"Okay."
Lin Feng didn't hesitate, nimbly catching the chickens. The coop was nearly empty now that all the chickens had been distributed.
The parents took their chickens to the cafeteria to be processed. After more than an hour, the work was done. Even the chicken hearts and livers were saved. The chickens were also chopped up for them, ready to be cooked back at their camps.
The expressions on the parents' faces were of pure agony. Cooking anything is already a challenge for us, and now we have to roast a chicken? Aren't they overestimating our abilities a bit?
No problem. If you don't know how, just search for a tutorial! Some began researching online, while others called their housekeepers for advice.
Meanwhile, Lin Feng had already started. When rinsing the chicken, he made sure to wash away any small bone fragments left from the chopping. This was a crucial step. Some people just blanch the meat and don't bother, but then you end up with lots of tiny, sharp bones, which ruins the texture. Plus, it could be dangerous for children.
"Honey, could you go ask Mr. Li if they have any potatoes here?"
This was a broiler chicken, not a free-range one, so it was perfect for braising.
A short while later, Zhang Yuxi returned. "Mr. Li says yes. There are some potatoes planted near the wax gourds."
Lin Feng thought for a moment. "Honey, can you watch things here? I'm going to go look for them."
The quads were playing, but when they heard Lin Feng was leaving, they scurried after him.
Lin Feng arrived at the wax gourd patch and, after some searching, finally found the potatoes. The yield was small, and the plants were unremarkable. No wonder no one had noticed them before!
Potatoes grow in the soil. Lin Feng gave a firm pull and uprooted a potato plant. The potatoes attached were very small, likely due to the soil and water conditions. He pulled up two plants, and he and the children picked off the potatoes to take back with them.
When the other parents saw this, they rushed over to ask where the potatoes had come from.
"Over by the wax gourds, there are some tucked away on the inner side."
The other parents scrambled to the spot, afraid all the potatoes would be gone if they were too late.
Zhang Yuxi took the quads to wash the potatoes while Lin Feng simmered the fish soup and braised the chicken pieces.
"Thank you for your hard work, honey and kids," he said.
A passing parent: !!!
Zhang Yuxi felt a bit embarrassed. "It was nothing! You're the one doing all the hard work, dear!"
Besides playing with the children and occasionally lending a hand, I haven't really done anything. And the way those other mothers are looking at me... it's pure envy. It made her feel both awkward and a little guilty.
Lin Feng steamed the rice, finished the potato and chicken braise, made the fish soup, and stir-fried the wax gourd. While everyone else was still busy, his family had already started eating.
Tian Tian, who was closest with their family, was starving and staring over at them with wide, pitiful eyes.
Lin Feng served her a bowl of rice. "Come on, eat with us."
The other children could only watch with longing. Some were on the verge of tears. "Mom, are you done yet?"
"Almost! Just wait a little longer!"
The families were paired up, making about fourteen groups in total. Since it was mostly mothers cooking, Lin Feng couldn't just step in to help the hungry children. He had to avoid giving the wrong impression. Besides, Mr. Li would surely figure something out.
After the meal, Zhang Yuxi went to wash the dishes, and Lin Feng took the children to look for fruit. After checking with Mr. Li, he learned there might be watermelons about a twenty-minute walk away, though it wasn't a guarantee. Lin Feng had wanted to get grapes, but unfortunately, the ones they found were a bit sour, and the kids didn't like them.
As soon as he heard there might be watermelons, Lin Feng set off with the quads. Even if they didn't find any, a post-meal walk to aid digestion was a good idea.
After hiking for about twenty minutes, they still hadn't seen anything. Lin Feng decided to press on a bit further, and sure enough, they came upon a watermelon field.
However, there was a sign that read, "NO STEALING. YOU ARE ON CAMERA. VIOLATORS WILL BE FINED 1,000 YUAN."
This also confirmed there were indeed watermelons here.
Looking around, he spotted a small shed with someone guarding it. Lin Feng led the children over. An old gentleman was cooling himself with both a palm-leaf fan in his hand and an electric fan.
He looked the man up and down and asked gruffly, "Who are you? What do you want?"
Lin Feng said, "Hello, sir. It's so hot out, we were just hoping to buy a watermelon to quench our thirst. How much are they?"
The old man's gaze fell on the four children. "2.50 yuan per jin. Go ahead and pick one out."
Lin Feng was delighted. "Thank you, sir! Thank you!"
The quads also politely thanked the old man. The man, who had been stern-faced just a moment ago, now wore a kind and friendly expression.
"What are you all doing out here?"
One of the quads answered, "Our teacher brought us here for an activity."
"Oh? What kind of activity?"
Second Child said with a smile, "We're staying in tents, and our dad has to cook. My dad's amazing! He can fish, climb trees, he can do anything! He's just like Superman."
"Wow, your dad is that amazing, huh?"
While the quads chatted with the old man, Lin Feng went to choose a watermelon.
The old man didn't even bother to weigh it. With a grand wave of his hand, he said, "Forget it. It's just one watermelon, not worth much. It's a gift!"
Lin Feng was taken by surprise. The old man's eyes were fixed on the four children.
"This is my treat for these adorable little ones!"
Lin Feng didn't refuse the man's kindness. "Quads, say thank you to Grandpa."
"Thank you, Grandpa!"
The old man was overjoyed. "You're very welcome!" he told them. Then he advised Lin Feng, "Eating a warm watermelon can give you an upset stomach. When you get back, let it sit for a bit and soak it in some cold water."
"Okay!"
The children waved enthusiastically, bidding the old man goodbye.
On the way back, the four children held hands, singing songs like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and "Little White Rabbit." Lin Feng followed behind them, carrying the watermelon with a smile on his face.
After walking for a while, they saw Zhang Yuxi and Liu Qing standing by the side of the road. Tian Tian was squatting on the ground, engrossed in something.
Second Child shouted at the top of his lungs, "Tian Tian!!"
Everyone looked up. Tian Tian dropped the small stick in her hand and came running over, PITTER-PATTER.
"Hey, Uncle, where did you get that watermelon?"
Second Child grinned. "We walked a really long way and saw lots and lots of watermelons."
"We were going to buy one, but the nice grandpa gave it to us for free."
"That grandpa was so nice!"
Tian Tian took Second Child's hand, then Third Child's. "I'll show you something cool! There are tons and tons of ants over here!"
"Ants? Where?"
The quads were instantly captivated by the ants.
Lin Feng said, "I'll go ahead and get the watermelon soaking!"
As soon as he returned to the camp, all the mothers' eyes were glued to his watermelon. After Lin Feng explained where he got it, a few of the mothers set off to buy their own.
About twenty minutes later, Lin Feng sent Zhang Yuxi a message telling her to bring the kids back for watermelon. After eating the watermelon, it was time for a nap!
Lin Feng had picked a large one. He cut it up for his own children and sent a portion over to Liu Qing's group. The remaining watermelons were left for the quads to handle. They could keep them for themselves or share them with their good friends from class.
It was obvious that First Child, Second Child, and Fourth Child had many friends. Third Child had fewer.
This was all within Lin Feng's expectations. Of course I know what my own children's personalities are like.
After finishing the watermelon, he took the children for their afternoon nap.
