After playing for a while, the babies were all tired. Except for Da Bao, who was still playing with the chubby cat, the other three were already fast asleep on the couch. At last, Da Bao also drifted into a deep sleep, clutching the purring cat.
It was only then that the couple emerged from behind the curtains, their hearts instantly warming at the sight.
"This kitty has such a good temperament!" Zhang Yuxi couldn't help but exclaim. "It lets the babies take turns 'bullying' it without getting angry, and it even lulls them to sleep."
"The doctor said it's very healthy with no infectious diseases, and I've already given it two vaccinations," Lin Feng said. "Honey, what if we keep it?"
Zhang Yuxi nodded. "Okay. But from now on, you'll have your hands full, dear, taking care of the babies and a cat."
"It's no bother at all!" Lin Feng was incredibly grateful to have found such a sensible cat. Otherwise, he truly didn't know what he would have done.
「That evening」
When An Lan returned home, she heard meowing inside the house.
"Wow... you guys got a cat? Where is it?"
An Lan looked around and soon spied a yellow ball of fur crouched under the couch, meowing at the babies.
"What an adorable fat cat!"
An Lan walked over, wanting to pick it up, but the cat deftly dodged her, jumping to the other side of the couch. Feeling a bit disappointed, An Lan turned and picked up Da Bao instead, inhaling his milky scent.
In response, the cat arched its back and hissed at An Lan, looking as if it were about to lunge and bite her. Startled, An Lan quickly put Da Bao back down. The cat immediately became docile again.
After a moment of silence, An Lan tried to pick up Er Bao, but the cat instantly arched its back once more.
"Good grief... this cat has to be a spirit!"
An Lan's slippers slapped against the floor as she dashed to the kitchen to tell Lin Feng what had happened. Lin Feng came out to have a look. Sure enough, the chubby cat seemed intent on protecting the four babies.
An Lan exclaimed in surprise, "Director Lin, your luck is just too good! You picked up a stray cat, and it even helps you take care of the babies?"
Lin Feng also found it strange. "Maybe it's because you don't have our family's scent on you," he suggested. "That's why the cat thinks you're a threat."
To test Lin Feng's theory, An Lan decided to conduct an experiment. She went and washed her hands with the baby body wash. When she came out, she saw Zhang Yuxi sitting on the sofa, playing with the babies and petting the cat. The cat was very cooperative, letting out a soft purr.
An Lan tiptoed over and slipped on Zhang Yuxi's discarded jacket. Now I should smell familiar to the cat, she thought.
She sat down on the sofa, and the purring cat instantly became alert. Zhang Yuxi looked at An Lan in surprise.
An Lan tried to pet the cat, but it immediately arched its back. She backed off and tried to play with the babies instead, but the cat looked as if it were about to bite her. After several attempts, An Lan completely gave up. She stood up from the sofa, her chest heaving in frustration as she glared fiercely at the cat.
Zhang Yuxi had also noticed the cat's protectiveness. "You're a grown woman," she said, smiling to console An Lan. "There's no need to argue with a cat."
"It can't tell friend from foe!" An Lan stomped her foot in frustration.
Zhang Yuxi shook her head helplessly and patted the fat cat's head. "Little kitty, that's Auntie An. She might seem a bit fierce, but she's a good person! Don't be so mean to her, okay?"
The cat simply licked its lips, ignoring Zhang Yuxi and continuing to squat beside the babies, its eyes fixed warily on An Lan.
An Lan sighed. She wasn't a child, so she decided not to press the issue with the fat cat. She turned and walked toward the kitchen.
"Director Lin, the chef is coming tomorrow. You can teach him then."
"Okay."
Zhang Yuxi smiled. "Perfect! I have the day off tomorrow, so I can enjoy a big meal."
"Haha, that's exactly what I was thinking!" An Lan said, practically drooling.
Lin Feng not only made food for the babies but also cooked some chicken breast for the cat.
"Sigh... The burdens on Director Lin's shoulders have gotten heavier again!" An Lan teased.
Lin Feng put the chicken breast into the cat's food bowl. Then he picked up a bowl of egg purée, ready to feed the babies. But Da Bao, who usually loved his food, was being exceptionally uncooperative today. He even knocked over his food bowl, clearly throwing a tantrum.
Lin Feng held him and checked him over carefully. "Honey, come take a look at this!"
"What's wrong, dear?" Zhang Yuxi's heart skipped a beat as she rushed over. "Is Da Bao okay?"
Seeing the commotion, An Lan also walked over, concerned.
They saw two tiny white specks, like grains of rice, inside Da Bao's mouth. Lin Feng pointed at them and asked, "Da Bao, are these sores, or are your teeth coming in?"
Zhang Yuxi's eyes widened as she peered into her son's mouth. She said with certainty, "Dear, those are teeth."
An Lan leaned in, enjoying the spectacle. "Let me see! What do baby teeth look like?" she said, then laughed. "Those are obviously milk teeth. How could they be sores?"
Zhang Yuxi soothed Da Bao, "Oh, my poor baby is teething! Does it hurt? Let Mommy hold you."
Lin Feng picked up Er Bao. "Let's see if Er Bao has any."
Er Bao's were just barely starting to emerge, so small you couldn't see them without looking very closely. San Bao had been eating solid foods for a while and didn't drool much anymore. Since she rarely smiled, Lin Feng hadn't even noticed she was teething. In fact, her teeth were coming in even faster than Da Bao's. As for Si Bao... her gums were still completely bare.
The babies were six months old, so it was perfectly normal for them to be teething. After all, some infants start as early as four months.
「That night」
Da Bao was whimpering, clearly uncomfortable from his new teeth. The cat came to the side of the crib, carefully snuggling up next to him and purring softly. Da Bao immediately pulled the cat into his arms and hugged it tight. The cat didn't struggle, just continued to purr. Listening to the cat's purrs, Da Bao finally calmed down and fell asleep.
Lin Feng witnessed this tender scene.
"You're just like the babies, a little angel," Lin Feng praised the cat softly. "Thank you for helping me take care of them. You don't have a name yet, do you? How about we call you Fatty?"
Lin Feng admitted to himself that he was terrible at naming things.
To make sure the cat could eat on the second floor, Lin Feng brought an extra food bowl upstairs. For now, he placed its litter box in the bathroom. After getting everything organized, he finally returned to the bedroom.
Fatty hopped out of the crib and settled down to sleep on the floor. Worried it might get cold, Lin Feng brought its little bed upstairs and placed Fatty inside.
Lin Feng stroked its little head. "Goodnight."
"MEOW..." Fatty responded.
