Chapter 236: The Ones Who Got Away

"This is the youth who the Pioneer said we could jointly besiege? What a joke!"

"Damn it! We were deceived!"

"..."

Inside a secret room in Utopia No. 2 Village.

Three people dressed like ordinary Utopian villagers were observing everything outside through the monitoring display in front of them.

When they saw the change Hazati underwent after stabbing himself with the [Hate Fuel], they were initially invigorated, but in just a few short minutes, they realized something was wrong.

After Hazati transformed into a blue flame monster, companions from the [Promised Land] in the village began to mutate one by one, and it seemed impossible for them to revert back to human form.

At this moment, the three of them turned their gaze to a certain dusty-looking ceramic jar in the corner of the secret room.

Inside was the [Hate Fuel] given to them by the [Pioneer].

That's right! The three were naturally also members of the [Promised Land] organization.

But unlike Hazati, they did not trust the [Pioneer] blindly.

The reason was simple—they didn't join the [Promised Land] to follow the [Pioneer], but to follow [Ghost Valley]!

"Damn it! I knew that bastard wouldn't mean well after Mr. Ghost Valley passed. He's arranged all of us as sacrificial pawns!"

"Let's settle the score with him later, for now, we need to figure out how to escape this village!"

"Speaking of which… don't you think the methods of that young man are somewhat similar to Mr. Ghost Valley's?"

Their words and actions revealed their respect for [Ghost Valley] and disdain for the [Pioneer].

Unfortunately, ever since [Ghost Valley] was killed in Chengyang City, his dispatched members scattered nationwide became leaderless.

In this situation, since the [Pioneer] was the only founder of the [Promised Land] aside from [Ghost Valley], they followed his command and arrangement in the short term.

More than three months ago, the city destruction event in Chengyang had just ended.

The [Pioneer] sent most of [Ghost Valley]'s subordinates to various villages outside the Celestial Pool of Tianshan.

At that time, the three of them sensed something was off.

The whole operation felt eerie—there were no clear mission instructions, nor were there any supernatural objects provided.

The [Pioneer] only gave each of them a steel needle coated with [Hate Fuel], telling them that inserting it into their body when severely wounded or in desperate need of power would make them strong for a short time.

They were then told to hide in the Utopian Village and live as regular villagers.

This dull task lasted a whole three months before they received one new directive—to kill the young man traveling with Saintess Ayimu if possible.

But just now, upon seeing the young man's appearance through their hidden surveillance after he alighted from a vehicle, they immediately realized the gravity of the situation.

Wasn't this young man the very one who killed Mr. Ghost Valley in Chengyang City!

Even now, searching any video platform for news replays of the Chengyang battle would reveal how formidable his fighting strength was.

The [Pioneer] expected them to take care of him?!

Wasn't this akin to the Nine-Headed Insect in Journey to the West telling Benbo Erba to deal with Tang Monk and his disciples?

They just about wanted to send a video to the [Pioneer], pointing at their own faces in confusion, saying: "Huh? Me?"

This instantly made them realize they were being used as sacrificial pawns to perish alongside the youth!

That bastard [Pioneer] didn't trust them either; he intended to use the young man to wipe out [Ghost Valley]'s remnants while achieving some kind of goal!

Using others to achieve his ends! Killing two birds with one stone!

But how could they perish together?

Without a doubt, the most likely source of trouble was the supernatural objects the [Pioneer] gave them.

So even before Wu Liang got off the vehicle, the three of them had already stored their steel needles in the [Ghost-Sealing Jar] for safekeeping.

This jar was a special supernatural object developed by [Ghost Valley] during his lifetime.

Any supernatural object placed in this jar would become extremely inert, unable to exert its supernatural effect normally inside.

So, it was often used to store unstable and dangerous supernatural objects.

Just now, with the comprehensive combustion of [Hate Fuel] induced by Hazati, the three steel needles inside the jar naturally couldn't activate.

"Exactly, I've watched the news videos of Mr. Ghost Valley's crusade in Chengyang City several times. The young man seemed to deploy many fierce ghosts to counter Mr. Ghost Valley's numerous artificial ghosts."

"It's strange, could he also create fierce ghosts and supernatural objects?"

The three wondered as they moved toward the exit on the other end of the secret room.

This secret passage led directly to the back of the mountain outside Utopia No. 2 Village; villagers said these roads were originally meant for hiding and escaping in case of supernatural incidents.

However, with no supernatural objects affecting Utopian villagers over the years, these roads had long been neglected.

Taking advantage of these three months, all while distrusting the [Pioneer], the three silently installed hidden monitoring at each exit and main road in the village.

They often hid here, observing village situations, and were the first to notice Saintess Ayimu's disappearance on the Sacred Mountain.

One had to admire the notion that there's always a way out.

Their previous caution left them a path to survival now!

Cre-eak—

The secret passage door slowly opened.

The upraised dust from long dormancy revealed a familiar and despairing face in front of them.

"Well, well, the underground rats are finally coming out? How does it feel? Is the sunlight outside dazzling?" Wu Liang said with a cheeky grin.

Behind him were dozens of blue flame monsters in the entire Utopia No. 2 Village, but now they were all tightly bound by grayish-white mist chains, detained like prisoners in the shadows.

The densely packed Utopian villagers around them stood mindlessly like zombies, and the few villagers who remained awake after not being put to sleep by the Nightmare looked at Wu Liang and the backs of the fierce ghost minions with sheer terror.

At first glance, Wu Liang now looked like a king commanding a large host of supernatural monsters, with the fierce ghost minions by his side as his most loyal soldiers.

Emerging from the pitch-dark secret passage, the three faced this scene with mixed emotions.

One of them suddenly recalled their earlier discussions about the similar methods between the young man and Mr. Ghost Valley, carefully scrutinizing the mischievous smirk on the face before them.

He instinctively knelt and said: "Supernatural Calamity… you're the disaster Mr. Ghost Valley said would lead all humankind into the supernatural era?"

Wu Liang: "?"

He had just finished explaining to Ayimu and the villagers that he was not some disaster bringing numerous fierce ghosts.

How come these remaining [Promised Land] stragglers immediately knelt before him?

Speaking words leading to misunderstanding.

Wu Liang turned his head to see the more terrified looks and "as expected" expressions from villagers whom Ayimu had just persuaded.

Alright, did I just become a calamity?
