A Core Ship From The Start

Chapter 1479: Lost and Found (Ben Meow Is So Tired I Don't Want to Move at All)

Duanmu Huai felt like he was cursed on this mission.

Just a moment ago, he had contacted the others, and both Ann, Mary, and Nemume Satori had successfully reached the research institute, beginning the retrieval of God's Key and the Lawyer Core.

Though it can't be said to be completely successful yet, as the saying goes, a good start is half the battle.

And himself?

He ran here eagerly, only to find a half-blown research institute with Dead Soldiers wandering everywhere, and it was hard to find the place where the Wind Law Core was stored. But unsurprisingly, he discovered the core was missing, and through Retrospection of the wreckage, Duanmu Huai learned about what happened here—one member of the institute was the Thousand People Lawmaker, who conspired with several Lawyer Avatars attacking the institute, explosively broke through the institute's defense.

Luckily, the institute's personnel also noticed something wrong, plus the Lawyer Avatars weren't very strong, so they had time to move the Wind Law Core before the breakthrough.

The person carrying the Wind Law Core wasn't the traitor, but his deputy was. After the carrier drove away with the Wind Law Core, the traitor's true colors were revealed. However, the researcher didn't give up; instead, he summoned courage and accelerated, crashing into a nearby district.

The Lawyer Avatar was thrown off the vehicle, while he escaped with the box containing the sealed Wind Law Core.

When Duanmu Huai tracked the bloodstains to the end of the alley, he found the corpse of the researcher, who had died from excessive blood loss, but the box he held was nowhere to be found!

At this moment, Duanmu Huai felt a murderous rage!

He absolutely loathed game scenarios where the protagonist searches for something but can't find it—either it's gone by the time they arrive, or it's taken, leading to a chase. After exhausting all efforts to retrieve it, suddenly it's gone again! And then it's a game of catch, only to discover upon catching and opening it—damn, gone again! Cue the endless search!

To be honest, this idiotic game design is what Duanmu Huai hates the most!

Just like now, he could only rely on Retrospection to detect someone taking the box, but had no clue who did it!

Might as well completely destroy everything.

Duanmu Huai's expression wavered as he looked at the street ahead, clenching his fist. He had the urge to punch and obliterate the entire district.

Tired, I don't want to search anymore, let it all be destroyed.

"Um, Judge...?"

Noticing the chilling murderous intent emanating from Duanmu Huai, the girl beside him timidly looked at him.

"What should we do next...?"

The girl appeared to be only fourteen or fifteen years old, with short black hair reaching her shoulders and deep blue eyes. Her body was slender and weak, dressed in a white dress. Her small, delicate mouth was tightly shut without daring to speak much, resembling a timid little white rabbit.

She embodied the perfect image of someone soft and easy to push down.

However, contrary to her fragile exterior seemingly vulnerable enough to cry after a punch, the girl held a massive scythe—larger than herself.

She was the sixth Fusion Warrior—Xixi.

As for why she was brought along?

Duanmu Huai shrugged, claiming ignorance. When he was at the airport, the girl stood there helplessly like an abandoned puppy watching him—what could he do?

What to do?

I also want to know what to do now!

Duanmu Huai glanced at Ogis perched on his shoulder, who remained silent as always.

Okay, taking that into account you're useless.

Fortunately, Heaven never seals off all paths.

Or rather, some folks have a death wish.

As Duanmu Huai tilted his head upwards, feeling dreadful, a voice came from behind.

"What's this? An uncle with a kid? This isn't the place for you to be."

Duanmu Huai turned his head to see several armed men aiming their guns at him and the others.

As Duanmu Huai turned around, their solemn expressions instantly changed, backing away instinctively while raising their guns—too late for them, unfortunately.

Ogis on Duanmu Huai's shoulder slightly moved her fingers, and the men's guns instantly shattered into pieces. Simultaneously, Duanmu Huai let out an angry roar and charged!

If you're bringing trouble to me, I'll unleash my wrath with pleasure!

Heaven has a path, yet you chose Hell; Destruction you've sought of your own accord!

I see you're tired of living!

In the blink of an eye, Duanmu Huai, towering like a bear, dashed into the crowd, fists clenched tightly. He swung forcefully, sending the men flying. Judging by their mangled bodies mid-air, surviving after hitting the ground wasn't a concern anymore.

The remaining men hastily fumbled for a handgun, aimed at Duanmu Huai, and pulled the trigger.

"Bang!"

The bullet shot out, hitting Duanmu Huai's shoulder but bounced off as if striking a tire. Duanmu Huai didn't even glance at him, casually stomping, turning him into pulp. He then reached out, grabbed two more men beside him, and roared while clenching his fists.

"Crack!"

Blood spattered as the heads of two men were crushed like watermelons by Duanmu Huai's massive hands. Witnessing this scene, the remaining man was so terrified that he practically flew up, throwing down his weapon and scrambling to escape. Yet, Duanmu Huai's blood-stained hand reached out to grab him, forcibly turning his head to face him.

"Listen, kid, tell me, who took that guy's stuff?"

Duanmu Huai shook the researcher's corpse at the man, whose face turned deathly pale and who was so terrified he was about to cry.

"I don't know, I don't know what you're talking about! We just arrived here; we have no idea what's happening here! I don't even know who he is!"

"Then, who took it!?"

Duanmu Huai had no patience left for slow interrogation or using the Shadow to print information. Chasing this lead from the ruins of the lab to here had exhausted what little patience he had left.

So, faced with an NPC that could provide information, Duanmu Huai chose intimidation between threats and temptation.

"Speak, or I'll twist off your head!"

"I really don't know..."

The man was on the verge of tears, just a small gang member from Dusk Street, never having seen such a terrifying scene.

"Yes, yes, it's that person! It must be her! She's the best at this kind of sneaky stuff! I assure you, if you're looking for something lost, she's the one to find!"

"Who? Take me to her!!"

As Duanmu Huai wreaked havoc on Dusk Street, creating chaos, deep within an inconspicuous warehouse, a petite figure was curled up, excitedly examining her loot by the dim light streaming through the window.

"Who would've thought there'd be so much to gain."

The petite figure sat on the floor, reaching out both hands and lifting them high. In front of her stood a large aluminum briefcase and various small items, including wallets, pins, rings, pens, and even a notebook...

"Hmm, first is this box."

She lifted the box, gazing at the emblem on it.

"This is the mark of the Fire Moth, there must be something incredible inside. That person seemed to be with the Fire Moth too, should I sell this to them? Since they risked their lives to bring it here, it must be important to them, and it should fetch a good price."

With this thought, she smiled with excitement, rubbing her hands together.

"Don't rush, don't rush; a suitable price is a must. Hmm, what's a box worth that the Fire Moth people would carry around risking their lives? This much? Or this much? Or maybe this much? Ah, so hard to decide... Hmm?"

As she counted on her fingers, suddenly her previously crouched body straightened sharply.

"What sound is that?"

Outside the warehouse door, a low footstep echoed.

"Thump... thump... thump... thump..."

Without any reason, she felt it wasn't a human footstep, but more like some indescribable monster, as if this monster was wandering the midnight streets... If it found her, it would catch and devour her...

The footsteps grew closer, and she hurriedly began to pack her things. But before she could finish packing, the footsteps suddenly ceased, followed by the next moment...

"Boom!"

The tightly closed warehouse door was smashed open, and Duanmu Huai threw away the corpse of a gang member used to break the door, stepping inside in large strides. The dark figure had already hidden in a corner crevice, not daring to move. She hardly dared to breathe, cautiously peeking through the box's gap outside.

The dilapidated warehouse was filled with containers, but Duanmu Huai couldn't care less. He waved his arm, shoving aside the massive containers. The sounds of clangs echoed all around, and the shadow cowered, dodging the falling giant boxes that raised clouds of dust. In an instant, she was completely engulfed by the debris.

Meanwhile, Duanmu Huai noticed the box placed aside, too late to tidy up.

"Alright, found it."

Seeing the box, Duanmu Huai's previously annoyed mood lightened. He reached out, picked up the box, and opened it—emerald light emerged, transforming into a howling whirlwind...

"Click."

Duanmu Huai closed the box again with a flick of his wrist.

Hmm, no problem, the core is still there.

"Let's go."

So, Duanmu Huai no longer cared about this shabby warehouse. He swept his gaze around and then walked straight out.

"Thump... thump... thump..."

Not until the heavy footsteps disappeared did the shadow stealthily crawl out from beneath the collapsed box, staring at the smashed open door.

"How could he do that! Those were treasures I painstakingly collected... But, oh well!"

Saying this, the dark figure proudly pulled a document from her bosom.

"Good thing I came prepared, hehe, don't think this is over!"
