「The next day.」
After dropping the kids off at school, Zhang Yuxi went and bought copybooks—one for each of Da Bao, Er Bao, and Si Bao.
Her handwriting and Lin Feng's were both quite attractive. This was especially true for her; she excelled at both brush and pen calligraphy and had won numerous awards. Zhang Yuxi couldn't stand that her own children's handwriting was so atrocious even their teachers couldn't read it. She had bought first-grade copybooks synchronized with their language textbook, for them to practice their characters.
Zhang Yuxi expressionlessly handed the copybooks to Lin Feng.
"After they finish their homework, check it. If their handwriting is too messy, make them erase it and rewrite it. I'll be checking when I get back. Also, they each need to complete one page from their copybooks. I'll review that when I return!"
Lin Feng nodded. "Okay!"
At noon, when the kids came home and learned of the new rule, the three little Huskies' faces fell, their expressions utterly dejected.
Lin Feng could only say, "If you just concentrate on each stroke next time you write, then there won't be a problem, right?"
The three Huskies fell silent in unison.
Da Bao was on the verge of tears. He was genuinely trying to write well, but he just couldn't manage it! It was different for Er Bao and Si Bao—they hadn't even bothered to try. How frustrating was that?
When they got home from school, Lin Feng sent the children upstairs to do their homework, telling them he would call them when dinner was ready. He gave the three Huskies a specific warning, "Write neatly. Don't make your mother angry!"
Less than five minutes later, Zhang Yuxi returned. "Are the children upstairs doing their homework?"
"Yeah. Why are you back so early today?"
Zhang Yuxi huffed. "To supervise them, I've rescheduled all my afternoon classes. From now on, I'll probably be back around this time every evening."
With that, she went upstairs. A moment later, she brought the three Huskies down to the living room to do their writing.
"You all will write while Mom watches," she declared, pausing before adding, "If you write an ugly character, you are to erase it and rewrite it on your own!"
Lin Feng heard the three children's listless reply.
"Yes..."
While preparing her lesson plans, Zhang Yuxi occasionally glanced over at the three boys.
"Don't bury your heads so low! Sit up straight!" she reminded them. "Si Bao, did you skip lunch today? It looks like you have no strength to write."
There was no issue with the children's grades, only their penmanship.
"Si Bao, your stroke order for the character 'mountain' is wrong. This exact question was on your last test, and you got it wrong then, too. How are you still making the same mistake?"
Si Bao pursed his lips. "Then how am I supposed to write it?"
Zhang Yuxi shot back, "You're asking me? Look it up in your textbook! Don't you have one?"
Just as Si Bao was about to look it up, Er Bao wrote out the correct stroke order for him on the side.
Zhang Yuxi asked coolly, "Er Bao, who told you to show him? How will he ever learn his lesson if he doesn't look it up himself?"
Er Bao ducked his head and kept writing.
After San Bao finished his homework, he still had piano practice and other things to do. He usually didn't come downstairs until it was time to eat.
Lin Feng finished cooking. "Dinner's ready!"
In the past, the three Huskies would have come scampering down the stairs at the first call. Now, however, under their mother's intimidating watch, they didn't dare move an inch.
"I'll check your work first," Zhang Yuxi declared. Hmm, their handwriting is much better this time. A huge improvement over before.
"See? You're all perfectly capable of writing well, so why do you insist on being so sloppy? Do you really need someone watching over you to do things properly?"
The three Huskies were scared into silence, though a look of relief washed over their faces.
Even though the children had improved, Zhang Yuxi's brow remained furrowed. "I will continue to supervise you tomorrow! After dinner, each of you will write one page from your copybooks. Now, clean up the table and go eat."
The trio scrambled away as if they had just been granted a pardon.
Watching from the side, Lin Feng had to suppress a laugh. He felt sympathy for the three Huskies, but the situation was just too amusing.
Zhang Yuxi heaved a long sigh and went to wash her hands for dinner.
Er Bao tiptoed over to Lin Feng and whispered, "Daddy, Mommy is so scary!"
Lin Feng stifled a laugh. "What's so scary about her? Your handwriting is what's scary, okay? It's so bad that even your teacher can't read it. She had no choice but to talk to us parents! She tried talking to you, but you wouldn't listen, so what else could she do?"
Da Bao lagged behind, looking sullen. Ugh, this is so draining. I focused so hard on every single stroke today that I didn't even finish all my homework.
The carefree and oblivious Si Bao trotted over happily. "Daddy, what are we having for dinner tonight?"
Lin Feng was speechless.
After dinner, the Huskies went to work on their copybooks while San Bao began his piano practice.
Since Zhang Yuxi didn't need to supervise the copybook practice, she joined Lin Feng in the kitchen to chat.
She pouted playfully. "Am I really that scary?"
Lin Feng laughed. "Of course not, my darling wife is the cutest!"
Zhang Yuxi glanced over and saw the three children chatting as they wrote.
"No talking! Focus on your writing!"
The room fell silent.
For three consecutive days, the three Huskies' penmanship improved by leaps and bounds. This was especially true for Si Bao; his teacher could now recognize his characters without having to decipher them piece by piece. Awesome!
Both Er Bao and Da Bao were the type who could write very well if they just applied themselves. Well, actually, that was just Er Bao.
Da Bao's handwriting had only improved a tiny bit. Si Bao had already surpassed him!
Da Bao went to Lin Feng to air his grievances. "Daddy, why is my handwriting so ugly? I'm trying really, really hard to write well!"
Lin Feng lovingly picked him up, letting out a soft grunt. Wow, Da Bao is a big boy, alright. For a moment there, I completely forgot he's already six!
"Mommy and Daddy both know that," he said gently. "It's okay. As long as you're writing seriously and trying your best, that's all that matters! When Daddy was your age, my handwriting was pretty bad too. It only got better after a lot of practice. And look, Mommy knows you've been trying hard, that's why she hasn't said anything more about it, right?"
"But I'm the class monitor," Da Bao said glumly. "I want my writing to be beautiful!"
Lin Feng paused for a moment before smiling. "That's okay. You don't have to have perfect handwriting to be the class monitor. Your teacher chose you because she recognizes your abilities! She said that our Da Bao is responsible, helpful, and has many other wonderful qualities!"
Da Bao hugged Lin Feng. "Daddy, will you always love me?"
Lin Feng answered the question with the utmost seriousness. "Of course. Daddy will always love you." He emphasized, "Da Bao, no matter what kind of boy you become, Daddy will always love you."
Da Bao grinned. "And Da Bao will always love Daddy!"
Lin Feng kissed his cheek and gave him a playful bounce. Wow, I won't be able to carry Da Bao for much longer! He's turning into a little man!
That evening, Lin Feng mentioned the matter to Zhang Yuxi. "Honey, do you think we've been neglecting Da Bao?"
Zhang Yuxi thought for a moment. "I don't think so. We try our best to treat each child equally. The attention and care we give Da Bao haven't been any less than the others..."
Lin Feng frowned. "I'll have a proper talk with Da Bao one of these days. Maybe he's feeling pressured about being the class monitor, or maybe there's some other reason."
Zhang Yuxi nodded. "Okay, you should talk to him. Since you're both boys, it might be easier for you to communicate."
"Okay."
