The next day, Mr. Li announced it was their last day. After breakfast, everyone packed up their tents to go home. Zhang Yuxi's job was to look after the children while Lin Feng handled packing up their belongings and the tents.
Breakfast was in the cafeteria. Afterward, they boarded the school-arranged bus to head back. Along the way, the bus would stop near any student's home, allowing the parents and children to get off. This time, both the parents and children had a wonderful time and hoped for another such experience in the future.
「They got home around ten o'clock.」
With vegetables and meat in the fridge, Lin Feng swiftly began to prepare lunch. Zhang Yuxi flopped onto the sofa, feeling drowsy while the children played. The cool air from the air conditioner made her even sleepier.
"Lunch is ready!" Lin Feng called out.
After lunch, Lin Feng sent the children to their room for a nap and lay down with Zhang Yuxi for a rest.
That day, someone in their residential community organized a donation drive. Residents could donate items they no longer used, and the source of the donations and the details of their distribution would be made public. When Lin Feng's family heard about it, they decided to participate.
"Little ones, take a look and see if you have any toys you don't play with anymore, or books you've already read. Bring them to Mommy and Daddy!"
Lin Feng and Zhang Yuxi then started sorting through their own belongings. They were busy all afternoon packing up the adults' items. Lin Feng sorted through a series of things from his school days, like old clothes and bags, as well as household items that were no longer needed but still in good condition.
They had previously set aside the children's old clothes from when they were newborns up until their first birthday. However, An Lan's mother had already taken them all. She said that young babies grow well and are easier to care for when they wear hand-me-downs. That's why she had taken everything that the first-born and fourth-born children had used, leaving only the belongings of the second and third. So this time, Lin Feng sorted out all the clothes the remaining two had worn before they turned three to be donated. Zhang Yuxi sorted out her old maternity clothes and other items she rarely wore.
When they got to the living room, they saw that the children weren't sorting at all—they were just playing.
Lin Feng asked, "Didn't I ask you to sort out the toys you don't play with and the storybooks you don't read?"
The children then realized they had been so absorbed in playing that they hadn't done their task yet.
While Zhang Yuxi packed up the items she had sorted, Lin Feng took the lead in helping the children sort through their things. Children are fickle, always wanting something new. Some toys would get lost in the middle of play. For others, the children simply lost interest, leading to a constant cycle of buying new things and tiring of the old. Lin Feng disinfected these toys periodically, so they still looked new and very clean.
Lin Feng held up a toy basket. "Put the toys you don't play with in here! Only the good ones, not the broken ones."
Rattles and hand-bells were definitely things they'd outgrown. The children reluctantly put some of their older, outdated toys into the basket as well. In less than half an hour, the toys were mostly sorted, and their mountain-like pile had been cut in half.
Lin Feng then told them to sort their books. Meanwhile, he inspected the broken toys to see if they could be repaired. Some just had loose screws that needed tightening. Others had detached limbs that could be reattached. For any with torn clothing, Lin Feng simply mended them with a needle and thread.
Zhang Yuxi came downstairs and started helping him sort through the items. They had initially planned to save these toys for Guo Guo. But Guo Guo probably isn't short on toys anyway.
After packing the toys into a box, Lin Feng turned to find the children had already started reading. He and Zhang Yuxi exchanged a smile.
Lin Feng walked over and set a basket down. "Come on, put the books you don't read in here!"
The books they no longer read were mostly picture books with only a few pages and a few words, as well as books for learning basic concepts like objects and colors.
Once everything was tidied up, it was almost time for dinner. Lin Feng carried several boxes out to the security station to register the donation. There was already someone else there doing the same. Although they lived in the same community, Lin Feng didn't actually know any of his neighbors. He only recognized a few familiar faces from taking his son or their dog, Dabai, out for walks.
The man greeted Lin Feng with a nod, glancing at the large and small boxes. "That's quite a lot of stuff you've got there," he said with a smile.
Lin Feng chuckled. "Most of it is the kids' clothes and toys."
The man nodded. "I just have a few articles of clothing and things."
Someone handing out flyers just outside the community gates overheard the conversation and immediately perked up. He hurried over to Lin Feng. "Hey there, how old are your kids?" he asked. "How about joining our balance bike race? It's open to children aged two to six!"
Lin Feng wasn't in a rush to push early education on his children. He believed children should be allowed to have a proper childhood. For example, after seeing photos of the quadruplets, dubbed the "Four Treasures," on an e-commerce app, some people had contacted Liu Bo about managing them for a potential career in the entertainment industry. Liu Bo relayed Lin Feng's refusal. Nevertheless, some people had already made the "Four Treasures" into popular emoji packs; their cute faces were unmistakable among the memes of adorable children. Lin Feng ignored all this, along with the push from various institutions for premature education.
However, Lin Feng did make a point of letting his children try a wide variety of activities, such as swimming, outdoor sports, spending time in nature, and learning about different agricultural crops. Many children were learning to ride balance bikes these days. He'd seen videos of it but had never given it much thought.
An idea suddenly struck him. "My kids don't know how to do this yet," he said.
Seeing Lin Feng's interest, the promoter quickly entered the community to discuss it further—something he wasn't normally allowed to do.
The promoter smiled. "May I ask how old your little ones are?"
"Three years old."
"A children's balance bike, also called a glide bike, originated in Germany and is a very popular toy vehicle now," the promoter explained. "It's suitable for children from two to six years old. This bike is like a regular bicycle but without the pedals and chain. Children use their legs to push off the ground and glide forward. It helps develop their motor skills, coordination, and sense of balance."
Lin Feng listened patiently.
"The competition is in one week," the promoter continued. "One week isn't a long time, but we can offer a week of lessons to get them started, and then they can experience the race. The results aren't important; the main thing is for the kids to get some exercise and have fun."
Lin Feng looked at the flyer. It read: "100-Baby Balance Bike Challenge." The flyer listed the event time as one week from now and the participants as children aged two to five. The host organization was a balance bike club that Lin Feng had never heard of.
The flyer contained a lot of details, which Lin Feng quickly scanned. It roughly stated the following:
All participants would receive a free entry pack valued at 200 yuan. Before the race, all contestants must listen for the official announcements, report to the check-in area on time, and draw a lane number for their preliminary heat. Contestants must arrive and sign in at the race site ten minutes before their heat begins. Anyone who fails to appear at their lane after being called three times will be considered to have forfeited.
Each age group would have preliminary heats, semifinals, and a final. The top eight finishers from the preliminary heats would advance to the semifinals. The top five from the semifinals would then advance to the final to compete for first, second, and third place. After finishing their race, children should be taken to the rest area by their parents to prepare for subsequent races. They should not linger on the racetrack or wander off, to avoid missing their next event. The award ceremony will be held after all competitions have concluded.
As for the awards, in each age group, the top eight finishers would receive a trophy. The top three would also receive gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively. All contestants would receive a participation trophy.
