Catching Ghosts as Head of Yin Department

Chapter 241: A Terrifying Family

But the Xu Family didn't hold a wedding banquet at all.

They just pasted a few wedding character stickers at the door.

It doesn't resemble a proper wedding celebration at all.

Mo Lin slowly stepped forward.

The bald old man, wearing a white short-sleeved shirt, saw Mo Lin approaching, stopped, and yelled at him:

"What are you doing?"

His face was filled with hostility, looking at Mo Lin as if he saw a mortal enemy.

"I want to go in and have a look." Since Mo Lin took on the task, he had to see it through to the end.

Leaving halfway through is out of the question?

He absolutely couldn't do that.

"No way." The bald old man refused without a second thought.

Saying this, he forcibly grabbed Xu Xian's hand and dragged her into the house.

A sharp look appeared in the depths of Mo Lin's eyes, lifting his palm, a black flame appeared in his hand.

"I'll say it again, I want to go in."

Mo Lin's tone intensified.

The bald old man's expression showed clear panic, helplessly said, "Alright, come in then."

He was intimidated by Mo Lin's methods, and thus reluctantly let Mo Lin enter the house.

Mo Lin followed him inside.

The interior was completely different from the outside.

There wasn't the slightest festive atmosphere.

At least there were red lanterns hanging outside, but in the courtyard, there was no trace of red at all.

Not a single decoration.

This scene seemed completely incompatible with Xu Xian in her bright red wedding dress.

Directly ahead was a cement ground, and in the courtyard, there was a wooden table placed.

Seated in front were two women and a man.

One woman looked quite old, presumably Xu Xian's mother.

The other man, either Xu Xian's brother or her younger brother.

As for the other woman, either a sister-in-law or a sister-in-law.

Mo Lin quickly guessed the identity of this family.

There were simple dishes on the table.

When Xu Qiang saw Xu Xian ran out again, he shouted angrily, "Useless girl, making trouble every day."

As he finished speaking, Xu Qiang casually picked up a chair at his feet, intending to smash it at Xu Xian.

Just as he raised his hand, the woman beside him tugged at his sleeve as a reminder.

Xu Qiang glanced at Mo Lin and reluctantly put the chair down.

Xu Xian instinctively kept her head down, not protesting, as if she was already used to it.

"Dad, don't mind this useless girl, let's eat." Xu Qiang gestured for the old man to eat.

The old man locked the door from inside the house and then went to eat.

Mo Lin saw clearly, there were only four bowls on the table.

Xu Qiang's family was sitting together eating.

Xu Xian seemed like an outsider.

While eating, the old man tenderly offered his son some meat from time to time.

"You useless girl, what are you looking at? Get back to your room." The old man was annoyed by Xu Xian staring, yelling at her.

So Xu Xian led Mo Lin back to her place.

Calling it a place, it was actually just a makeshift room hastily built on the far left of the courtyard.

Inside, there was an improvised bed made of planks, covered with straw.

If he hadn't seen it with his own eyes, Mo Lin found it hard to imagine anyone still sleeping like this in this day and age.

"Who was that young man just now?" Mo Lin asked Xu Xian.

"That's my brother."

This statement surprised Mo Lin a bit.

A brother having such an attitude towards his sister.

What kind of environment did this come from, to foster such behavior?

"Master, have you eaten?"

Xu Xian opened the drawer in front, taking out two hard-looking cakes.

"I have eaten," Mo Lin politely declined.

Xu Xian awkwardly smiled, "Since I can remember, they haven't let me eat at the same table as them.

If I eat more, they say I ate too much and don't let me eat."

This situation implied that Xu Xian had no money.

No money, then how did she get the Celestial Sect involved?

Mo Lin was very curious.

There are ghost-catching matters every day, everywhere; surely, you'd need to pay to get the Celestial Sect involved. Without payment, why would the Celestial Sect care about such trivial matters?

"What did you give the Celestial Sect?" Mo Lin asked Xu Xian.

"Nothing, I didn't give anything," Xu Xian bitterly smiled, "I have absolutely nothing of value."

"A few days ago, someone passed by and said they could get the Celestial Sect to help rescue me. I thought they were just joking.

Unexpectedly, the Celestial Sect actually sent someone."

Is there really someone this kind?

Mo Lin shook his head, deciding to focus on solving the immediate issue first.

"What's with the wedding dress you're wearing?" Mo Lin asked Xu Xian.

"A few days ago, my brother invited a Little Ghost home, not sure from whom he heard that the ghost could bring wealth.

So they discussed marrying me off to the ghost."

Xu Xian appeared visibly panicked when revealing this.

"Please, take me away from here, I beg you." Xu Xian suddenly became emotional, kneeling before Mo Lin.

Mo Lin was her only lifeline.

"Bang!"

The door was suddenly kicked open by someone.

Xu Qiang held a kitchen knife in his right hand, while Xu Xian's father clutched a wooden stick.

The two women each wielded different objects.

"Marrying the ghost is to change our luck, and you want to escape? Are you even human?" Xu Qiang yelled at Xu Xian.

"You ungrateful wretch, we've raised you for decades, don't you feel any gratitude?"

Xu Xian's mother also scolded her, "I've worked so hard to raise you, is this how you repay me?"

"Thud!"

Xu Xian's mother directly sat on the ground, wailing with a tearful voice.

Waving her hands and slapping the ground, she cried, "I'm so unlucky! Are you trying to push me to my death?

Everyone else's daughters are obedient and well-behaved, why is mine so disobedient?"

"Oh, heavens! Why is my life so miserable!"

"Xu Xian, do you have any regard for your mother? Are you trying to kill her by breaking her heart?" the bald old man chastised Xu Xian.

"I'm not..."

Xu Xian cried miserably, "I don't want to marry a ghost.."

"Okay, as long as you don't leave this family, we won't force you to marry the ghost."

The bald old man signaled Xu Qiang to speak.

"We're all family, we definitely won't force you to marry the ghost," Xu Qiang reiterated.

The speed at which this family changed their tune was truly remarkable.

"Alright, then I won't leave this family," Xu Xian consented, relaxing her stance.

Mo Lin had given Xu Xian a glance, sighed inwardly.

Perhaps Xu Xian herself was unaware that marrying a ghost was not as simple as she thought.

This family had obvious issues.

Maybe Xu Xian, living in this environment, had become numb.

"I can take you away," Mo Lin offered Xu Xian kindly.

"Forget it, I won't leave this family after all, since if I leave here, I have nowhere to go," Xu Xian politely declined Mo Lin.

Mo Lin smiled, turned around, and left directly.

Only after experiencing it personally does one understand the meaning of the saying, 'those pitiable must have despicable aspects.'

Xu Xian's actions were utterly contradictory.

Of course... Mo Lin wasn't overly concerned; he wasn't an idle person.
