Catching Ghosts as Head of Yin Department

Chapter 283: Mourning Before the City God Temple

The innkeeper's wife held her child and took a small knife from the familiar drawer in front of her.

Then she used the blade to cut the child's finger.

The child didn't seem to feel any pain, and neither cried nor shouted, just kept his eyes wide open.

The innkeeper's wife held the child's finger and let the scarlet blood drip onto the statue of the Ghost.

The blood was quickly absorbed by the statue.

This method uses the soul of an infant to nourish the Ghost.

Mo Lin shook his head as he watched.

This infant won't live much longer.

Definitely won't live to eighteen.

"Is this your biological child?" Mo Lin asked the innkeeper's wife.

"He is indeed my son." The innkeeper's wife confidently replied to Mo Lin.

Mo Lin smiled regretfully; it was his first time seeing someone sacrifice their own child.

The tiger does not eat its cubs.

But that saying doesn't hold any meaning here.

Mo Lin didn't want to meddle.

Perhaps seeing through Mo Lin's thoughts, the innkeeper's wife pointed at Mo Lin's face with her finger and warned him.

"I warn you, don't meddle."

Perhaps she thought one warning wasn't enough,

the innkeeper's wife pointed outside, at a thin man in the corner, and spoke to Mo Lin.

"Their family ended up like this because they meddled. If you don't want to end up like them, don't meddle."

Mo Lin followed the innkeeper's wife's direction and saw a man curled up in the corner with a sallow complexion.

The man seemed to be about the same age as Mo Lin.

Mo Lin intended to learn more about the situation here.

This sallow-complexioned man was a good entry point.

Mo Lin left the inn and walked straight to the man with his head buried in his chest in the corner.

"Brother..." Mo Lin called to the man.

The man looked up, his eyes vacant, "Foreigner? Daoist Cultivator? Red Dust Immortal."

The man's eyes were sharp; just one look and he identified Mo Lin's identity.

"Leave quickly, these people deserve no sympathy; they've brought their fate upon themselves.

They deserve it..." the man shouted to Mo Lin.

"Brother, calm down." Mo Lin reassured the man's emotions.

"Don't bring him inside. Our inn doesn't welcome him." The innkeeper's wife warned Mo Lin.

Mo Lin walked back into the inn and brought out the untouched plate of fried chicken, handing it to the sallow-complexioned man.

"Eat."

The sallow-complexioned man took the chicken without hesitation and ate heartily.

He had been starving.

After finishing the meal, the man introduced himself to Mo Lin.

"My name is Hua Star; I used to be a Daoist Cultivator, but now all my Dao Practice is gone." Hua Star said to Mo Lin slowly.

"How did you end up like this?" Mo Lin asked Hua Star.

"My grandfather was a Daoist Cultivator, very kind-hearted. He heard there was a ghost here and came to exorcise it.

My grandfather realized every household here was raising ghosts, and those ghosts were devouring their lifespans.

Everyone here will be sacrificed on the sixteenth of July.

My grandfather warned them not to raise ghosts and to leave quickly.

Instead of appreciating my grandfather's advice, they plotted to kill him, and even stripped me of my Dao Practice."

That's why earlier Hua Star said these people deserved their fate when he saw Mo Lin.

"Everyone here dies on the sixteenth of July? Why?"

Mo Lin knew there was no good ending for those who raise ghosts, but everyone dying on the sixteenth of July?

Is there some explanation for this?

"On the sixteenth of July, to kill Lady City God, they need the blood of these people.

Sacrificing their blood, then slashing Lady City God." Hua Star continued to explain to Mo Lin.

"The City God of the Eastern Domain has suppressed this place for hundreds of years, accumulating incense presence here. The Ghost wants to use the blood of all Eastern Domain people to break the City God's incense presence and slash Lady City God."

"My grandfather intended to stop this, but they not only didn't appreciate it, they even killed him."

Indeed, talking to Hua Star was the right move for Mo Lin.

He smoothly learned what he wanted to know.

"A Ghost daring to slash Lady City God? How?" Mo Lin was puzzled.

Even the Ghost King wouldn't be able to slash Lady City God, right?

This was the territory of the Eastern Domain's City God; although he had fallen, his legacy remains.

Lady City God guards this place; at worst, she shouldn't be slain by a Ghost.

Isn't this absurd?

Hua Star pointed westwards and said to Mo Lin: "Walk three kilometers west, and you'll see the City God Temple. Then you'll understand."

"Thank you." Mo Lin considered, then said to Hua Star, "Why don't I help you leave the Eastern Domain?"

Instead of a verbal thanks, Mo Lin wanted to do something for Hua Star.

"No need, I won't live much longer." Saying this, Hua Star lifted his shirt.

A large patch of pitch-black was revealed on his chest.

His soul was already shattered, and now being able to speak with Mo Lin was a sign of his last glow.

Seeing this, Mo Lin immediately understood.

"Sigh..." Mo Lin sighed softly.

"Thank you for telling me these things." Mo Lin thanked Hua Star again, then left.

Mo Lin headed west, to find the City God Temple Hua Star mentioned.

After a few minutes of walking, Mo Lin realized something was amiss.

The air was filled with dark Ghost Qi, along with a hint of golden color.

It should be the faint presence emanating from the City God Temple.

Although the presence was weak, it was enough to protect all residents within a kilometer.

Mo Lin finally saw the City God Temple.

But it was completely different from what Mo Lin expected.

Outside the City God Temple hung white cloth.

The temple's doors were wide open, with red stains on them, as if someone had splashed human blood on them.

And it looked like blood had been splashed frequently, so the smell was very pungent.

Coffins were placed in front of the City God Temple.

Looking around, there were at least hundreds of coffins.

Someone was mourning in front of the City God Temple.

A group of people with white cloth on their heads were mourning outside the temple.

"It's all your fault... all your fault... If it weren't for you here in the Eastern Domain, my son wouldn't have died so young.

Lady City God, you ought to die.

It's all because of you that so many in my family have died."

The voice was sharp.

These people knelt on the ground, wailing, all using curses aimed at Lady City God.

This was breaking fate.

These people mourning represses the presence of the City God Temple.

Logically, the City God Temple here should protect the area.

Although the temple's fortune is destroyed, it still protects all residents within a kilometer.

But, it seems the people here don't appreciate it.

Not only do they not appreciate it, they even blame the deaths of their children on Lady City God.

"Sister, what's going on?" Mo Lin asked a woman.

"Lady City God, she has harmed many people, killing thousands of children; these people have come to hold her accountable," the woman explained to Mo Lin.
