Ghost Compendium

Chapter 341: A Desperate Disparity

Zeng Hu never thought of using "endless" to describe the place he had lived for decades.

But what should have been winding mountain paths and undulating peaks and valleys now appeared flat as if carefully polished with a sharp blade. All the geographical markers from memory had vanished, leaving only what seemed like a black dot not far away, the nature of which was unknown.

But appearing on an otherwise empty plain, this little black dot must be something special, right?

"Could I have stumbled into a Ghost Wall?" Zeng Hu worriedly thought.

During the few days in the training camp, aside from getting himself to more swiftly adapt to using his Awakened Ability, the instructor primarily focused on ensuring that he and the other recruits memorized the various characteristics and classifications of Fierce Ghosts.

The most critical point was that the Red-clothed Fierce Ghosts, appearing after the Supernatural Calamity, are entirely different from previous supernatural incidents.

They do not deliberately create supernatural barriers!

Perhaps it relates to the repulsion between Fierce Ghosts. After all, during the Supernatural Calamity, Fierce Ghosts emerged endlessly, often causing multiple Fierce Ghosts to surface within a small area.

If they all created supernatural barriers, it would easily envelop other Fierce Ghosts, tantamount to declaring war on their own kind.

So, in situations where supernatural barriers seldom occur, the appearance of a Ghost Wall becomes quite unlikely.

Unless certain special Fierce Ghosts inherently possess barrier characteristics in their abilities.

This was why Zeng Hu felt a bit tense now.

Perhaps he was already being targeted by a special Fierce Ghost!

If the opponent could kill without causing any contact damage, his own [Material Penetration] would be entirely useless, wouldn't it?

Whoosh—

Just as Zeng Hu was on alert, a black shadow suddenly darted from the side at an incredibly terrifying speed!

"Damn it! What's that!"

The speed was so fast that he couldn't tell what it was. As he noticed the shadow, the claws it extended were already mere inches from grazing his eyelashes, almost about to gouge out Zeng Hu's eyeballs in the next second.

In this critical moment, he instinctively used his Awakened Ability to perform Material Penetration and evade the attack.

If he hadn't gotten used to activating his Awakened Ability under the instructor's guidance over the past few days to protect himself at all times, Zeng Hu might not have reacted fast enough to penetrate this attack.

Boom—

The glistening claws passed through Zeng Hu's eyes, along with the not particularly large body of the black shadow, penetrating through him and slamming into the ground heavily.

The explosion-like sound caused Zeng Hu to tremble all over, and when he turned to look, he found a crater about two meters in diameter right behind him!

The appearance of the black shadow finally became clear—it was a cat.

A cat with a fur as black as ink, with only its eyes showing an eerie ghostly green, as if ghostly flames danced within them.

Upon realizing that one claw had struck the ground, it seemed surprised as well that it had passed through Zeng Hu without any sensation of physical contact.

"This thing... should count as a ghost, right?" Zeng Hu was a bit stupefied now.

Logically, a normal cat wouldn't have such destructive power. But to call it a ghost, he didn't see anything particularly eerie or terrifying about it either.

"Meeooow!"

At this moment, the black cat at the bottom of the crater opened its mouth and roared at Zeng Hu, revealing a small cat's mouth filled with rows of teeth resembling gear whorls, seemingly numbering nearly a hundred.

The dense, sharp teeth made Zeng Hu's scalp tingle. There was no longer any doubt about it now.

Whoosh—

After roaring, the black cat rushed again with an extremely terrifying speed, opening its mouth to bite towards Zeng Hu's chest.

Still in the process of [Material Penetration], Zeng Hu naturally wasn't afraid. With a flash of vicious light in his eyes, he pulled out a blood-red dagger from his sleeve.

He had stealthily acquired this while sneaking out of the official Chang'an division, penetrating walls and defensive measures to retrieve it from the warehouse storing Supernatural Objects.

This blood-red dagger could effectively harm Fierce Ghosts. If used to completely chop up the main body of a Fierce Ghost, it could even achieve the effect of exorcising the Fierce Ghost.

However, this dagger also had its side effects.

Some who have used it experienced unstoppable bleeding for half an hour; others experienced nothing until the next day when they were found dead from asphyxia at home; there were also Awakened who, after exorcising a Fierce Ghost with it, completely lost their sanity, attempting to kill every living thing they saw. The Chang'an division paid a significant price to subdue them.

Due to its strange side effects and the uncertainty of their specifics, to prevent situations where the user loses sanity and harms teammates, the division had no choice but to store and control it, refraining from further use.

But Zeng Hu knew none of this; he only knew this thing could harm Fierce Ghosts.

Being just a young man who had only recently started official training, his daily sessions were already fully scheduled. The instructor had no time to explain the effects of each Supernatural Object clearly.

They could only warn recruits that the warehouse storing Supernatural Objects was full of dangerous items, and without approval and the relevant paperwork, they must not approach it.

The word "dangerous" in the eyes of a hot-blooded young man basically translated to "powerful," and especially since there had never been an Awakened like Zeng Hu before, who could completely ignore building defenses. No one foresaw that this kid would stealthily sneak in, steal a dagger, and leave.
