Lin Jiajun's two sons were both robust and very adorable. The younger one, especially, was fair and chubby—endearing at first sight.
Zhang Yuxi held him, reluctant to let him go. Her mind couldn't help but drift back to what her own babies looked like at half a month old.
He's just as cute! No, they were even cuter!
Wang Lu had also stopped working and was now a full-time housewife, devoting herself wholeheartedly to the daily care of her two babies. Although their mischief sometimes drove her so crazy she regretted having the two rascals, she would always remember they were her own flesh and blood. Besides, Lin Feng took care of four children all by himself. With both her mother-in-law and her own mother to help, it would be inexcusable if she couldn't manage.
Seeing how much Zhang Yuxi adored the baby, Wang Lu teased her, "Your financial situation allows it now, and the children have grown a bit. Have you considered having another?"
Zhang Yuxi shook her head. "Nope. What if we end up with quadruplets again? How would we handle that?"
Wang Lu snorted with laughter. "You're so wealthy now, how could you not afford a few more kids? Besides, having a second child is encouraged, and there are no fines. What's there to fear?"
Zhang Yuxi remained calm. "No, no. Four babies are already a handful!"
Zhang Yuxi held the child out for Lin Feng to see. "Honey, look, isn't he adorable? So robust! He's bound to be successful when he grows up!"
Lin Feng took the child and examined him closely. "He certainly is a handsome boy!"
This child wasn't shy with strangers and was comfortable in anyone's arms. As Lin Feng looked at him, his mind inadvertently wandered back to what his own babies looked like at six months old.
After handing the child back to Wang Lu, Lin Jiajun asked the hotel to bring out their finest liquor. "Come on, the best stuff! Let's see which of us brothers goes down first!"
Lin Feng tried to dissuade him. "I've told you before, you couldn't outdrink me then, and you can't outdrink me now."
Lin Jiajun sighed. "Brother, it's been so many years since we've had a drink together. Can't we just have a proper one this time?"
Lin Feng was adamant. "No."
Left with no choice, Lin Jiajun had to compromise.
Lin Feng said, "Let's just have a beer. A token drink is enough. We're all fathers now; we have to think about our health."
Lin Jiajun smiled. "Alright!"
Lin Rui sat down with them. "Count me in!" Now that Lin Rui had opened a driving school, he hadn't touched a drop of alcohol, though he still smoked.
Lin Jiajun looked around. "Come on, Lin Jie, you're in too!"
Lin Jie sat down. He was an adult now, so having a beer was no issue.
Lin Feng said, "You're still young. Just a token drink will do."
"Right, just a token drink!" Lin Jiajun echoed.
Lin Jie stood up. "Since I'm the youngest one here, let me pour for everyone!"
Lin Rui was very pleased. "Spoken like a true Peking University student. You've only been there a short while and you already understand the ways of the world."
Lin Jiajun smiled and said, "Lin Jie, study hard and become a successful person."
Lin Jie nodded.
Lin Rui raised his glass. "Brother Yu isn't here this year, so it's just the four of us. Come on, drink up. Here's to a prosperous new year for all of us!"
The four men downed their drinks in one go.
Lin Jie poured more wine.
While the men drank, the women chatted on the other side. The babies played together with Xiao Wen and Lin Rui's son, watched over by a couple and Zhou Cuilan.
Even though Zhang Yuxi wasn't fond of Lin Xiaolan, she still felt a pang of sympathy for her.
Wang Lu, while breastfeeding her son, commented, "We were originally going to invite Feng Yong today, too, but given the situation, it wouldn't be right. Especially with Xiaolan here, it would've been awkward."
Du Yan said with regret, "I really thought highly of Feng Yong. Now that Xiaolan is pregnant with Song Yi's child, there's no chance for him anymore."
Wang Lu whispered, "I heard Feng Yong has a new girlfriend now. She's a Chinese teacher at one of the city's key high schools. They were classmates, and she's never been married."
Du Yan thought for a moment. "I saw Feng Yong with a woman the other day. She was taller and thinner than Xiaolan, with long hair, and was dressed very nicely."
In short, she was much better than Lin Xiaolan.
Zhang Yuxi usually didn't express her opinion on such gossip. For her, it was simple. If Lin Xiaolan isn't happy, she's not an innocent victim. Everyone has to pay the price for the path they choose and bear the consequences.
From an experienced point of view, Feng Yong was a good man. He didn't smoke, drink, or gamble, always came home on time, treated his wife well, and was a filial son. A salary of five to six thousand a month was considered quite good in Meicheng; after all, some store managers only earned around six or seven thousand. Besides, Feng Yong had saved enough to buy a new house, and he already had his old one, giving him two properties in total. He was already doing much better than the many people who were still struggling to afford a single home. A couple living that way might not become fabulously wealthy, but their life would certainly be comfortable.
It was just that Lin Xiaolan wanted a much better life, something Feng Yong probably couldn't provide at the time.
Because of this, Lin Jiajun and Jiang Anmin had discussed making him an assistant manager at their shop in Yuhuali, where the salary would have been generous. But Feng Yong refused. He changed jobs to become a sales supervisor at a company where he earned over seven thousand a month, plus social security and a housing fund—the benefits were great. It seemed that after leaving Lin Xiaolan, his life was going quite well.
Lin Rui had always been good to Feng Yong, and Lin Jiajun enjoyed hanging out with him, so they all kept in touch.
Just as Wang Lu was speaking, Du Yan tugged her sleeve and shot her a look.
Sure enough, Lin Xiaolan had come over. She sat down and smiled. "What are you all talking about?"
From that single question, Zhang Yuxi could tell that Lin Xiaolan had changed.
Du Yan smiled. "We were just asking Yu Xi if she wants to have another baby!"
Wang Lu quickly added, "Exactly! She adores my youngest but doesn't want to have one of her own."
Zhang Yuxi laughed. "I really don't. If I get the urge, I'll just come over and cuddle your kid."
Wang Lu laughed. "Oh, get out of here! Who said you could hold our baby? Go have your own! It's not like you don't have a husband!" Then, she called out to Lin Feng. "Director Lin, look at your wife! She loves my little one so much, why don't you two have another?"
Lin Feng smiled. "We'll have to consider it. If she gets pregnant, of course we'll have the baby."
Lin Xiaolan turned to Zhang Yuxi. "Are you going to have one?"
Zhang Yuxi directed her next question to Lin Xiaolan. "Is pregnancy difficult?"
Lin Xiaolan's eyes dimmed. "It's difficult."
Zhang Yuxi laughed. "You find it difficult with just one, but I was carrying four. You have no idea how terrified I was, constantly on edge. You talk about a second child, but what if I have quadruplets again? What then?"
Wang Lu chuckled. "What's there to be afraid of? You're not alone now; you have Lin Feng and the kids with you. Besides, it's not like winning the lottery. You're not going to hit a quadruplet jackpot again!"
As she spoke, she held her son, who had finished his milk, up to Zhang Yuxi. "See? Isn't he sweet? Don't you want another one?"
Zhang Yuxi looked on with envy. "Take him away!"
Wang Lu laughed. "I won't! I'm going to let you look your fill and enjoy the view!"
Zhang Yuxi was amused. "Wang Lu, why are you acting like such a child now?" She used to be such a reserved person.
Wang Lu laughed. "Spending all day with kids has made me childish."
