unusual fluctuations in the nearby space.
In a daze, he seemed to sense a vast world approaching him.
"A half-plane? And the feeling of this half-plane...have you separated the essence of the half-plane from the demigod?"
Roland said:
"Yes, it's similar to the half-plane you have now, but we're more extreme; in our lineage, there's only ever been one half-plane."
"We usually call this half-plane the 'Embers'."
"As long as the Embers don't extinguish, the legacy continues."
Louis looked at Roland and said with a sigh:
"I think I understand what you're doing now."
Mage Roland smiled without saying anything.
Louis murmured:
"A genius idea, the reason you can continuously produce demigods is because you're relying on this five-thousand-year-old half-plane."
Mage Roland did not hide it:
"It seems you have figured it out. Unlike common practitioners, in our lineage, rather than calling us practitioners, it's more accurate to say that this half-plane is the living practitioner."
"Each generation nourishes this half-plane's growth; when one generation dies, the next inherits the power of the half-plane."
"Because of the unique nature of the Ember half-plane, the inherited power constantly nurtures the new inheritor, allowing them to quickly ascend to demigod status."
"How about that, isn't it a simple idea?"
Louis couldn't help but ask:
"What if the person who inherits the half-plane runs away?"
Roland shook his head and said:
"It's not because you inherited the half-plane that you choose to guard the entrance."
"It's because you want to guard the entrance that you inherit the half-plane."
Louis clicked his tongue and further inquired:
"After the Ember half-plane transfers to the next inheritor, what happens to the original person?"
Roland replied:
"They will quickly weaken and die."
"So to ensure a backup, after we pass the legacy to the next generation, we use special means to feign death."
"This way, at least there's a trump card left for later."
Louis asked, "Is it worth it? If I'm not mistaken, your whole life is confined to these mountains."
Sitting by the twisted spatial fissures, Roland smiled brightly and said:
"I think it's alright; even though the restrictions are severe, there's plenty for me to do in these mountains."
Louis said, "Like cultivating talents and letting them venture beyond the mountains?"
Roland nodded and said, "If I can help improve my hometown's living conditions, that would be even better."
"Because the half-plane is restricted, I can't venture far, but among the kids who have left the mountain, some have returned to persuade me, hoping I would go to a big city and utilize my talents."
"They think it's such a waste for me to stay here."
Standing in front of the Turbulent Hollow, he seemed particularly talkative.
But when speaking of his students, he became somewhat shy:
"I quite enjoy cultivating on this land, so there's truly little resentment."
"My teacher provided me with an excellent education, yet I remain content here. Does that seem peculiar?"
Seeing his somewhat bashful expression, Louis shook his head and said:
"Why would it be strange? I've always believed that the purpose of our education is to help our hometown out of poverty, not to abandon a hometown that's no longer poor."
Roland Ox glanced back at Louis and earnestly nodded:
"If you can understand that, then that's wonderful."
Louis stood up, dusted off his pants, and said:
"Today's conversation was enjoyable and has brought me quite a bit of peace."
Roland extended his hand and said:
"Thank you for your understanding, Your Highness Louis."
Louis smiled:
"Have you visited the royal capital and seen me before?"
Roland said:
"I once took the next generation inheritor to the Imperial Capital to procure some necessities for the children."
Louis realized:
"Let me guess, is his name Michelle Caroline?"
Mage Roland was somewhat surprised and said:
"I didn't expect your investigation to be so thorough."
Louis said, "A good teacher can guide a student towards a rightful future, and I'm quite sure you have that ability."
Roland chuckled lowly, "Why are you so certain?"
Louis pointed to his eyes and said:
"Because I've seen it with my own eyes."
Michelle Caroline, the most brilliant genius to emerge in the early stages of the Great River project.
He didn't leave the poor town that raised him, instead continuing Roland Ox's legacy to become the next headmaster of the school.
One generation after another.
Louis extended his hand and said:
"Mr. Roland, if you encounter any difficulties, please come and let me know."
"Don't force yourself, and don't bear it alone."
"The land of Ense is vast, and talents abound; there will always be someone who can help you."
Mage Roland said, "Wouldn't that be too troublesome?"
Louis said, "No, why would it be troublesome? People often say that no matter where they are, true heroes never let their brilliance fade."
He paused and then, with a gentle tone, said:
"Now I see it's true."
"You can hope that perhaps others will help you."
Curious, Mage Roland asked:
"Help me with what?"
"Help you achieve your wish, to teach a man to fish."
Louis left behind a communication crystal and turned to leave the grotto.
Mage Roland watched the back of Louis as he left, for a long, long time, and suddenly broke into a relieved smile.
"Actually, at the beginning, being trapped here did make me feel somewhat resentful."
He touched his chest and suddenly smiled, saying:
"Master, but now I feel that this isn't so bad after all."
Meanwhile, on the other side, in the Arts City branch of the God of Love Church.
A mage in a high-top hat looked at the priest standing there and took off his hat, saying:
"I heard Your Eminence has been waiting for me for a long time?"
The priest looked up and nodded.
If there were believers present, they would certainly recognize this priest as the cardinal responsible for regional management.
A new undercurrent was surging in the City of Art.
