When the quadruplets woke up, they immediately started clamoring about their hungry tummies and how they wanted to eat.
Lin Feng fed them some of the food from the hotel. The babies clearly didn't like it, taking only a few bites before refusing to eat anymore.
Fortunately, Lin Feng had a backup plan. "We're going to Eldest Aunt's house. She's made porridge there."
He had been worried the little ones wouldn't eat well while they were out, so he had specifically called Sun Rou and asked her to cook some.
They took a taxi to his aunt's home. Being in the south, the house had no central heating. But with the elderly and children living there, the air conditioner was kept on all day. As they entered, the sounds of someone busying about came from the living room, followed by a voice, "You're back? I'll get the food on the table right away."
Sun Rou's home was a split-level house. The first floor contained the living room, kitchen, dining room, and a small bedroom. A short flight of stairs led to the second floor, which had the master and secondary bedrooms. The master bedroom didn't have its own en-suite bathroom.
The house was a pre-owned property that Yu Zheng had bought, and it had cost over 10,000 yuan per square meter. Property prices in the Suzhou-Hangzhou region had always been high, and since this house wasn't too far from the city center, it was even more expensive.
As soon as Lin Feng and Zhang Yuxi arrived, they helped the quadruplets out of their coats. The whole family was there; Chuan Chuan had also just started his school holidays.
Yu Zheng smiled and said, "Alright, Chuan Chuan, take your younger siblings to wash their hands. We're about to eat."
Chuan Chuan led the four little ones to the washroom.
Lin Feng took off his jacket and asked, "Brother, where's Eldest Aunt?"
"She's resting in her room. Her health hasn't been great lately."
"I'll go check on her."
Zhang Yuxi went with him. When they entered the room, the Eldest Aunt was getting dressed, and Lin Feng went over to help. She had lost a lot of weight, but she broke into a smile the moment she saw Lin Feng and Zhang Yuxi.
"You're here! Have you eaten yet?"
"We had a little," Lin Feng replied. "The food outside isn't as good as home-cooked meals. It smells like Sister Sun Rou is almost done."
His aunt chuckled. "Food from outside is never as good as what you make yourself." She pushed herself up slightly. "I want to see the children. They must have grown so tall!"
The children were already sitting at the dining table. When their great-aunt saw them, her face lit up with a beaming smile. "Look how well each of you has grown!"
Lin Feng told his children, "This is your great-aunt. Go on, say hello."
The quadruplets vaguely remembered their great-aunt and obediently greeted her. She answered them joyfully.
Sun Rou served each of the children a bowl of light and flavorful porridge. Her family wasn't large, so their dining table only seated six people. They had the children eat in the living room instead.
At the dining table, Yu Zheng said with a smile, "If I remember correctly, it's been many years since you last came."
Lin Feng nodded. "I came the day Chuan Chuan was born." He looked around. "Walking over here just now, I noticed how much this place has changed!"
Yu Zheng laughed. "It's been over ten years, and your kids are already three. Of course things have changed!"
Sun Rou asked, "What brings you to Suzhou all of a sudden?"
"Yuxi is on vacation, and we wanted to take the kids out for a trip. I was thinking we could visit Disneyland," Lin Feng explained. "Since we were passing through Suzhou, we decided to stop by and see you all."
"That's wonderful. If you came during the Chinese New Year, the crowds there would be terrifying!"
"Exactly. I wanted to avoid the crowds."
"Then we'll go early tomorrow morning, have fun until the evening, and then head back."
"Sounds like a plan."
After the meal, Chuan Chuan took the four little ones up to his room. There was a small loft on the second floor that was filled with all his toys.
"Let me show you guys this," Chuan Chuan said. "It's really cool."
Chuan Chuan loved LEGO bricks and had built a Transformer. The eldest of the quadruplets, a huge Transformer fan, stared with wide-eyed wonder. He went clattering down the stairs and tugged on Lin Feng's sleeve to get him to come and see.
"Dad, look! A Transformer!"
Lin Feng praised Chuan Chuan for his excellent building skills, then told his own kids, "When we get back home, Dad will buy some for you, too!"
While the children were busy playing, the adults sat in the living room and chatted. After eating, the Eldest Aunt sat with them for a short while before going back to her room to lie down.
Lin Feng poured her a glass of water, secretly dissolving one of the pills from his system into it.
"Eldest Aunt?"
She was already dozing off. "Lin Feng? What is it, child?"
Lin Feng helped her sit up. "Eldest Aunt, here. Drink some water before you go back to sleep."
She shook her head. "I don't feel like drinking water right now, child."
Lin Feng coaxed her gently. "It's not much, Eldest Aunt. It'll be gone in a few sips."
The Eldest Aunt was very fond of Lin Feng, just as she was of his brother. She opened her eyes, gulped the water down, and asked, "What was that?"
"Did it taste good?" Lin Feng asked.
"The flavor was quite nice."
"You get some sleep now. When you wake up, I'll cook something delicious for you."
Having tasted Lin Feng's cooking before, his aunt nodded. "Alright. Make some braised fish for your Eldest Aunt. Just don't make the flavor too rich; it gives me heartburn."
"Got it. You get some rest, Eldest Aunt."
She soon drifted off to sleep. Lin Feng came out, washed the cup in the kitchen and put it away, then rejoined the others in the living room.
They were in the middle of a conversation about the upcoming New Year.
Yu Zheng was saying, "We can't go back this year. With Mom being sick, we can't leave her alone." He turned to Lin Feng. "What about you guys? Are you traveling for the New Year, or will you go back to Meicheng?"
Zhang Yuxi shook her head. "I'm not sure yet. We'll follow Lin Feng's plan."
Sun Rou smiled. "You say you'll follow his plan, but wherever you want to go, he'll surely take you."
Just then, Lin Feng sat down. "We're planning to spend a few days in Sanya."
Sun Rou felt a pang of envy; Lin Feng had bought a beach villa there. She thought for a moment. "I don't think we've ever been to Sanya. How about we go too, once Mom's feeling a bit better?"
Lin Feng had no objection. "Of course. You can just stay at my place."
"That's settled then!" Sun Rou declared immediately. "We can let Mom see the ocean, too. She's been in Suzhou all year and hasn't gone anywhere."
"We'll see when the time comes," Yu Zheng said.
Sun Rou then brought up another topic. "Lin Xiaolan had a daughter... How did things work out with that Song Yi?"
After the incident with Lin Xiaolan, Lin Dahu and Lin Rui had completely cut off contact with her. The Lin Daan family didn't want to get involved either; if her own parents and older brother weren't managing her affairs, why should they? As for Lin Dashan, he felt a degree of pity for Lin Xiaolan. But in response, Lin Xiaolan had acted as if she'd lost her mind, claiming no one in the Lin family was a good person. After that, Lin Dashan stopped considering her his niece.
Lin Feng was even more out of the loop than the others. "I'm not sure," he said flatly. "Lin Xiaolan left the family group chat. No one has mentioned her, and I haven't asked."
As a woman herself, Sun Rou couldn't help but sigh with emotion, especially when she thought of Feng Yong. After leaving Lin Xiaolan, his career and love life had both flourished. She heard his wife was pregnant with a son, and Feng Yong's family treated her exceptionally well.
Lin Xiaolan and Feng Yong were now living completely different lives.
The conversation continued into the afternoon, and Lin Feng remembered his promise to cook braised fish for his aunt.
"Brother, is the vegetable market behind here still around, or was it torn down?"
"That was demolished a long time ago. There's a foot massage parlor there now. Why? Need to buy groceries? The fridge is full of them!"
"Eldest Aunt wants to eat my braised fish. I was going to buy a few to cook."
"Let your sister-in-law go. Just tell her what you need."
The mere mention of braised fish made Sun Rou recall Lin Feng's cooking, and she suddenly had a strong craving for it. She stood up to get her coat. "Check the fridge. Tell me what else you need, and I'll buy it."
Zhang Yuxi also stood up. "I'll go with you, Sister-in-law. We can take a walk around the neighborhood."
Lin Feng glanced at the ingredients in the refrigerator. "If you see shrimp, buy some. We could also use some crabs, clams, and mantis shrimp."
Sun Rou slapped her forehead. "Right!"
